Just did a full reinstall of Windows 10! Now, we're talking! Time to download 3DSMax, Steam, Substance and all the other shit I use! lol Gonna get this baby ready for the Rift as well even though I only have the Vive here in the house so far.

When you guys are choosing where to install, make sure to delete all the partitions on the drive that HP put in there. I think specifically all their bloatware was in the OEM partition. It's nice to have a completely clean install.

Did you encounter any issues when doing a fresh install? Thinking about doing it myself, but worried about activation issues, driver issues, and/or overwriting the recovery partition. Did you just download the W10 installer off the MS website?

Okay I am close to just doing a clean install myself, I can get back to where I am right now in an hour or two if I do.
You used the link that was listed earlier in the thread to do so right?
And the only question I have is did you have to install any system drivers manually or did Windows 10 detect them all?

You'll just need a USB drive to put the media creation tool on it.

Windows 10 should be good at installing all the right drivers considering this is a modern system. If anything is missing, the software/drivers will always be found on HP's support site.

Windows 10 detected all of them. I just manually installed the Nvidia drivers from the site.

Figured I'd give another monitor update MX27AQ.

The colors are great on this thing! My wife did some photo stuff and she was more than pleased. I hooked up the Xbox and played Rocket League and Rainbow Six Siege. Both were great, input lag felt better than my JS9000 which is 16ms. Siege felt incredible. Up scaling looked good. Not quite as good as my JS9000 (4k obviously) but good, and it's sad but the color on this may be better. Anyway, I'll post tomorrow when I get it running some games from the HP. Probably going to do The Witcher 3, Squad, and I'll grab something else.

Thanks, I am at 46% with the download from the Media Creation Tool. I am doing it.
On my Mac and I am downloading the HP Drivers needed just in case.

Question # 1
Does the Windows 10 installer let you merge/combine partitions? I want that 13 GB from the Recovery Partition back HP installed if possible.

Question # 2
Did the comp automatically detect the USB boot drive upon restart or did you need to change the Boot Priority in the BIOS. If so which F button is it on an HP desktop to get into the BIOS?

Thank you for the help. I have done a decent amount of installs of Windows in the past, this is just my first with Windows 10. Last I did was Windows 7. And I tend to get a little OCD with this type of stuff and just like to know what to expect. So I appreciate the help, I really do.

I am also thinking this may be voiding the warranty, but fuck it. I want a clean install.
This Media Creation Tool will detect the proper version of Windows right? I sprung the extra money for Pro as I use Remote Desktop a decent amount. So I guess that is my final question, that I will get Pro as well. I am guessing the answer to that is a big yes, but again, I am a bit OCD so I apologize for asking obvious questions.

Which version of Windows you get is tied to the key on your motherboard. There is no way to get the HP recovery partition with this method. Windows 10 does have it's own recovery process though so you can always start fresh if things go wrong later on.

You misunderstood my question. I want to delete the HP Recovery Partition, not keep it, and was just verifying the Win 10 installer allows one to merge/format partitions.
I am about to find out one way or the other. Doing it all now.

Okay, I want to make sure I do not fuck this up. So first off here is a camera pic of the partitions. The one I have selected is where my current install of Windows resides. I would just choose it correct?
p9Nb.jpg

So once I choose it, I first get a pop up message about a windows.old folder will be created. When I click Next on it, I get a message about "the partitions on the disk selected are not in the recommended order. For more information about GPT disks blah blah blah"
When I went to the MS site and searched GPT, I saw something about my motherboard possibly not supporting UEFI I believe it was.
q9Nb.jpg

So can I ignore the message about GPT accordingly and just continue with the installation of Windows on Drive 0 Partition 3 Windows??

It looks like I am not going to be able to get rid of the HP recovery drive unless I delete it, so guessing I will just keep it. Might not be a bad idea for warranty purposes anyway.

So if anyone can confirm the above asap it would be appreciated. Especially someone who has done it on THIS specific computer.

TIA,
DL

So...

Anyone try to get a Samsung 950 Pro NVMe M.2 SSD to work with this thing?

I installed it in the long M.2 slot (had to take out half the cables in the machine plus pull the GPU, and I had to find my own retaining screw because HP didn't see fit to include one, sigh).

Unfortunately the BIOS won't recognize it or try to boot from it.

Funnily enough, after booting into Windows 10 from the SATA hard drive, Windows sees the SSD just fine and will let me format it and everything.

I guess the BIOS doesn't understand NVMe, and won't detect it for booting.

Unless I did something wrong? Is there some firmware setting or dip switch on the motherboard I don't know about, which I have to flip to enable booting from NVMe?

Edit:

MY BAD. The UEFI firmware won't show a device for booting unless it detects a system partition on the disk.

I disconnected the 2TB hard disk, then booted from USB, wiped the SSD during setup, then Windows populated all the correct partitions, and everything just worked.

