Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

I ended up waking up this morning with a migraine and calling off from work. Maxalt and a few hours of sleep and I'm feeling good.

Looks like I know what I'll be doing this afternoon!

Why the fuck do I need to aim both my sword slashes and dash with the mouse. Why not one with the mouse and the other with WASD? I've been dying basically because of this.

I'm playing the Mac version, and sometimes when I die, when I respawn everything on the screen is pitch black except for the main character and the enemies... meaning I can't see the room or any obstacles. Is this an intentional design choice or a bug? It's really frustrating.

EDIT: Alright, I'm thinking it's a bug. Sometimes while the game is still playing everything except the background disappears.

I've actually collected 8 already. Is there a way to spend them?

Yea, just north east from the house you start in

That chain dashing room in the ability shop is doing my absolute nut in. I've got up to 92 so far... I feel like putting my fist right through the screen

EDIT: Okay, got to 101... unlocked a second challenge, which from the looks of it is expecting me to get up to 500 chain dashes... *cries*

EDIT2: Actually, looks like it's about 1,000 chain dashes its expecting... great

EDIT3: It's 800... made it to 816, my fingers are absolutely ruined

Holy shit, yea not worth it for the costume. Thanks.

Okay, played a bit before work and WOW!

While I do wish this was 60fps, so far this is incredible. The sound design and music are phenomenal. The Feeling of isolation at the start is magnified so much from the music alone.

It looks a beautiful as it always has, so no surprises there. The controls are tight as responsive, the gunplay makes me want to try a mouse because aiming with the sticks always feels sloppy to me in any 2D game.

So far though, I am all smiles.

Yeah, besides the counterintuitive mouse controls (going to borrow a pad tomorrow, no doubt), the game is exactly what I wanted so far.

Just defeated the boss RPS is complaining about. Are visual novels all he plays? By no means I'm a good player, and I died a fucking lot to the boss, but... complaining about it is like complaining about your first castle in Super Mario World.

Grazed the comments and didn't see any mention of the Steam Controller. Anyone give it a shot yet? I will post impressions later if no one else does. Waiting on the download now!

I think the alternate costume gives you a different primary weapon tho. That's what the developer said on a Kickstarter update back when the campaign was still running.
It gives you a different blade, but from what I'm seeing it's nothing but a cosmetic skin

I can't get the controller options to work. The game even says that this is the preferred way to play. I'm using a DS4 with DS for Windows. There is even a PS4 controller option in the game but no way to SELECT it. All it will recognize in game is the touchpad as a mouse input. Any help?

I didn't get the game yet, so I can't give you a sure answer but did you try it with DS for Windows off?

I am using the exact same setup without issue, but have you tried not using DS4Windows? Try connecting via wired without DS4Windows running and see if it detects the pad. Also in the DS4Windows "Settings" tab, do you have "Hide DS4 controller" option checked? I usually always have that enabled to reduce the OS confusion.

Pretty sure the option in game to choose the DS4 is simply to change the button prompts on screen.

The difficulty critique from RPS is really worrying. I don't really have the time or energy to constantly retry bosses. Asking for a refund until they patch in an easy mode.

So the only way to get the soundtrack (and art book) right now is by buying the Deluxe Edition on the Humble Store? I'm actually a bit surprised that there isn't a game + OST bundle on Steam yet.

It's hard, but it's not THAT hard. And for the bosses, it's pretty quick to retry. I'm terrible at video games but after learning patterns and strategies, I was able to make it through.

This game is everything I hoped it would be.

Yup. I started a new game just so I could watch the opening sequence again.

The first sword swipe put a giant shit-eating grin on my face. The music. The art.

I'm very early on, obviously, but I get the feeling that this is going to be a special game.

Disasterpiece's soundtrack releases on Bandcamp April 10th, available for pre-order now.

BOOM. Thank you.

I fucking hate the boss battles.
I've been trying to kill the
Skeletton King or whatever it is in the west
for like an hour now. Haven't even gotten close. Am I missing something? Is there a trick?
I'm so close to putting this game in my backlog. It's beautiful and up till now it was fun but this is seriously frustrating.

