Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

I really don't want to drop the "git gud" comment, but man him complaining that the game was too hard really made want to.

Do you play and enjoy Souls games, Salt and Sanctuary, Bayonetta, DmC etc? These games are challenging sure, but if you don't get greedy, play patiently and understand the game mechanics then they are all able to be beaten. Same goes for this.

Kyle Bosman talked about Bloodborne and it's game of year chances last year at The Game Awards. His comment was "while the game is great, I don't think it has much change for GotY because games journalists aren't very good at video games". While a hilarious comment, he isn't wrong.

Bottom line is Hyper Light Drifter is wonderful! Don't let one person complaining that the game is too hard turn you off.

It is wonderful but that doesn't mean the game can't be criticised.
I finally beat that boss but it didn't feel good (like in Dark Souls). The game is still amazing so far, but don't compare it to DmC or Dark Souls. It's really a bad comparison.
Edit: Hier stand Unsinn

Also I'm not a "journalist" and I still think the boss battles (or at least the one I've had so far) are fucked. And before you ask: I love the Souls series, yes and I beat all the Souls games.

So like how brutally difficult is this game really? The RPS piece is making me wonder if this game is right for me.

If you learn the mechanics of the game, it's completely fair. It's just not a button masher.

Edit: It still is difficult, but it's fair. Tread carefully.

Okay, got it. I'll probably end up biting. Speaking of, if anyone has an extra key from backing that they are interested in selling, PM me.

Anyone got a hint for me?

Spoilers for the eastern part of the game:

I've defeated the frog boss and have activated all four triangular pillars as well as the "boss" pillar. On returning to the door that the "shadow dog" walked to earlier, which is the only thing I can still do (I guess I need a "double dash" ability to get some of the yellow upgrade cubes), I still can't seem to open it. Is it actually telling me that I should have none of the pillars activated to open it? Or have I missed something?

Non-spoilers for that section - the boss of the eastern section is very fair, and I SUCK at games. Sensible pattern prediction and a simple trick. Do not worry too much about difficulty, the game is sublime!

So glad to see this is currently at the top of the Steam Top Sellers list, above Dark Souls 3. I hope these guys earn a mint.

That comment states its an entirely new playable character. What you unlock for doing the chain dash challenges is just an aesthetic skin for the character/weapon/companion
OK, then is there currently a way to switch to the dfifferent playable character? I applied the Steam key to my account but I can't figure out how to enable it in-game.
Can anyone comment on keyboard and mouse vs controller? Is it recommended that I plug in a controller? If so can I use a dualshock 4?

I don't know about a Dualshock 4 but a controller is definitely the way to go. The big problem with keyboard and mouse is the way the dash ability is targeted towards your mouse cursor. It would be much more useful if you simply dashed in the direction last pressed on the keyboard.

Gamepad is like... semi-working for me. The face buttons work but the sticks / d-pad do not. Haven't gone past the main menu.

According to when you open the game, it's meant to be played with controller.

I can't imagine he got everything. My friends and I played the alpha to 100% and that took us 5 hours itself. That was like one area
Not everything. Gonna take a while for sure, lol.
Does anyone that didn't back the Kickstarter see an option for unlocking an alternate costume in-game? It's in the options menu somewhere.
You change outfits inside your house above your bed. There are three computers, one for companion, Sword, and outfit.

To any backers, I'm curious if there's a way to turn off the gold companion and weapon? I much prefer the default versions :/

Other than that, loving the game so far! It's everything I had hoped for.
See above.

Does anyone that DIDN'T back the game see an option to unlock an alternate costume in the game menus? I see it but I can't activate it until I finish the game.

I don't think so. I backed at a level that should give me the soundtrack yet I haven't seen an unlock key or anything.
I was able to change costumes before finishing the game. Costume was obtained before reaching the South area.

For the Dash challenge, the goals are
100
and
800
.

Also, has anyone else played the other mini game? Don't want to spoil the surprise.

734 then my damn hand slipped because it got sweaty lol. Hand starting to hurt now but papa bless long compile times.

Man, you really have to carefully consider your upgrades. What was the first upgrade you got?
The first Dash upgrade has to be the first upgrade. I can't see any other being that important.

For me the order was: Dash, Reflect projectiles, Health Pack, X + A Dash, others

Wait, what's the Dash Challenge? Where is that?
Where can I find the different upgrades, I only found the Health/Pistol/Bomb ones so far?

