camera-based inside-out tracking is always going to have a bad time when there's nothing to track. Walk up close to a plain white wall and no algorithm in the world will save you.I think the lighthouses will be around for a while yet.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
I love the Vive, but I'm doing a prestige project at work with long hours, and a two-year old kid at home.. So I'm starting to think that the Vive may be a bit too expensive to just sit in its box most of the time..
However, I have no problem taking a 300-400 dollar "loss" if I could upgrade to a new HMD at a later stage and reuse the basestations and controllers. Does anyone have a guess what the chance is for the lighthouses and controllers being compatible with next generation HMDs?

TLDR; Is there any chance that the base stations and controllers will be re-used for a next- coming gen HMD?

Certainly hope not for the base station. I hope that for next gen htc vive setup, the base stations will include internal battery so we wouldnt need to plug them into the wall sockets to use them. Just charge them and then they can last for 8 hours of something

Its is big challenge for VR enthusiasts to find event plces to demostrate htc vive when you need so many wall plugs to use it and the PC

You can power them with an external battery with an adapter, but I agree that it would be nice to have a battery compartment.

They'd have to make them a lot bigger to hold a battery with enough capacity to run them for any reasonable time. You're talking a LED array, two lasers, two HDD motors, Bluetooth, etc. Then they'd look worse on the walls where most people are using them. I really don't see them going that way. Use an external battery pack if you're on the go.

I think battery-powered lighthouses could be an option for short demonstrations, but really, a fixed installation is the way to go if at all possible -- also in terms of convenience. (Convenience not of the initial setup, but of just starting VR and being ready to play in a minute in normal use)

Anyway, I think it's not unlikely that there will be a HMD-only upgrade option for "Vive 2".

Does Raw Data still run like absolute garbage for anyone else? The game is unplayable unless I turn reprojection on and put the settings to medium or lower.

I have an i5-6600K and a GTX 1080 SC
It doesn't run like "absolute garbage" for me (on a 5820k and OC'd 1080), but it's easily the most technically demanding VR game currently available. I run it with a mixture of high and low settings and 1.2 resolution multiplier in-game (with the default value in the SteamVR settings).

I hope they implement more of the VR-specific optimizations continuously coming to UE4. That said, the game is worth it.

It'll never happen, but a switch to a forward renderer would be great. DEXED looks so much cleaner than any of the other UE4 games I've played.

I wasn't aware that DEXED used the UE4 forward renderer with MSAA, that makes me want to try it out ASAP.

(I guess I should also get off my ass and simply try it in-engine)

It's not listed anywhere as a feature, but if you watch the second video, they mention that by using the forward renderer branch from Oculus, they were able to increase resolution by 40%, add MSAA, etc. It's pretty evident when you're in game, and night and day if you switch between it and Raw Data.

The realisation that there is a possibility of a headset-only option has me more likely to keep my current one. I'd lose a few hundred selling it (although the brexit price hike helps a little), and a possible headset only model could be a couple hundred less expensive. Almost at the point where I might as well keep it for shits and giggles

Not sure what you're saying. If I understand correctly, I don't follow your logic lol.

:)

I could sell my vive now, and then buy another one when vive 2 comes out. But I'd lose some money selling the vive, and I would have to buy a full vive 2 including lighthouses and controllers.

Alternatively I could keep my vive and then just replace the headset when vive 2 is out.

Overall cost might be fairly similar but I'd get to keep my vive in the meantime.

Asks questions so Ezalc doesn't have to
So I totally neeeeeeed to clean the foam on my vive cover (don't have the waterproof one yet) and I've read it can be submerged in hot water to remove the crap but Vive's instructions say not to... would doing so mess with the adhesive or something?

I don't think it would mess with the adhesive, since it's just velcro. I still probably wouldn't recommend it unless you're okay with the possibility of having to get a replacement.

Okay, I'll try the standard way first and see how that goes.

The Lab (duh), Gnomes and Gobblins, Waltz of the Wizard to name some of the non-social ones. The later two are more experiences than outright games though.

Games that come with your Vive are probably a good bet, but besides that:

- The Lab
- Budget Cuts demo
- Destinations is getting fun stuff
- Gnomes & Goblins (preview)
- NVidia VR Funhouse, but not sure how well it'll run on a 970

http://www.omnipudding.com/downloads/

The GPU Cubes demo on this website is also pretty neat, but last time I tried the most recent version I thought the default settings were a bit bad and some features weren't working well for me. There should be a paid version with all kinds of other stuff this month on Steam though.

In addition to what everyone else said, Budget Cuts Demo, NVidia Funhouse, and Star Wars Trials on Tatooine are all worth playing. 970 is fine, I have one.

Neat! Welcome aboard!
Looking at my Steam list these stood out:

The Lab
Waltz of the Wizard
Destinations
Rec Room
Surge - VR Music Video
The Foo Show
Portal Stories - If you have Portal 2
Nekopalive :D lol!

Do you know if you'll get the three free codes? Check your mail and junk mail if so but i don't know if the offer is still on.
I also found some on wearvr.com like the Doll City Demo.

I've been meaning to make some Gifs of some cool gameplay moments that I've had but I'm not sure what the best way to record video would be. I've never used it before but I have Shadowplay, is it feasible to use for VR games?

"This is a preview episode of The FOO Show. We'll be publishing weekly starting this summer" - that didn't happen.

That preview episode is great though!

I think there will be a new episode, featuring the presentation from XoXo, soon. Will told me last week that they were working on the audio for it.