According to the RPS comments there are many areas available so you can come back to that boss later.

Controllers are busted in general for a lot of people

Well I can't get the Steam Controller to work properly. Best I can do is get it to recognize the directional pad, but no joystick, no other buttons. Damn

...Have you played the game?

Also, anyone plan on listening to the OST prior to beating the game? I'm on the fence about that. April 10th should be enough time for me to clear it though.

The RPS article had me shaking my head almost the entire read.

I really don't want to drop the "git gud" comment, but man him complaining that the game was too hard really made want to.

Do you play and enjoy Souls games, Salt and Sanctuary, Bayonetta, DmC etc? These games are challenging sure, but if you don't get greedy, play patiently and understand the game mechanics then they are all able to be beaten. Same goes for this.

The RPS rant reminds me of the Salt and Sanctuary thread when someone was complaining about the difficulty of the game but just didn't take the time to understand the boss mechanics or the game systems and later recanted her statement.

Kyle Bosman talked about Bloodborne and it's game of year chances last year at The Game Awards. His comment was "while the game is great, I don't think it has much change for GotY because games journalists aren't very good at video games". While a hilarious comment, he isn't wrong.

Bottom line is Hyper Light Drifter is wonderful! Don't let one person complaining that the game is too hard turn you off.

I'm not good at videogames, I think. But I can still get on with a game if it grabs me. I loved Ninja Gaiden, Dark Souls 2, DmC, but some others I just walk away from when I hit a wall. Just because a game like Dark Souls grabs a lot of people doesn't mean it's not too hard for some others. You have to want to 'git gud.' If you don't care for Bloodborne you're not gonna persist. And if a game doesn't work for you, well then you have to be honest with the readers.

To be fair, you just named a lot of games that are widely considered difficult and said "this game is like those."

I'm not going to say HLD is punishing. Again, I'm bad at games and I've made good progress. But you have to think about what you're doing, you can't just waltz your way through it.

Secs tweeted about the problem with controller compatibility. They plan to add a beta branch to have people test is asap with a fix.

Yeah, I tried all the things you suggested. I'm getting pretty frustrated. I can't use a mouse for games due to a messed up right wrist so I really need to be able to use a controller. I guess I should get a refund before it's too late, which sucks because I've been wanting to play this forever.

Fixes will be on the way

I really want to listen to the OST... it was one of the main draws for me! HOWEVER! I think hearing everything naturally during the game may have a greater impact...

You're right. Perhaps it was unfair for me to say, but then I guess the game isn't for everyone.

The game is like Zelda or Secret of Mana but with combat that actually matters and has a challenge. You absolutely cannot expect to breeze through the HLD mindlessly swinging at baddies who roll over and die, but if you are patient and pay attention to patterns without getting greedy then it's perfectly fair and accessible.

Hell, if Jeff Green can beat Dark Souls 1/2 and he just beat Maria in Bloodborne, ANYONE can. His persistence is why I love him and he's terrible at the games. Sure, HLD may be tough and I can concede that it may not be for person who doesn't want a challenge, but people should really give it a shot. I can't wait to get home from work and jump right back in!

So the comment from the Kickstarter campaign is no longer acccurate?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1661802484/hyper-light-drifter/posts/626908?page=3

add $10 to your pledge (and make a note for us once the survey comes that you want the Alt Drifter) and you'll receive the alternate playable Drifter character unlocked from the start. This Drifter will have a different move set and primary weapon, as well as some shifts in the story and interactions with NPCs, plus the obvious entirely new set of animations for a main character. (Which is lot of work!) You'll be able to choose which character to play as at the start of the campaign. This Drifter will be available to all players down the road; what you get here is an early playable unlock.

Can anyone comment on keyboard and mouse vs controller? Is it recommended that I plug in a controller? If so can I use a dualshock 4?

I think it's a safe bet they will have the issue worked out ASAP.

Neither of my controllers are working. Spent 2 hours trying, man I'm crushed. I'm sad, waited almost 2 years to be beaten before I can even start the game properly.

Fuck...

Bro...

I feel you....

But I've waited 2.5 years for this. I can wait a few days for them to iron out the kinks.
