How will PS2 games look on PS3?

Can we expect improved image quality with the Nvidia GPU and HDMI output(s) or even upscaling to 720p/1080i/1080p using CELL?

And how about load times - is the DVD-ROM reader in PS3 faster than that in PS2?

Nothing seems to have been revealed about PS2 compatibility apart from 'it will be there'.

Aka I don't read every bit of videogame news out there nor am I privy to industry information but thanks for the taking the time to reply :D

Just like PS1 games on PS2, PS3 will take advantage of all that extra processing power to radically improve image quality of PS2 games on PS3!

In other words, just be happy if all your games work.

There was little or no improvement in playing PS1 games on PS2 because there was very little software emulation going on.

Unless they stick bits (hardware wise) of PS2 in PS3, I'm hoping PS2 emulation will all be done in CELL allowing for a more obvious improvement than PS1 games on PS2.

I'm guessing some sort of full-screen AA would be in order and easily doable, especially if we're going to be hooking up this baby to HDTVs.

It'll be there... and speculation is that they'll emulate the GS, while using a minaturized EE in the PS3.

Compatibility might be a bit worse than the PS1 to the PS2, but if it's true, then for the games that do work (should be most), then you'll be able to see reasonable upgrades in image quality. Maybe. It would be totally awesome if they had GT4 running like Vision GT though... (except without the extra cars I guess).

If they're emulating the GS then I'm assuming a lot of the issues PS2 games suffered from (aliasing, shimmering) can be rectified?

Well the hope is not just rectified but improved upon spectacularly...

so if they can change the resolution, sharpen up the textures with AF, add anti aliasing, even add SSAA (which can smooth out the jaggies in alpha channel textures)...

stuff that you'd expect the RSX would be able to do.

But honestly, I'm not expecting much more than straight PS2 compatibility. I'd think there'd be strategic reasons for not beefing up PS2 capabilites so much as well... primarily; having the PS3 games stack up well against the PS2 games.

It's a mix of hardware and software, apparently, but I thought it was that the EE was being emulated? I remember Kutaragi saying that cell could be big-endian or little-endian to accomodate that (or so seemed to be the suggestion). It seems to make more sense if there was some hardware to support the graphics side of things, since GS is quite different from RSX. That could also, possibly, put the brakes on major graphical improvements, even AA.

FSAA is the 'least' likely enhancement you should expect. At least if you want any sort of decent compatibility.

For the record I think there's much higher chance that GS will be emulated in hardware and EE in software - which in essence will mean very little (if any) visual enhancements. Cell seems perfecly built to emulate EE in software. On the other hand I don't know how EDRAM on GS could be perfectly emulated on RSX.

What about mip-mapping or even anisotropic?

Nuts.

Corrected mipmapping and anisotropic should be pretty trivial without too much issues - assuming we're talking GS emulation of course.

Sony should have thought in this when PS2 development started...For instance making devs put the rendering resolutions at certain memory zones (so we could later change them easily on ALL games)...
This might sound stupid of course but well...If a strict normative had been done back then, certain things could be improved easily. Not that devs would like this...and not sure it would appliable to all games.
