Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

Yeah, I saw a lot of standard fetch quests. They essentially lead you into particular combat scenarios. There were also some "trials" that asked you to finish certain objectives with a timer. Different rewards for completing at gold, silver, and bronze times. And then there are the Tallnecks, which are themselves side quests. I wrote a sidebar about them. I'm reserving judgement for how side quest variety will ultimately play out, but this is a combat game first and foremost, and the quests convinced me of that.

Thanks for the response. Indeed, the gameplay seems pretty varied and deep so far, and I hope that and the difficulty of the dinobots are what carry the game, along with the beautiful world.

Second question: I may have missed it, but what did you think of the towns/encampments you encountered?

That is good to hear.
Combat is what i really looking forward to more than anything else.

YES. For the most part previews are extremely positive.

This screenshot, too. :o

Interesting to note how there does not seem to be any detail that is smaller than 2x2 pixels in this image. All things that look like they could be pixel sized, slightly larger, or slightly smaller, are blown out to 2x2 pixel points.

what do you think that means in terms of res?

what?

i'm not console warrior-ing, i quoted a person who said that expressing concern about a poor cutscene is "naysaying"

do y'all not remember what happened with no man's sky? blind hype isn't helpful.

fallout 4 got roasted for shitty animations. people roasted me:andromeda for shitty animations. we shouldn't give this a pass.

Fallout 4 Shitty animations did not change how fun the game ended up being.

No man sky lacked a lot of the things people thought it had, animation and cut scenes weren't apart of that.

Mass Effect Andromeda isn't even out yet but again animations regardless of how they look in a cutscene will not take away from. Gameplay..

So all in all, gameplay still matters first than a cut scene or the animation of a cut scene. There's nothing to give a pass to here since none of the games you listed were given bad reviews and players disliked over everything for the things you noted. Just saying...

Point to me an example with as attrocius dialogue. I don't even care about the animation. Just point out one witcher 3 cutscene that has dialogue that is as horrible as what is being discussed. I still hold out hope for this game and hope people like it, but that dialogue was pure garbage.

Movie dialogue writer's in the house. So what dialogue writing credits do you have on your CV?

Man, I'm LOVING what I'm seeing, but the HUD is wayyyyyy too cluttered, and I'm not really a fan of the UI design in general. I hope we have HUD customization options to hide certain elements at least, first thing I want to get rid of is the loot window.

I agree, and nowhere did i ever say that the gameplay was bad or anything of the sort. I quoted someone who said "ignore naysayers, greg says this".

you can (and should) critique things you like and are interested in.

That's cool with me. I hate underwater stuff in games for the most part. Mounting flying creatures isn't a big deal either, would've been cool but it's whatever.

Adding to this, they could always save cool features like this for a sequel if the game warrants one.

I can't help but be a bit disappointed by how Far Cry this looks.
Far Cry is fine...but im just feeling a bit stale on the whole thing

Hopefully the narrative is good. Aloy looks like a fun character

I have not counted edges... but didn't they say this thing would be 2160c? As in checkerboarded 3840X2160?

I am pretty sure that would explain that kind of a pattern showing up, given how many spatial pixels are actually being shaded and how it is extrapolated to the full resolution.

Atleat they do not have the minimap ... it would have been distracting from all the amazing graaaaaphics ...

They did

Reconfirmed 2160c in this video based on conversations with the devs

I think it was 1800c at the Pro reveal so it seems like they managed to improve it.

Holy shit the enemies you override can help you fight, was not expecting that.

Does anybody know if there is a wait system to pass time at will?

Nice!

BTW, it having that behavior on a micro level (nothing smaller than 2x2 pixels) is not exactly a detriment or anything necessarily. Having pixel size details, especially those of high contrast, means you would probably see them pop in and out or flicker with screen movement.

There's something so CG-like about this creature's look, movement, and the lighting here. It's really incredible that we're seeing this not only in real-time but in a huge open world game.

It looks so good. The landscape in the PS4 Pro footage looks as impressive as U4 and this is open world. Guerilla have bridged the gap between linear and open world game visuals.

Ugh. Fuck this stuff in games.

Does anyone ever like open world games that have quests with a timer attached. This is already making me dread what this game is going to turn out to be. Let's hope it has an interesting story and characters.

I feel the same. Will probably wait till the game is £20-25 before picking it up.

15. The in-game map is a 3D, topographical representation

Call up the map and you'll note it's not 2D. You can judge the rise and flow of the world at a glance, and work out potential points of interest that may not be within your sightline.
You can descend into underground ruins and scan old audio transcripts to learn more about the world left behind.
You've the option to delve deeper into the story come character interactions via conversation wheels. But in addition to this there are also narrative-driven flashpoints, offering three different approaches to key situations that'll shape Aloy and her relationships.
Campfires need to be unlocked through discovery, but once you've done so they double up as save points (quick or manual save for alternate save points) and fast travel points. The game will also automatically save during quests.
