Hulk Hogan suing Gawker Media for $100 Million USD

Well, this is a super one-sided feud if I ever saw one.

So this company made probably hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars publishing articles proclaiming moral outrage re: a leak of nude photos of attractive young women in the prime of their careers, yet also made a ton of money posting and commenting on the sex tape of a washed-up, broken down old man, humiliating him in the process?

Fuck them. Burn the whole goddamn network of sites to the ground, they are absolute trash.

Hulk has every right to be outraged that Gawker refused to remove the sex tape when asked.

Hulk has every right to be outraged at an outlet leaking his sex tape.

Gawker took the tape down once the lawsuit hit them, what they refused to do was also take down the news post, which they're entitled to keep up.

I think there is a vast difference between my sex tape and hogan's. I don't think a media outlet should be able to publish anything but I think the first amendment means we should give them wide latitude

So who determines where the line is drawn, if not the courts?

Hulk Hogan sues gossip rag for $100 million for hosting video of him fucking Bubba the Love Sponge's wife.

That's the most American thing I've ever read.

Io9 is fantastic. It would suck to lose them.

I think the iCloud photo scandal was the catalyst for the lawsuit. Maybe time to prepare a case? Gawker sites refused outright to display and showed much disapproval of the iCloud leaks. However refused to remove Hogan's sex tape despite having orders from a judge and after repeated requests.

This has been on going since well before the iCloud thing happened.

Good lord, their response to the lawsuit is incredible.

Start with a pompous and tone deaf tite: "The price of free journalism"

Really? A sex tape is journalism these days? I know it's click bait, but journalism? No.

Then he says:
I should make it clear: we would have settled too, in the interest of fighting another day, if Hogan’s demands were reasonable and the story flawed in any way. But now that the trial is on, we intend to fight it as far as we need to and we can.

Oh, you mean like following a court order? Yeah, totally unreasonable.

Does anyone know what judge is presiding over Hogan's lawsuit?

It would be poetic if it's the same judge who issued the court order that Gawker refused to follow.

That judge would throw the book at them.

Remember when Gawker posted Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" script?

"Gawker Media has made a business of predatory journalism, violating people’s rights to make a buck," Tarantino said in his lawsuit. "This time they went too far. Rather than merely publishing a news story reporting that Plaintiff’s screenplay may have been circulating in Hollywood without his permission, Gawker Media crossed the journalistic line by promoting itself to the public as the first source to read the entire Screenplay illegally."

Goddamn. Basically the same exact scenario for Hogan. Instead of posting that Hogan's sex tape has been in circulation, they posted the video up for all to see (until after taking it down many months later).

I'd like to hear an argument why they didn't host any other recent celebrity leaks then. They just sound like awful hypocrites who can't admit that they did something immoral.

What they did to Hulk Hogan was wrong and stupid. I would somewhat miss Jalopnik but Gawker Media will get investors before shutting down.

I seem to recall that they didn't take it down when asked, and bragged about it? Like that was a headline? "Hulk wants us to take down his sex tape but we refused lol"?

The headline was oddly specific: "A Judge Told Us to Take Down Our Hulk Hogan Sex Tape Post. We Won't."

They very explicitly complied with the order to remove the video, but not the column of words underneath it.

Edit: Of course, they immediately linked to a copy of it on DailyMotion, so their overtures about free speech and what not don't exactly ring with authenticity. I'm not convinced it would be a good thing for Gawker to lose this case, as much distaste as the very mention of the network triggers in several vocal GAF posters.

hey, remember when Gawker posted the leaked script for The Hateful Eight, and they refused to take it down after Tarantino asked them to?

Remember that?

Somebody was going to get these guys, it just turned out to be the Hulkster OH YEAHHHHH!

I think it would be a great thing. I don't hate Gawker but especially in this case they deserve to lose it.