If you like Table tennis then Paddle up is the best choice, it has multiplayer, fairly good AI, a few challenge modes and it looks pretty nice, and it feels fairly accurate to the real thing. Raw data is pretty good too but i would honestly wait for a sale, almost 40€ for it is a bit too much, around 20 i would recommend it instantly, though it probably wouldn't run all that well on a 970.

Also remember to grab your free promo games, currently they should be Zombie survival trainer which is fun in short bursts, some adventure game that seemed pretty cool and finally Tilt brush.

thanks for the suggestions guys. Setup the vive last night and had so much fun. A friend and I could literally not stop laughing when we both tried it on just because of how GOOD it really was. crazy.

unfortunately... Two hours into the fun the headset stopped tracking. No idea what's wrong with it now, but the headset will not track. It just keeps saying 'Move headset so that it can be seen" or something similar. I want to try it on another PC, but not sure when I'm gonna have access to that. My PC actually says the USB does not deliver enough power. Updated headset firmware, no luck. I don't really know where to go from here. so upsetting :O

e: i should add that it does sometimes pick up the headset when the headset is like still for a second. It's variable.

Something I've noticed (that I'm pretty sure wasn't there when I first set it up) is a fairly regular tracking/framerate stutter. About once a second or maybe a little faster. It's most noticeable when turning my head quickly. Happens in all apps as far as I can tell. Anyone experience the same thing? Am running an i5 3570 and a geforce 1070.

That's not at all normal. You can try to enable the performance tracking chart in the developer settings and see if there is anything unusual in that.

Tried a different USB port? you're not running the USB through a hub or anything right?

Try minimizing the screen mirror on your monitor, see if that helps. Do you have any downloads going on that can put a load on your HDD, could add latency when reading from disk. Unlikely but should probably check any and all things that can impact performance.

just through the 3.0 on my PC. tried a different one too without luck. just not sure what happened as it was working great for the first two hours.

Try switching to a USB 2.0 some have had better luck with that. Also, does the light on the side of the HMD turn green. Are your Lighthouses fully functional (I think you can take a picture of them with your mobile and it'll be easy to tell if all is well with it).

I'm gonna check it out again during lunch today. Will report back. Is there a way to reset the firmware of the HMD? I've found varying steps to do so.

That seems like an issue several people have had with the last couple NVIDIA drivers. I had it myself and fixed it by reverting to 368.81. Worth a shot.

So I had a psvr pre-ordered forever and I have been back and forth about wanting to keep it or not. Even on gaf I have been saying i'll keep the psvr, try it and see if I want to keep it.

I ordered a Vive lol. My biggest concern living in Canada was ordering the Vive from the U.S. and if it didn't work well or made me sick returning it would be a hassle. It turns out that the MS store are selling them now through their Canadian portal AND if there are issues then I can bring it to a store to return it. So that means I have a good 30 or so days test it.

I think the psvr will be a sufficient vr device but I have a good pc so I might as well get the best one. I still think that later psvr titles will probably benefit from the pro despite the pr and that is another $400 so might as well pay an extra $500 now and get the Vive(my efforts to justify the purchase haha.)

Question:

Is there a current bundle of free software with it to get a feel for the device?

Ok been reading up and it seems there is some free software to get me going. I'm pretty excited!

There are quite a few free games and experiences (and demos) on Steam to test out the Vive with, plus the current bundle offer of Zombie Training Simulator, Tilt Brush and Call of the Starseed.

You can also get some games and demos from outside of Steam like itch.io.

The Lab is free on Steam and is a great showcase of what it can do. Don't know if you still get codes for Job Simulator and Tilt Brush with new Vives but if so they are also great. Rec Room is a free social space VR app and might just be the best thing in VR too.

If you didn't see it, just further up this page there's a bunch of free games/experiences listed outside of the bundled games (whatever they are now). It has come a long ways on that front from the launch days where there wasn't that much out there, free or otherwise.

It was mentioned a bit further up, but I really think that the QuiVR "demo" (it's more like early access without a payment) needs to be on any great free VR list.

It's fun alone and even more fun with 3 random people.

aha. I did update my drivers, but that was to enable sound over displayport, which I need for the Vive >_<

back to Maplin for yet more video cable dongles!

Thanks guys I'm downloading some of the freebies now. I pray to god this thing doesn't make me puke. I had no issues with rift and the psvr when I tried them at fan expo this year but I guess it all depends on what you are playing.

Vive and roomscale is the least likely to make you puke.

Just speaking statistically, Vive games are generally less likely to make you sick than PSVR and Rift games, since they are less likely to feature artificial movement.

So this sucks. Turned on my Vive yesterday and was getting a lot of glitchy static in one eye. After messing around with stuff I figured out the issue is the HDMI connection in the headset. Everything is fine if I push on it at a certain angle, but it's not something I can even feasibly jerry rig. The worst part is I don't know if it's the actual headset connection or just the 3in1 cable. I was going to order a new cable online but they're out of stock right now so I guess I'll have to deal with the notoriously terrible HTC support.

Just use any old HDMI cable to test the cable case. The HDMI part of the 3 in 1 is just a standard cable merged with a nonstandard USB and standard power.

I've been thinking of getting of a Vive but I would be completely starting from scratch hardware-wise which makes this about a $2500 investment for me (I want a 1080 cause I want the next PC I get to last me awhile). I do have a new-ish Asus gaming laptop with a 980m in it that I could sell to help fund this venture, but I haven't decided what way to go with this yet. BTW are Vive demos still a thing? I have no idea where to even look for that stuff.

Some Microsoft stores have Vive demos. Not sure about other places.
