another race, on earth or what? so these guys are no longer mutants but now they're aliens? that's fine.
honestly the x-men shouldn't even exist in the marvel universe anyways. mutants are always getting discriminated on and yet other dudes like spiderman get praised within the same world. it just makes the good guys look like assholes in the end.

They are Kree experimentations dating back thousands of years. Used to hide out on earth, then went to the moon, then went to the Kree homeworld, then back to earth.
Still no idea if QS&SW are Inhumans though. That's purely speculation due to assumptions that they will be Inhumans in the movies and thus Marvel is changing the comics to match the movies.

There seems to be a Universal set of Inhumans though that was created through experimentation of other species in the Universe.

No, he got new powers (timetravel related) from Terrigen mists. He got his actual speedster powers back later when House of M was retconned.
Yeah, it's weird. Considering Magneto being their parent was itself a retcon from back in 1983 and that there was so much debate about it, you would think there would have been a storyline where they got a DNA test or something to make sure and cement it.

Thinking about it, I believe this very blatant retcon is mostly to please the lawyers. If they have Scarlet Witch rewrite reality, it'd just be "Yeah, well, she and Quicksilver were mutants and Magneto's kids at SOME point, so they're fair game for Fox". In this case, it's a lot more absolute and allows for less loopholes.
Not sure if this actually changes the legal situation of the characters, but if it did, then I can see why they're making it "The Maximoffs being Mags' kids was a lie all along!" instead of anything else.

Quicksilver had white hair long before the retcon of the Maximoffs' parentage in 1983. That was the main reason why they decided to go through with it, in the first place, I believe.
Also, Age of Apocalypse is an alternate universe. The portrayal of any characters from there is not according to the main universe.

That movie is why they are doing this. It's been said by quite a few people in the comic business that Marvel is trying to separate themselves from anything that Fox produces (X-men and Fantastic four). The FF had their books put on hiatus and they've been trying their damnedest to phase out mutants (even though they had several points where they tried to revive them), even killing off Wolverine. They want to make sure Fox has a limited source of mutants to use.

They can still be mutants and not his children. As was the case for the first 20 years of their existence.

How does that even work? Just because character X is dead now, or character Y isn't a mutant now doesn't change that they were alive and mutant before. And since FOX's movies are very loosely based on comic books it shouldn't really matter to them what's the current status in comic book universe.
If Wanda was considered Magneto's daughter for the last several years many people who doesn't follow current comic book storylines will still consider her that. They don't care that Marvel retconned this recently.

Hell no. Rebooting just compounds the problem. Marvel's method of simply ignoring the dumb stuff is vastly superior to constantly hammering the reset button every few years.
I don't read a lot of DC. Why/how does rebooting cause more problems than retconning?
I feel like most of Marvel's beef with Fox is with the Fantastic Four rights. The mutants are more-or-less caught in the crossfire.
And to be fair, GotG did beat DoFP.
Comics' highs are HIGH and lows are really low. That's how we do it...
But that was a stupid way. Not even Wanda knew what happened. Marvel plz

They don't want to make new characters because those new characters would belong to Fox for cinematic usage. Retconning existing characters doesn't change the legal usage. At most they could try to go back to court for the rights but for characters like SW and QS, it would likely still end up split usage for the same reasons it went that way to begin with. The characters have a history both with X men and without.

616 has become a patchwork of recons, weird unexplained character turns and events that completely ignore the internal logic of the world because logic doesn't live here anymore. 616 is badly in need of a universe wide reboot.
The thing with reboots, you simply trade one convoluted continuity for another convoluted continuity.