Thanks. The only computer that's working for me is the companion one. I'm not sure if I have to play more before the other two start working.

I can't imagine relying on Walker for any kind of critique. Dude is a total man-child.

His critique may be right, but I'll wait to see what others say first before I decide.

Honestly, now I'm just salty. Total waste of 3 hours trying to get this controller to work. Reinstalled the game, tried so many fixes and nothing, $20 of nothing. Can't even play the way Heartmachine wants, FFS.

Controller works fine for me, but the game won't work on fullscreen. The screen freezes, but I can still hear the sound and it seems like it's playing just fine, other than the fact that the picture is locked. Seems to be a problem with Gamemaker games, had the same issue with Momodora and Rivals of Aether.

Plays great though

Has anyone been able to get the yellow upgrade collectible from the fire pit in the east? I was able to get all the way, but on the way back didn't have enough health packs so died. Oh well, I'm sure there are plenty more upgrade items in other areas. Off to the second boss (north).

Man, you really have to carefully consider your upgrades. What was the first upgrade you got?
I went for hitting back projectiles, charged attack, and more health. Next time, I'll go for the grenade.

It's the little details that can really make a game special. The way your cloak moves with each strike. The dust-throwing skid at the end of a multi-dash. Leaving pools of blood or snowy footprints in your wake.

Oh, yeah, the multi-dash is really useful. Very helpful to be able to flank behind ranged enemies

Dude WAIT.

They already acknowledged it publicly, just calm down and stop trying to fix it yourself, for your own good! There will probably be a patch by tomorrow.

I'm also having issue but I ain't about to spend 3 hours trying to find a solution. I waited like 2 years for the game, a couple more hours is not gonna kill me.

From playing the Preview so much, I felt really handicapped without it. I value so much in keeping a safe distance.

What did you go with?

OK got gamepad working via DS4, here's my process:

- Downloaded newest version of C++ Redistributable
- Restarted PC
- Closed Steam, UPlay, etc
- Started DS4Windows, clicked "hide DS4 controller"
- Started Steam, started game

No particular rhyme or reason to what I did, that's just what worked for me.

Anyone know where the save files for this game are stored? I can't find them. The game does not appear to have cloud save and I put over an hour into it at work today and was hoping to continue playing tonight at home.

Should be in the games folder. I forget the directory but just Google 'steam games folder'

Man this game feels so great to play.

The framerate is strange though. Usually 30 FPS is no bother for me but something is going when I move that blurs things and is quite dizzying / straining on the eyes.

Might just be tired though, had a late night and sometimes looking at a monitor bothers me.

The mouse and keyboard controls are kind of shitty. You have to aim the dash AND the sword attacks with the mouse. The little diamond that shows your mouse direction is impossible to see during battle and is the same color as the snow in the northern area.

The big problem is that you have to aim TOWARDS an enemy to sword attack and then aim AWAY to dash. It's totally convoluted.

Wow this world is a lot more open / exploratory than I expected.

I thought it would be sort of Dark Souls like but I'm feeling way more Fez / Link to the Past kinda thing here. I'm loving it.

Edit: just saw your post here:

Biggest hurdle so far: choosing Link over Fez as player name. :(

Guess I'm not the only thinking like that.

Hmm, looks like I've been bitten by the controller bug, my Xbox Elite controller doesn't work once the game gets to the menu. I've made sure everything is kosher in big picture mode, and of course the controller has zero issues with any other game, so this is pretty disappointing.

The odd thing is that the controller does appear to work in the game up until the menu. I can absolutely skip the splash screens with it. It's only once I actually am in the menu that it becomes unresponsive.

Nah, it's not just you. It's my only real complaint so far with this game.

The blur feels like when I play any Vita game. It's slightly unsettling, but I can get used to it after a while.

Man I'm loving the difficulty, the challenge is satisfying but very fair. I like it.

So is there any hidden penalty for death? It appears to just dump you at the most recent safe spot and take two blocks of HP.... that's all it's doing right?

Where is the die ds4 controller option? Can't find it.

That's from whatever the latest version of DS4Windows is, running on W10.

Good luck!

(Also to make that option work you have to activate it when no programs that use the controller are running, like Steam, Uplay, whatever. It will give you a warning if they are.)
