Southern California is basically all hispanics. My parents have a place down there and decided to move. I'm glad for that! :)

I took a latino heritage class once. EVERYONE WAS CONFUSED ON WHAT HISPANIC MEANT.

Whats the official word.

I'm prolly wrong, but I always thought:

Hispanic: either from or descended from Spanish speaking countries
Latino: from or descended from Latin America

As defined by you or them?

As defined by the definition of Latino.

Umm... which ones? I went through them pic by pic and they all are.

At a glance, Martin Sheen and Paz de la Huerta. Both of their fathers are from Spain.

Yeah, I dunno about the rest but Martin Sheen's family is from Galicia.

Yup, Paz de la Huerta too. Well, maybe not Galicia, but Spain nonetheless.

Latino is someone who descends from or who's culture is influenced by countries that speak any of the Romance languages.

I'm get confused too, I use them interchangeably but I guess to the previous definition I qualify as both.

Also we taking over!!! McDonalds to officially start selling posole.

You're a not really.

This just makes it confusing all over again. Oh well.

Hispanic is someone whose past descendants are Spanish, which some radical groups like Aztlan/mecha take offense to.

Latino can be used as someone from Latin America or a Latin and Southern European language country or have any descendants from any of those.

"Italians and Spaniards are said to have a Latin temper"

I prefer nationally instead of race (even though Hispanic/Latino are not races) to identify one's culture so meh.

See. thats what I don't get... how does it have so many definitions... whats your take?

The reason there are so many definitions is because there are so many PC terms, official terms, and everyone identifies themselves differently. Hispanic is on official government forms, but you have to check white as well. It used to be that you could check one or the other, but now it's White/Caucasian with a subcategory of "Hispanic." I think this was done so they could separate black Hispanics into a different category.

Latino came about to distinguish between people from Latin America and Europe. In many places they are interchangeable (like here), but basically, that's the difference in the two. There is also a connotation of Latino being "La Raza" or "mestizo" or, basically, of mixed descent. There is also "chicano" which is used in the States to refer to Mexican-Americans. In Mexico, it's used to refer to people born in the States with Mexican parents aka "Pochos."

Hispanic and Latino are the catch-all terms that encompass many others. One term that I dislike, that many people here use, is "Spanish." "Oh, I was talking about the Spanish guy." "Spanish" means "from Spain." It's pretty cut and dry! Don't use it for people from latin america. :P

It can get a bit confusing because different terms are used in different regions, and everyone identifies themselves differently. Some people refuse to call themselves Hispanic because they subscribe to the myth that it was created with the intention to refer to latinos as people who induce panic. -_-

CA media largely uses "Hispanic & Latino communities" Or just Hispanic... Or just latino. Its confusing. I'm having junior college flashbacks again.

Hispanic: deriving from Hispania, also known as the Iberian Peninsula, also known as Spain
Latino: from Latin America, the part of the American continents where Romance (Latin-derived) languages are spoken, mostly Spanish

Basically, Spanish people fucked up the world so badly it's too confusing to explain. I'm Filipino. Technically, that would make me Hispanic (of Spanish extraction), but in practice it doesn't count.

But what if the person is from the island of Hispaniola like myself?

This is the one that bugs me the most. People from Mexico are not Spanish, they're Mexican. Those from Colombia are not Spanish, they're Colombian. From Argentina? Not Spanish, but Argentine/Argentinian. Just because you come from a Spanish speaking country does not make you Spanish. No one ever calls Brazilians Portuguese, Americans English or the Quebecois French. People from Spain are the only Spanish.

Man, I can't wait for all those sweet minority benefits to finally come my way
Ok but first you have to wait until we take over your land refuse to honor land grants, massacre you in the most barbic of forms and in the millions, burn your libraries destory your monuments build over your holy buildings, force you to convert relgions, rape your women and despise the children born from it, have a long standing tradition of racism and segergation I could go on but I'll stop there

well at least its officially confusing. I remember everyone in my class fighting over the issue. Some were self identified hispanic, others latino. I just sat back with my afroamerican hands wrested comfortably on the nape of my neck, enjoying the puppets dance.

I failed the class :\

The Spanish and the French did try to rape the Indian culture out of the Southwest, and burnt what they couldn't pillage or steal. But there are some Indians who try to hold on to their culture instead of running away from it.
