Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

weird that you said that. Before launching this game I thought "huh I never finished Transistor totally abandoned it"

dunno why I wasnt feeling it, certainly not like I was Bastion
Personally I think Transistor blows Bastion out of the water, and that's saying something because Bastion is really good. The depth of the combat system in that game, the way you can combine different abilities together to get awesome combinations, not to mention the interesting setting and the narration (much prefer the narration in Transistor to Bastion, he's an unreliable narrator and more of a character than the old man in Bastion).

I wouldn't necessarily say Transistor and HLD are similar though, except that they are both beautiful games with great music and a high level of polish. HLD reminds me a lot more of Fez or Titan Souls, though I think it's better than either of those from what I've played this far. Probably just suites my tastes better.

its interesting how the dash isnt a teleport "avoid damage" sorta thing

im so acostumed to it being that in most games, that I just dash through enemies and get hit

Man the triple-dash upgrade kind of sucks. It's hard to pull off in the heat of things, and if you hit a wall while doing it, it knocks you prone. I only bought it because I thought it would let me cross longer gaps, but alas, it doesn't.

Definitely gonna pick up that slash-dash combo thing with my next batch of money, looks fun to cut a swath through a group of enemies.

Try practicing in the shop. Got up to 209 consecutive dashes in 30 minutes.

yeah this is legit

so everyone went north first like the game apparently "tells" you to go? I went east cause I was following the dog in the village >_>

Wait, the
Bird Wizard
North boss is what some are having trouble on and what the RPS writer John Walker complained as being unfair?

I found that easier than the Toad cause all you gotta do is pay attention to the missing platforms:

It all comes down to how good your reflexes are. If you have worse than average reaction time, you will be totally wrecked by the cross-pattern attacks.

Because aside from the deep combat and great artwork everything else about that game was totally bland.

Hey everyone, I have a 2008 aluminum-body mac, upgraded the ram to 8gb and installed an SSD last year. I also updated to the most recent OSX. However, my graphics card is 256mb and it says 512 minimum recommended on the steam page. I was wondering if my computer will be able to run it decently based on the minimum requirements? I read that someone posted that there are no video and graphics options. It's only approximately $9.xx on the Mexico Steam so it wouldn't be a huge gamble but want to play this and have it run well.

I wish there were more "medpacks" spread around - I find myself intentionally dying instead of using the packs I have, because otherwise I'm stuck trying to complete the next, probably harder, section with 3 HP and no packs.

Also wow - are you supposed to do 100 dashes in a row for the challenge? I can't even get past 10!

It's 100 for the first challenge.

Then 800 for the next. Got 720, then 768, then ~500, then I said F-it and made an AHK macro.

Finished my first run. Took about 6 hours. Over-all pretty damn good.

I thought I scoured the game but I missed around 14 keys and 12 pink triangle keys. These things are hidden well.

Also, hit a bug on final boss. It caused me to lose 2 victories in a row. Basically, if you deal the killing blow during the boss'
tentacle/spine
attack, it'll cause the attack to stay on screen, keeping you from finishing the boss.

Yeah I'm getting massive slowdown in a few areas now, like the cube shifting stuff in the North. Not sure what's wrong, I'd try it on a different computer but it doesn't look like cloud syncing is working for this?

I've done the 100 and 800 dash challenges. What helped was just quickly alternating between hitting dash and weapon switch. Get into that rhythm and keep track of where you are, it's still horribly difficult.

Just started this but I can't take any screenshots with Steam...? Tried everything. Anyone know a workaround?

EDIT: guess not. Game just crashed and hard locked my system not 5 minutes in, haven't seen that in a while. I guess its got some bugs.

Easiest for me was to switch to mouse and keyboard.
Leave the cursor in a static spot and then simply press the space bar in time until you get to 800.

I definetly see the Dark Souls parallels specially with that first (north) boss fight

that boss fight's lesson ends up being "dont overuse the dash, chill out"

when he starts doing the platform thing in different patterns you realize that with the dash you mostly overshoot it, and end up right on one of the lit platforms and it fucks you

if you just walk, tho, and take it methodical, it works

very cool

Is there a renewable way to restock medicine? Going back to town just refills your health bar, and medicine seem to disappear for good once you pick it up.

why can't i get through
the purple door in the frog/east area? i beat the boss and got all 4 segments and found my way to the door that requires 4, but it won't let me though

Man this game is nice but its so damn choppy. I tried limiting the frames to 30fps but it only lasted for one session. After the game locked my system its now hovering at 27-28.5 frames and it looks terrible. Not a good impression tbh

Secrets. Need all 8 to get past that door.

Got a pad, I'm stuck aiming unless I hold the gun button. All the time. And I can't shoot.

Welp, KB+M it is.

I'm also stuck after defeating the north boss.
Went down the door for the last triangle, the blocks are gone. But there is a unavoidable line of moving rocks? What the hell?
Edit- Got it!

Why can't I take Steam captions of this beautiful game? Does someone's F12 work?
Not working here either.

I've found at least 2 or three well hidden in small gaps and corridors in the north area. Look around, I guess.

I don't understand. What's the right method of execution for the first dash upgrade? Doesn't matter if I spam the A button or try a rhythm, I can't do it consistently.
Thought it wanted me to do a triangle shape but that didn't help either.

Spamming does you no good. The first couple presses are longer in between but after that, they get a little faster and you just constantly press it.

This could just be placebo but I think it is a rhythm/tempo. The speed increases as your dash chain increases. Up to 8 dashes, I mean. After 8, the rhythm stays the same.

The first ~3 dashes need to be input at a slower rate, then once you reach beyond that the timing becomes uniform.

It's a bit difficult to get the hang of, and can screw you over in hectic battles.

is anyone having a problem with an xbone controller where you can't walk to move? i can dash, and i can turn in place, but i can't actually move my guy with the left stick. i tested out keyboard and i can move him... wat

It is incredible. The combat is amazing. Fluid, responsive, and punishing if you're not calm. The artwork, animation, and music are great. (The music is very atmospheric. It doesn't have catchy overworld tunes so that might turn people off.)

Some combat spoilers I guess?
You're also very limited at the beginning in terms of abilities and combat. All the abilities you had in the kickstarter/preview build are pretty much gone. You have your gun, sword, and basic dash. You can't even quickly chain dashes until you unlock it.

Also, not sure if anyone remembers but there is no English text in the game. Definitely take your time and pay attention to everything for the gameplay/mission. That includes the story as well.

Exactly. You start mashing buttons, you're dead. Facing a couple of enemies at a time is okay, but anymore and you definitely need to start luring them and somehow pick them off. And it's incredibly satisfying when you pull if off.

Progress: Two bosses in

Man this is making the wait for PS4/Vita versions sooo much harder haha

Really happy how well the game seems to have turned out. That gorgeous art deserves fantastic mechanics.

The
bird boss
in the North isn't really that hard. Remember slashing recharges your shots, so you can deliver near constant damage on it by shooting from a distance, slashing to recharge your gun, then jumping back to shoot some more,

alright i must be missing something or doing something wrong. i've tried out 2 controllers (steampad and xbox one) and neither of them allows me to move with the left stick... only dashing

I had the same problem and had to unplug my fightstick to fix it, do you have any other controller plugged in?
