I've presently got an A10-6800K Black Edition (with the onboard HD 8670D) with 8gb RAM and a regular ol' 1TB HD. My rig is definitely showing its age (though it's capable enough), and I'm going to have to replace the motherboard when I replace the processor. Very clearly I'm a the end of a few years of upgrades, with the FM2 socket motherboard underpinning everything showing its age very clearly.
I'm toying with the thought of getting one last upgrade, getting a better GPU and then riding the A10 for another year or two.
I might just retire the entire build and start from scratch going forward, formatting it and handing it off to a relative for their own use. I'm not sure if I want to stick with AMD or jump to Intel for my processor. I'm sure I'll decide based on my needs when I do make the jump.
Honestly, I prefer to maintain a decent rig rather than go bleeding edge. I think my upgrade path will be as follows:
I might spend $600 on a basic PC and then do a couple upgrades when starting out, getting a decent mobo and processor with an onboard GPU and seeing how far I can stretch everything. Towards the end of the lifespan of the processor I'll get a dedicated GPU before upgrading.
Upgrade to the best CPU/onboard GPU combo for the socket when it comes out (as it'll probably outclass my dedicated GPU by that point), and then upgrade to another dedicated GPU when the CPU/onboard GPU is showing that age.
I spend to much on games consoles and everything to want to really get into dedicated, hobbyist PC gaming. I'd rather have access to every console than extra pretty PC games.
