He skipped what I felt the movies biggest flaw which was lack of character development. There was never any real danger of becoming attached to those characters for me.

That Darth Vader line...

"Rouge One" got me. #TeamIRebel, that line is awesome and I don't care what anyone says.

Eh, I thought there was enough there that the film worked on that level, mostly because unlike most of the Star Wars films it sells you on the feeling of being in a desperate war. But as the trailer touched on, faux-Jedi and his gun-toting friend are pretty paper-thin.

I'm apparently in the minority because aside from the convoluted delivery mechanism of the plans and the goofy segue from the end of this film to the next one (the fact that the captain and Leia pull that "diplomatic mission" line when everyone saw them leave the battle) was Imperial Robe Dude. In a world where Peter Cushing wasn't a weird uncanny valley zombie he could have taken Robe Dude's place and we could have cut the dumb Vader segue and the whole "I don't feel like people appreciate my accomplishments" stuff that didn't go anywhere. The film seemed to want to have a less downer ending and decided a bad guy had to die, and so they worked back from that premise.

They kinda covered this w/ the "you probably shouldn't get too attached to any of them" line, and the rundown of each character that just lists the one thing each of them does.

Rouge is one of my peeves. It doesn't help that spellcheck says it's right.

I didn't realize Rogue One was so disliked. Or is this another GAF hates thing that everyone else kind of likes.

Nah, he mentioned it when he brought up the droid.

Man people really turned on Rogue One...

I liked it, even though it had problems

But yeah the one dimensional character description was spot-on

This about the same time frame when people turned on Force Awakens too. It's ok. It's that part of the "internet response to something that's popular" timeline. It even happened with Fury Road, but to a lesser extent.

I thought the movie was okay for what it was, but was surprised at many of the "best Star Wars since Empire!!" comments. Wouldn't be surprised if that's where a lot of the backlash is stemming from.

Pretty good. Certainly better than the TFA one.

Don't get why some people in this thread are kind of acting like they "trashed" the movie though?

Whether you liked the movie or not, that honest trailer wasted my time with the stupid VO gimmick they decided to do for it.
Yeah, that was a disappointing gag.

With Star Wars specifically, there's hyperbole about new entries being "best since Empire." People were even talking it up with Revenge of the Sith, which reviewed quite well at the time.

This is one of the reasons I've skipped all the Rogue One merchandise. I really don't care about these characters and
they'll never be seen again.

"The rebellious rebel who rebels so hard she does whatever her dad tells her."

nodding.
Yeah that quote is pretty poor criticism. Sure they could have spent more time on turning her from selfish prisoner to hero. But even without her dad's push I think she still would have helped the rebellion. You know.. For example, literally being a part of the destruction of an entire city at the hands of the empire, or being a part of a battle where citizens are being indirectly targeted and killed because of imperial occupation of Jedha (she unselfishly saves a girl with whom she shares a similar experience with).

I mean shit it the clip they show in the trailer, her dad says "it must be destroyed" and she replies "I know". Yeah you could say she's just referring to what her dad told her in the hologram message.. But it could also be that moments before, she witnessed exactly the sentiment her father passed along to her. Yes, she's got an emotional connection to her dad that pushes the point home, but had she seen that same message delivered by someone else, I think she still would have wanted to help.. Not because he dad told her so, but because she knows, from first hand experience, that it's the last hope for the galaxy.

It's just a lot more immediately emotional and motivating for her because of it being her father and what happened when she was a child.

In short, her character arc is a result of her father's words, what they mean for the galaxy, and her personal experience in the film exhibited through visual and contextual storytelling.

It's not all that surprising, considering people let hype blind themselves to flaws in media all the time. It's why "stands the test of time" is a phrase; some movies are entertaining but ultimately ephemeral and inconsequential, and I feel like Rogue One, though it breaks new ground for Star Wars, is ultimately going to fall into that hole (because it couldn't break orbit from the usual pitfalls of prequel movies and side stories.)

FWIW - I rank Rogue One behind all three OT movies and Episode 7 but have it above all three of the prequel trilogy movies. It's a fun movie with some really cool moments. Middle of the pack is where it belongs, even if the movie does end on a fantastic note with that Vader sequence.

Same complaints about the same shit. This video stands as a greatest hits of criticisms generated since the movie released. Just like the video about EP7.

Not to say some if this criticism isn't justified of course, but so many valid complaints are easily overshadowed by the shallow and repetitive ones.
