Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

map size doesn't mean anything

Depends on the game. If you want to have a sense of journey, I think a large map can help a lot with immersion, even if parts of the map are more like a backdrop than actually filled to the brim with content.

I thought the road trip vibe of FFXV was significantly hold back due to the rather puny map size and dissapointing locale variation, for example.

Exactly. People act like every piece of writing in the Witcher 3 was amazing and out of the park. It had its bad writing and VA as well.

Point to me an example with as attrocius dialogue. I don't even care about the animation. Just point out one witcher 3 cutscene that has dialogue that is as horrible as what is being discussed. I still hold out hope for this game and hope people like it, but that dialogue was pure garbage.

Yeah it was messy as hell, they kinda cleaned it up after like a year through an update which is much better now

I know people will make a big deal about the lips, writing, voice and there will be other complaints about the game.

To me, I am just surprised a studio like GG has the visual issues at least. Not overly surprised on the other stuff but I thought their past work had decent writing/voice at least.

What changed exactly?

Thank You, these people act like they have never gamed in their life.

Unless the core loop changes dramatically at a mechanical level later on then I can look at everything we've seen so far and somewhat extrapolate from that. I said what I said precisely becaue I have gamed almost my entire life.

I'm not arguing that HZD dialogue was bad but you seriously gonna sit up here and act like everything thing in the Witcher 3 was amazing? Seriously?

In a weird way I sorta dig the PS2 level voice acting and animation in that cutscene on twitter. This game is gonna be the source of some amusement.

Also dang that map looks huge!!! We saw a Preroll youtube ad last night that had some stuff I hadn't seen before. Hard to believe this game is almost here.

EDIT: So wait is that video fake or real? Its the only working link in the thread atm.

Love how the watchers look at night. The lighting is beautiful.

Love that animation of how it tries to get away and still face her, too.

Nah, you just making up shit to justify your bias. You don't know what the game entails, so your extrapolation means nothing.

Yeah great, now the whole thread is about that cutscene (i know it wasn't you Kenzo.)

I hope we get a new one for the actual previews, so that the Thread has at least a chance to be about them as a whole and not only that scene.

I wouldn't call the writing in past Guerilla games decent. Or say that they're particularly well known for character animation moreso known for how much they push graphical fidelity. Which considering the cinematography of Horizon's cutscenes so far from these previews, they're at least consistent?

The voice acting wasn't atrocious, though. This was one of those moments where you wonder if these people have ever heard of second passes. Cuz wooooof. Again, gameplay can trump this, but yeesh.

Absolutely. Not saying the scene was great by any means. Most games, especially open world RPG's, tend to have a handful of these scenes that arent great.

No, but the majority of it was good. Even if the acting was a bit hammy, the content of the conversations and emotions expressed were believeable in the context of what was going on.

The writing in the cutscene everyone is talking about seems like fanfic stuff and the VA seems like people were just given the script without any context as to what was being discussed.

Its hopefully just the breadth and enormity of all the content. When its all bespoke like a Killzone campaign you can make everything custom and perfect. But for what is hopefully an enormous world with dozen/hundreds of interactable characters you get the puppet motions.

Which are kinda dope in a strange way.

Overall I think it is looking very cool. The cutscene in question does have terrible voice acting, the others seem fine for this type of game. No worse than Bioware game's really. In fact some of the conversation with the warrior in the village was pretty well done. I think one of the main problems with the facial animation is the eye tracking. The characters always seem to track each other. It looks good when they are looking straight at the other person, but when they look down their eyes go up and it doesn't look right.

I did find the cutscene in question hilarious though. They really should consider changing whoever did that voice performance haha.

Must shout the really impressive visuals, and the character models in particular. This is the best looking open world game in my opinion. Certainly, the character detail and geometry is more impressive than W3 for instance.
