PS5 Pro Pricing Didn’t Have A Negative Effect; Aimed For Hardcore Users, Says Sony President Hiroki Totoki

He is japanese???

Really?

Yeah. So far I like this guy better than Ryan. Maybe part of that is because he's Japanese, I feel like he's less subject to the European/American nonsense. Part of it is probably because of his role as CFO. I know he's going to be a bottom-line guy who isn't going to take foolish risks with something like Concord. He also seems like less of a salesman than Ryan did, more of a straight shooter. At least that's my perception so far.

Yes, I said it... Because I have deep love and respect for the Japanese people.

I have to say I was surprised to find out that not one of the 30-or-so people on my Discord MP channel picked one up due to the price and disc drive issue. I'm not doubting that it's selling fine but yea, I remember half my friends buying a 4 Pro immediately, me included.

Multiple stores near me have sold out or are coming close to selling out. Maybe it's different in Europe, but in the US, it seems to be selling pretty well.

That being said, it's still the #1 selling console in pretty much every country's Amazon page.

My town has a Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and a Gamestop. The Walmart is a Supercenter.

The Best Buy has 1 left in stock, the Walmart has 3 left in stock, the Target is sold out, and the Gamestop is sold out.

Multiple stores in my area are sold out or have 3 or fewer consoles left. This is all in an age where you can order next day delivery on Amazon.

Someone mentioned that they haven't sold out yet, but we have no idea how much they shipped. They could have shipped 500K worldwide or they could have shipped 3 million worldwide... We have no clue and probably won't have a better idea until we start seeing sales reports out of key regions.

So you think he is going to openly lie to investors?
It surely isn't a lie because he prefaced it with 'think', no? Meaning it is an intuition that can't be proved or refuted, currently. Anecdotally I know five people including myself - since before PS1 - that were all the primary target for this device and none of us have bought one and either directly or indirectly the reason for skipping lead back to the value proposition.

Most of them are primary PC gaming, now rocking 4080/4090 class GPUs and always buy all platforms and bought PS4 Pro and X1X refreshes last time, and all felt the device should have had an integrated drive like OG PS5, not a slim add-on situation, and been priced at 700 rather than an effective 800.

So that's 5 of the 5-10m core gamer that opted out by price and I don't know anyone IRL that has bought one, so 100% fail anecdotally on the offer by Totoki that might only be truly felt at the launch of PS6.

Here is the thing... What exactly do they lose by you not buying one?
You already own a PS5, and you are not going to pay more for PS5 games going forward if you had bought a Pro.

There is actually no financial change if you didn't upgrade to a pro. For Sony it is fine. They just had to make sure the hardware is sold at a profit and nothing else is required. Money is tight these days so less people can afford one, and that is just fine and not anyone's fault.

They are losing the cut on all 3rd party games to PC stores like Steam, which was the very reason for mid gen refreshes to begin with for those very such customers.

Hardware demand is also less, and the only solution for them is to make a new sku with a built-in drive, and because they didn't sell it in the FOMO window, they probably need to sell it below 700 at 650, and do it all in a time-frame that is eating itself against, holding out for the PS6, or just waiting for PC ports.

Or they'd have to release a killer game that made play it on Pro essential in the next 6months, but even then the built-in disc drive SKU might still be needed. Drive scalping isn't going to help the situation either.

of course it is for hc users. even the regular one is not truly mass market price anymore. there are probably a ton of people who still expect consoles (with disc) to cost 399, 299 or even less.

We have reached saturation, anyone who would want a console has bought one. So there is no more expansion by cost cutting. So the next logical step is to not sell consoles at a loss.

You might get such discounts again when Amazon show up with a competing console. Until then Sony has no pressure to do anything different.
