To not like some of those tracks is perfectly understandable, but to call them filler is strange

Huge NIN fan and fucking LOVED HTDA. I thought the EP was actually better than anything Trent put out as Nails since Fragile.

So I'm totally excited for this. Dying for it.

The Space in Between, Fur Lined and The Drowning are my favorites from their EP. I'm surprised there were so many people not feeling it. Is it mostly because of his wife being in the band? I wonder how people would feel about HTDA if Reznor wasn't tied to it.

Excited. Definitely interested in seeing live.

We're never getting "old Trent" back. There was an interesting interview on Fresh Air (NPR) about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and his work on the soundtrack, and he talks a bit about his past and how he wrote the music he did at the time. He's recovered, and he's staying that way. Not to mention he is getting older. His voice, which I do like a lot (especially on older material), no longer has the range/ability it had before. This happens to pretty much all performers, I think. They have to tailor their work accordingly.

Though actually, I'm not a big fan at all of Mariqueen's vocals. She's not cookie-cutter but it just doesn't work for me. Don't like her voice all that much.

Her voice is really "clean" and soft sounding to me. I did really like it in HTDA's version of Is Your Love Strong Enough?

Gosh, I just can't agree with you on anything. Fur Lined was probably my favorite out of the 6. Such a kickass beat, very dancy, and Mariqueen's vocals were great on it.

The Space in Between was decent, if it's worth anything.

Though actually, I'm not a big fan at all of Mariqueen's vocals. She's not cookie-cutter but it just doesn't work for me. Don't like her voice all that much. She's not bad but nothing I come back too.

They wouldn't feel anything because they would not have heard of it.

Yep. If Reznor wasn't in it, I probably wouldn't have gave it a spin or learned of it.

The Fragile shits all over everything Trent has done since then. It has tons of variety and really shows off what Trent is capable of. To call it mediocre is just absurd, especially if you like NIN.

I just wish Trent would do something with heavy guitars and get away from all this ambient stuff. I really wish he would work with Charlie Clouser again.

Also the drums sound like shit on Year Zero and The Slip IMO.

I agree completely. Pretty excited for this HTDA EP but I really want Trent return to the heavy guitars, strings and complex layers. The latest NIN tracks sound cleaner more straightforward, particularly the tracks from The Slip. I miss the heaviness and the unconventional dynamics of The Fragile.

TDS is amazing and The Fragile is his best album. With Teeth is also great, I know a lot of people who hate it.

I really feel like his work peaked at The Fragile and then With Teeth was great but not as good and then it just got worse and worse.

Year Zero was pretty good, I kinda like the remix version better. The Slip had some great songs, and I know it was a quick freebie album, but its def his weakest album.

But really, Reznors worst song is still better than 90% of the music out there right now.

Was a little underwhelmed by the first EP to begin with but over time I've come to love a lot of the songs - the only one I don't care for is Parasite. The build and ending of The Space in Between are gold.

I'll agree that musically, the Fragile is great (The Big Come Down being the best), but going back now the lyrics on heaps of the songs make me cringe.

This happens to pretty much all performers, I think. They have to tailor their work accordingly.

Except KISS, who've were an influence to NIN 15 years prior and are still pumping out the same brand of music as their best years (at least in very recent times).
They don't care how old they are (or who's in the band!) as long as they have the makeup to cover it all up, they will keep singing the same!

Looking forward to this. Liked, didn't love first EP.

Hopefully they tour somewhat close to me. Would be awesome to see Trent on stage again.

Yes, he did. I remember reading an interview with Reznor around the time the first EP came out and he mentioned that. Can't seem to find a link now though.

Edit: Found it.
And as far as guest appearances, looks like it might be Peter Christopherson of Coil, who had an early single that How to Destroy Angels named themselves after. Reznor confirmed that they "ran the name choice by him first and we've discussed him contributing to the upcoming material in one form or another."

Obviously this was before Sleazy passed away. To think what might have been....(with this and Coil in general)

unabashedly I love everything this man does...

Same here. Still, I was hoping for some new NIN this year. I thought it was rumored at one point.

I agree with all of this. Even though it took me the longest to get into, I now consider The Fragile to be my favorite album by anyone. The flow (particularly on disc one) is sublime.

It took ten years for something to know New Order's 'Technique' of the top of my list, but this did.

Going to a live show of HTDA would be torture for me, so close but yet so far to actually being in a NIN concert.

Anyway, im looking forward to listen to this new EP, I found the first one to be decent and way better than music being released by other acts now a days.

Couldn't have said it better myself, agree on every point. I'll check out HTDA when I get home.

Glad that Trent is singing atleast half of the track. Mariqueen's vocals, as decent as they are, needs a different vibe and Trent singing adds to it. Let's see what the rest of the EP is made of.

Reminds me of Ghosts 18, my favourite Reznor instrumental. Not sure what I think of it yet, but it's nicely atmospheric.

Lyrics:

I feel the skin that separates us start to fade
And when I lie on top of you, I'm afraid
I can see right through myself, crystal clear
I am disassembling
I could disappear, disappear

There is a voice inside of me, I don't know
And all his words keep echoing a tremolo
I've been waiting for a sign to appear
He has a message waiting for me
But I don't wanna hear
I promise
I swear
I can't

I can't keep it together

Really cool song. Love the atmosphere. It was nice that Trent's voice is a bit more prominent. Can't wait for the album.

while I like the song

the first single off a new project should have been something with more energy
