So I tried Vivecraft, and found that normal minecraft is dull and fiddly in VR, and I didn't really get any tremendous sense of place. But then I tried out the 100% scale option and OMG. It's like strolling around on an enourmous model railway diroama or something. Just like in that Hololens demo. I spent ages just sat on the floor of my lounge, surrounded by the GAFland server. In fact I'm going back there right now :D

Is 100% scale not the default anymore? It was when I last played it.

So I contacted the developers about perhaps opening up an opt-in beta for preliminary VR support.

Any chances Valve will improve the desktop view in Steam?
I have no idea if they will, but funnily enough the desktop view is significantly (significantly) improved if you choose a higher resolution multiplier. With e.g. a 1.5 multiplier a 1080p desktop gets pretty good in terms of readability.

Raw Data's controls are really unfortunate.
What? Raw Data's controls are fantastic.

Please elaborate.

Speaking of porn, apart from 180° videos, is there any good actual 3d rendered porn/hentai games in VR?

Honey Select has a Vive mod that allows you to view the game from the inside. It has some issues, in that the graphics are either too blurry or too dull, plus it's a bit jumpy (the mod is still in progress), but if you want to create people and watch them fuck in 3d and first person (and even have an option for the pov of the main character) it seems like Honey Select is the best option.

So I've heard...

It's full Minecraft in VR with hands and teleportation for movement (you can change movement controls too). The Node team on Youtube played some of it if you want to see what it's like.

Seems like it would be weird playing at 100x size.

So your actual self is still defined as being located at one specific point, right? So you might suddenly realize you're taking damage and need to look down in amongst the trees and valleys and find the lil' zombie hammering on "you?"

I think it means the world is 100x the size?

(Maybe not)

So far, my biggest issue with VR has been one of space, in that it feels like I don't have enough. Length is fine, in that I have 9 feet, which feels like plenty. In width, however, I only have 6ft. This means that if I'm standing in the middle, I can take one big step to the left or right and that's it. It feels like it holds me back, since I'm somewhat nervous about moving my arms around in some spaces, and therefore, I don't really move around that much.

I could move a bookshelf downstairs and get an extra 16 inches, but I don't really know if that'll be worth the hassle. I can't play the Star Wars experience (which isn't a big deal, but still kind of irritating), or this one RPG, since my space is below the requirements. One big thing I noticed is when I recently rewatched Giantbomb playing Rec Room and Jeff was able to walk around the entire inside of the room in the middle there and that would take me two teleports to do. If I could walk that much, it'd be awesome.

Still, I am really enjoying everything else about this, and it is really cool.

Nah the way they were talking about like standing amidst a model train set, and being like the hololens demos. I can see the appeal, it's cool to look down on a little world of buildings you and your friends made. Just seems like the idea of still being a tiny living being in that world would feel strange.

Oh it's strictly for sightseeing in Creative mode. Pointless trying to "play" that way.

Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but to those who own the blu, try watching Luminous Abyss again. They added a surprise at the end. It's worth it.

As of when? Could you spoil it?

Last I saw
everything just fled pretty quickly and you never saw what they were escaping from and the credits rolled.

Speaking of top-down, I miss Suwapyon Cubic from the DK2 days and wish there was a way to play it in current VR.

Will ReVive not work? I'm not familiar with this game/software specifically but I was under the impression ReVive was the solution for most/all old DK1/DK2 demos.

I didn't even realize there were settings. Are they in Steam Big Picture somewhere? I'll dig around.

A type of gameplay I've been dreaming about making someday.

Your head is on the inside of a cube, like, you're in a room basically but it's a small room centered around your head so the walls are closer, I guess.

You play the game on the walls of the cube, and can walk onto the ceiling or floor. Maybe for ease of playing you can rotate the cube in any direction independently of moving your character, so you don't have to actually turn around, or strain your neck looking up for long periods of time.

The game itself is not important, just the idea of controlling a "bug on a wall," essentially.

Maybe you're on the inside of a sphere and it's a lush Age of Empires type thing going on in any direction you look.

Maybe it's a stone roguelike dungeon. Maybe whenever you go down the stairs you're actually moving outward to another cube that is slightly bigger, as the inner one fades out.

That particular setting is in a configuration file.
(You need to be a bit careful with it since it applies to everything, including most games, and can have a huge performance impact)

True.

Not if they didn't get updated to the CV1 runtime.

To add to this: There's an Advanced Settings Overlay that someone made that allows you to mess with this with a slider in headset. It adds an advanced settings bubble to the overlay the same way Revive does and has a bunch of other options as well such as extra chaperone settings and turning reprojection on and off.

Is anyone having issues recently with the headset button no longer working? Mine has stopped working. Not sure exactly, some time in the last 3 weeks.

Haha, I was going to say I only recall getting that thing to work like once. Though I have also never felt particularly compelled to use it, either.

Comes in handy for me when I want to play gamepad games (House of the Dying Sun, Redout, etc). Basically when I'm too lazy to be bothered to reach for a Vive controller.

I feel you. Wish I had that 4x4m empty space so I could walk any direction with my arms extended.

Uses grip buttons instead of triggers, even though you don't need to use both at once - could just trigger near hip to holster. Reloading is really clunky when you're trying to do it quickly, and the motion has your hands close together, often bumping the heads into each other.

I just got my Vive last night and im very happy with it. Just having my gf try it out was worth the purchase for me (she did the squid-part of theblu which i hadnt tried myself, was amazing).

Anyway, im curious: What good driving and flying games are there? I would love to try some out.

Thanks!

Don't know about flying, but Project Cars and Live For Speed support Vive out of the box (the latter is getting a bit long in the tooth graphics wise, but the basic edition is free). Dirt Rally and Assetto Corsa work with the Revive plugin. Euro Truck Sim and American Truck Sim also support Vive, but they can be a bit rough around the edges. Then there is Distance, which isn't strictly a driving game, but there is a car on a track involved at least.

The space needed for optimal experience is certainly a hindrance.

I am glad some people will get to experience a more interactive experience at the same time. Not really used my Vive in the last few weeks but I am holding on to it in the hope that some great experiences come further down the road. Really fancy Doom VR.

Is there any footage of the locomotion in Doom VR?

Assuming you're using sticky mode, I can't see why the grip buttons would be a problem. Perhaps it's a hand shape/size thing, but I've never found the grip buttons hard to press or anything.

I will say that I prefer H3VR's handgun reloading (with auto-orientation and clipping) to Raw Data's. Since everything is manual in H3VR, the reload speed is 100% dependent on the user. Raw Data has some of it automated and ends up being slower. Then again, Raw Data is going for the semi-RPG route where you can upgrade skills, and allow for things like dual wielding reloads. Trade-offs had to be made. Still doesn't change the fact that I prefer H3VR for pure reloading.
