Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

Why can't I take Steam captions of this beautiful game? Does someone's F12 work?
Oh, not just me. Was having the same issue

I'm starting to become convinced that dashing in combat is just a total trap. I do much better just walking around. Every time I try to make shit fancy, I get my ass ruined.
Really? I find it very useful, especially against ranged enemies. You can dash behind them faster than they can turn to face you.

I'm just having a hard time because there are so few (or maybe no) i-frames. So I often just dash straight into projectiles, where as if I sit still for a second, there's only one variable changing, rather than two.

Glad to see the positive impressions.

I upgraded my pledge via the survey to get a PS4 version and I was still sent a Humble Bundle link. Hope my order isn't jacked up.

I'm pretty sure Walker said (in the comments) that he went East.
He should maybe put that in the main article. Just reaffirms my thoughts then, since the East boss has very clearly telegraphed attacks, not a great variety of them either, especially compared to the North boss whose attacks remain fairly consistent but have wildly varying patterns.

EDIT: Nope, checked the comments and he's given absolutely no indication of what boss it is that he's struggling against.

EDIT2: Okay, so it's the North boss. Eh, still think he's jumped the gun with an article like that instead of just calming down and learning that this isn't a hack and slash game.

I'm not really sure how upgrades work in this game. Are the NPCs teaching me moves or seeling me things. Admittedly, figuring it out is strangely compelling much like there is a lot of interpretation, but I'm a bit confused tbh.

Both. The gun and secondary weapon shops have weapons upgrade or other weapons, the sword and dash shops have new moves

Ah fuck me still 30fps huh.

Game maker locks you into a set frame rate at the beginning of a project, and you can't change it later. Also, lots of actions/animations (well, pretty much everything) are based on that frame rate, so it's easier to work with at 30 than 60.

I definitely agree, I'm just trying to explain the technical and time-based constraints behind it. And, uh, let you know that it would take a full-on port to get it running at 16.67ms frame-times.

Also, as I believe others have mentioned, it helps to use a frame limiting tool like RTSS.

I'm stuck in the east

Got 3 key fragments, I'm right on the place where I should get the 4th one but nothing, only greninja foes

So I noticed on my backer key page that I have a gift key I can use. Is this a key for the full game or the preview? If its the former then I'd like to send it to a friend.

Right after I posted I think I just figured out what the currency is and how to buy things. Lots of visual storytelling and signposting, it's kind of like Fez but in a more action tutorials like some of the things in Super Metroid.

Hmm, looks like I've been bitten by the controller bug, my Xbox Elite controller doesn't work once the game gets to the menu. I've made sure everything is kosher in big picture mode, and of course the controller has zero issues with any other game, so this is pretty disappointing.

The odd thing is that the controller does appear to work in the game up until the menu. I can absolutely skip the splash screens with it. It's only once I actually am in the menu that it becomes unresponsive.

Have you updated your controller via Xbox Accessories app?

Are there any health bar upgrades? (I saw there was
that increase number of "medkits" upgrade in town
but is there something that gives me more than five points?)

just woke up... so, safe to buy right? not another Slain? ;_;

Did you go through the door that required 3 fragments? It's located down some steps from the Warp Pad.

No.

No.

Yeah yeah I already did that

But actually it was just a bug
an enemy didn't appear when I was passing by like 3 times so the script didn't activate

Impressions here (and the slick artstyle) are just about to win me over.

Will a Buffalo Snes controller be sufficient, or would I need more buttons?

Full on port yes, you'll need to rewrite the game in c or c++.

Really great so far. Only complaint I have is I'm getting some significant frame drops in a few areas. Is anyone else? I'm running the game on a laptop with gtx870m and i7.

Also I saw that a bigish patch just dropped for it, wonder if it's just bug fixes or what.

hmm I can only move when I hold right bumper (which is supposed to be the special), is that intended?

anyone? :/

Man soooo many smart things in this game that really show a level of polish and play testing that is at a professional level:

- If you're full on medpaks but not health, picking up a medpak heals you automatically
- Your gun smartly and unobtrusively locks on in combat
- Returning to the town auto-heals you
- Your little dude pings you with a reminder to heal up

So many other small little details of the gameplay that I can't recall right now but it's really polished, I appreciate it.

I wish there was a deadzone option

it's very very small, and my left stick is a bit skewered to the left (like many 360 pads) so in combat I sometimes end up facing the wrong way

given that combat gets fucked up, this is a bit crucial

yay I fixed by...unplugging my fight stick. I guess it was interfering with something. Oh well, time to enjoy it...for 20 minutes before going to work >_>

Someone else fixed it by unplugging their HOTAS. It seems like the game has issues with multiple input drivers plugged in.

Definitely a tactical, patient feel to the combat. Don't take three swipes when two will do. If in doubt, evade. Split up groups of enemies.

FIrst enemy to kick my ass repeatedly (East)
little shop of horrors plant mouth things. Terrifying until you know their strengths and weaknesses, but then it's all pop-pop-pop, dash, run, wait, pop-pop-pop DEAD
. I hope the game is full of such satisfying challenges.

I wish the respawn was quicker. The challenging difficulty and the closely-space save points encourage experimentation and every second spent not trying again is a second wasted.

Okay, just beat the north boss. If he is really "done with the game" fighting that boss, then he really shouldn't be reviewing this game.

Sure it was challenging, but once you learn the patterns and know when to attack, it's not an unfair fight whatsoever. Challenging and cheap are two totally different things. Games like Boshy are cheap to be hard. HLD is definitely in the camp of challenging but fair.

So GG RPS. Unless you are just absolute garbo at video games, don't let the RPS article turn you off.

Just finished a two hour session with the game...wow. One of the best indie games I've played, probably the best one since I played Transistor in 2014. The visuals, music, and gameplay come together to form a very cohesive and engaging whole. It is also very smartly designed, the encounters have been tough thus far, but once you really get a handle on the mechanics you can navigate an entire room full of enemies without getting hit. I really enjoy how the upgrades can drastically change your play-style (
I really enjoy the hold down the button big sword attack
). I'm so glad I backed this forever ago, I pretty much forgot about it but now that it's here I'm really loving it.

weird that you said that. Before launching this game I thought "huh I never finished Transistor totally abandoned it"

dunno why I wasnt feeling it, certainly not like I was Bastion

Man the triple-dash upgrade kind of sucks. It's hard to pull off in the heat of things, and if you hit a wall while doing it, it knocks you prone. I only bought it because I thought it would let me cross longer gaps, but alas, it doesn't.

Definitely gonna pick up that slash-dash combo thing with my next batch of money, looks fun to cut a swath through a group of enemies.