I deleted all those partitions. The OEM partition is what holds all the bloatware shit.

I wanted to do it today but some stuff came up not sure yet when I'll do it. I looked it over and it shouldn't be a problem.

I do love the blu ray drive on the envy being behind the logo tho. I'm gnna be sad when I take it out.

Nice!

1 thing tho with cdkeys buy using PayPal just in case. (It's easier to get a refund)

Played Rainbow Six Siege on this with a few friends yesterday for a few hours. Ran like a champ on 1440p on max settings. The game itself is actually really fun especially if you're playing with friends and don't take it too seriously

Yea this thing is awesome so far. I didn't expect it to come so early, so I'm stuck waiting for Windows 10 to download. I actually tried ordering from ******** (I'm guessing that site is not allowed here, lol), and it worked great. I bought the $1 protection or whatever and ended up with The Witcher 3 for $22.

I'm excited to try this. I played the crap out of it for the Xbox. It's going to be a fun weekend.

Does anyone know if you can get an HDMI hub that allows you to select which screen the signal goes to. I am trying to figure out a way to easily switch between my 4k TV and the monitor. I am also looking for a breakaway USB cable so that I don't have to worry about my dogs pulling my tower over while couch gaming!

Just to be clear, does this rig support (and can the 500w PSU handle) the kind of clocks Digital Foundry was able to get on these parts - 4.6GHz on the 6700k, and +200MHz/+400MHz on the 980Ti?

Or is that asking too much of an OEM? I'm not sure what kind of rig or cooling DF was using.

4.6 GHz on the 6700k is an OC right? You'd need a z-series board to OC the CPU, not to mention a better cooler.

I doubt it and I don't think you will need to over lock any of it to play any game well.

I've seen people mention the CPU is overclockable on this unit.

The mobo is limited in internal expansion opportunities but is showing no problems and I can OC the CPU in the bios if I want to.

I think this uses a Z170 board so you can overclock the 6700K.
Even if HP dont allow you to do that in the bios, you can download Intel's XTU app and tweak inside Windows itself.

It would be nice to get some confirmation.

Oh, I have no doubt this would kick ass at stock clocks, but I want to push it as far as it can go. If it only draws 400w at max load as people are claiming, there is plenty of headroom for at least a reasonable amount of overclocking.

Here's the monitor I decided on getting for this. 25inch 1440p IPS at 60hz for $260. The closest 27"ers in price are still at the least 60 bucks more, are almost all TN, and have notable input lag in reviews that I could find.

Basically decided I'm not ready to shell out for the crazy $600+ 144hz g-sync stuff without a big sale, considering I didn't shell out for a new computer until this big sale hit. Also I play console games on a 32" 720p screen...so this will double as a new TV for them.

What's you do with "unallocated space". It won't let me do anything with those. I have two of them about 14gb between them

Not sure you can do anything with those. The Windows installation requires 32 gb at least. Did you try deleting all the partitions?

I deleted all the ones it would let me. I now have

Drive 0 Unallocated space 488mb
Drive 0 Partition 1 1849.5 GB Primary
Drive 0 Unallocated space 13.1 gb

Edit. OK I used Extend on the Partion 1 and consumed the second Unallocated space. Can't get rid of the other but it's not that much space

Edit edit. OK that screwed something up. We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one...

Thanks. After a few moments of panic I hit the Windows forum. It's something to do with the installer. So you X out of that window and then the next, allowing the computer to reboot directly to the thumb drive again, this gives you more options for the drives on the drives page. I was finally able to delete the large partition making the entire drive Unallocated space. It's installing now, no issue. Thanks everyone.

I was thinking, this is going to be the most embarrassing call to HP, and my wife is going to make fun of me for a year, at least.

So just to clarify as I have not done it yet (I posted at like 1 AM last night), you just deleted all of the partitions, including the one with Windows on it, to create one large partition of Unallocated space then installed on that one?
And I may have to X out of 2 windows and restart in order to see the option to delete everything?

Or I can manually delete the partitions above following the YouTube video above and then install on the one large partition?

Did it all work out for you? Just curious.

Yea that's right. Since I had already deleted the windows partition, the youtube video suggestion didn't work for me. Keep your phone or another computer nearby and we can help you through it if you get stuck. But if you get to the point where it's not giving you the option to delete a partition, you go through the X out process, let it reboot into the installer and then it should be there. I'm up and running now with no issues.

Getting files ready for installation. Wish me luck! I have a Macbook right next to me so if something goes wrong, I will be back with a quickness.
Will post either way.
Thanks again for the patience everyone.

Thanks again all for all the help. My biggest obstacle is getting my Remote Desktop Sharing set up again, I never remember how I did it LOL

TBH this is why I was so hesitant to do this. I already had everything installed and running nice and tight, including Siege and the Doom Beta, but it was just in the back of my head that the install itself was tainted. Haha So yeah I decided instead of playing today it will be about getting the OS running tip top.
I am already super glad I did this as it is ever so slightly snappier as well. Do not get me wrong, it was pretty damn snappy before doing this, but now it is just super, super quick with everything.

So yeah I am just letting Windows do it's thing. It currently found three unknown devices and is installing the necessary files for them. Just kind of letting it do it's thing and while doing so I just set up my shared folders and Remote Access (I think).

Did people not install any of the drivers HP provides? For stuff like the Realtec, Bluetooth, etc. etc.? I downloaded them all and have them on my NAS if needed, so just curious.

Once Windows Update is done will be installing the Nvidia Drivers.

I let the Windows update find stuff and everything is working.
Okay cool. I will do the same. I am surprised it installed the Bangen Ollufson on its own but that takes care of one I was wondering if I needed or not.

I have to give credit where credit is due. I have owned a Windows PC for Gaming for close to 15 years now, however Windows was or never has been my main OS. I do design so I learned and continued to use a Mac for my primary computing. I always dreaded doing things like this in Windows as it was always such a process. Now they no doubt improved the process with Windows 7 then 8, but they really have gotten it to something painless and smooth with 10. I was up and running with this clean install in well under and hour and I already have half of my "necessary apps" installed.

Really could not be easier these days. Which is not always what my experience has been. My hats off to them.

Yea, I made the switch to Mac after back to back horrible experiences with Dell and HP about 10 years ago. I've been Mac ever since. A few months ago my MacBook wouldn't stop asking me to sign into icloud. It happened repeatedly on my iPhone and MacBook. Customer service couldn't figure it out, so I dumped them both. Windows 10 has been great.

So.... If I didn't upgrade the Wifi I won't be able to connect to 5ghz Wireless networks?

So.... If I didn't upgrade the Wifi I won't be able to connect to 5ghz Wireless networks?
Hmmm, that could be a possibility but it should not be. What I would do is log into your router and change the name of the 5ghz network and see if you can connect once you change the name.
If you can it just means the computer is defaulting to the 2.4 for whatever reason. You can probably Google it to find out why. Wether devices default to 5GHz has always been iffy for me as well. Changing the name of my 5GHz network and seeing if the device can in fact connect is always a good first troubleshooting step. Good Luck.

So from the time I posted saying I was doing it to right now I am pretty much not only back up and running but have all the apps I had installed from my first day with the PC and HP's bastardized OS.

Feels great to be on a clean install. Thanks again everyone for the help. Now to just download all my games!!

Another question...does the motherboard support higher-bandwidth RAM? According to DF memory bandwidth makes a huge difference for Skylake processors (more than clock speed) and I get 3200MHz RAM from Newegg for $85. That would be a trivial upgrade to perform, assuming it works, which it should. It would add just that much more future proofing to the system.

The HP page definitely does not say if it does.
What you can maybe do is use a RAM picker from one of the RAM manufacturers out there, for example I used the Crucial one on their website to determine if the RAM I was getting from Amazon was compatible, and you can see what RAM they say can be purchased for this Desktop.

With the above said, checking the Crucial site on my own right now, I do not see any mention of 3200MHz RAM. I believe this link should take you right to the Crucial RAM picker with the PC already chosen.

I believe the truth of the situation is it will not support that high of a frequency on your RAM and you are making some concessions going with this desktop. It is an HP afterall. However for the price, I am super satisfied with my purchase. I also am going to leave it all at default. No OC'ing, etc.

draughn101 any update on that 5GHZ WiFi??

EDIT - Also draughn101, with the ASUS monitor are you using HDMI or Display Port to connect it? I am picking it up I believe!!

Narrowed it down to a Acer Predator G-Sync 1980 or aNon G-Sync ASUS IPS 2560.

What does GAF say???
I am leaning towards higher resolution myself, but if I can be convinced the G-Sync is the better purchase, feel free.

And if people can answer in the next hour so I can order in time to have it arrive on Monday that would be ideal.

I'm really digging the higher resolution, but that's just me. I think the resolution with the color of the IPS is tough to beat. I use the HDMI to connect to this monitor. If I had the money to do IPS and G-Sync I would. My wife is also using this computer as a workstation for editing photos, and a low res or TN panel won't cut it. I now have my MX27AQ Brightness at 0. It was seriously melting my eyeballs.

Still haven't tried the 5ghz yet. I am not seeing any of them in the selections (my neighbors have some too). I am too dedicated to downloading these games to stop, lol. I have a powerlink adapter that I am using now and it's exponentially faster than the wifi.

For the guy asking about the ram, I don't think it's supported either. My plan is in a year or two to upgrade the mobo, and maybe get a new case. It kicks everything's ass now, so I don't see the point in stressing about it now. The $600 discount was more than enough incentive to jump now. You still have components that you can shift to another build if need be in the future.
