I think people are just kind of scared of cute things, which is frankly rather silly!

I mean, I've touched on it before, but I think a lot of people view the pretty consistently gendered nature of all of this "cuteness" to be...suspicious? Like, I get that young girls and boys can be cute. So why is it pretty much just young girls? Across so much media, across so many (ostensibly) different genres, its always cuteness as embodied by young girls. I know there exists a (more Japan centered female market) that does enjoy cute young boys, but then with them why is it just boys? When something is that, hm, consistent it raises eyebrows.

With this thread growing larger than I expected I would again like to commend OP on providing a perspective with much more sincerity behind it than the majority of posters who just post apparently witty one-liners or overused reaction images in stead of actually engaging in the topic at hand. Arcadius' contribution, however weird and unfthomable it may be, is more important and coherent than any drive-by comment motiviated by being grossed out about "waifu culture" and the people that might not take fiction as litghtly as other people do.

Its not just young girls/boys

So if I'm understanding this correctly OP felt bad for judging a group of people based a mischaracterization they had about culture they either didn't or refused to understand. So OP decided to play some of those games and really ended up liking them and this thread is in part a lttp of persona 3 (great game btw) and an apology to those people judged in the past for liking something he didn't. That part I think I understand but I not sure I understand the part that talked about HolyBaikal. I never bumped into HB in any thread or at least didn't see their posts so I'm having a hard time understanding what was so special about their posts to you. Maybe if you could explain in more detail or link some posts of theirs that really effected you, I could understand better. From what I've seen, most people around here are pretty nice and those that aren't are dealt with by other posters or mods themselves so I'm having a hard time understand what it is exactly you mean by they were nicer and happy.

Thanks for taking the time to read my posts. You're understanding of a major aspect of my post is bang on correct.

For the HolyBaikal section, it's a bit hard for me to just quote posts I liked. Think of it more as, the HolyBaikal I got to know really resonated with me, so much so that it transcended into territories that I never could have imagined.

Most definitely cute.

OP, I just ordered Ar Tonelico 1/2 just because you're cool.

Not sure when I'll play them but as a Gust fan that already played most Atelier games and Ciel/Ar nosurge, I should enjoy them.

Like...okay, why is that cute? Can you explain what draws you to that?

The whole scene really. I know that "baka" is used in anime for like, uhm, I don't know how to explain it, but when a person uses baka it's typically in a certain tone that insinuates, just "look at me" like " I look at you" kind of thing. I might be off base here, but the way she says it is very funny, the high pitched and stuttering sound of it all is quite decisively, cute.

Neat! You'll definitely enjoy them if your a fan of Gust, for sure. Especially with your background of the other games.

Let it go...? I figured you would have left, ignored me and continued on with life.

Not a Frozen reference...

No, this thread is entertaining. And I wasn't even referring to you, but other posts made by members. I also can't help it that it's all anyone is talking about in GAF communities right now. The cycle of 15 minutes of fame GAF threads continue.

Is that really just it? What about the flusterdness, the embarrassment, the...demureness, for lack of a better term. Are those all part of why its cute?

Those add to it. Its a fun scene.
Blushing is cute whether male or female. A lot more female characters are given cute attributes in anime and I like the outfit and character designs but sometimes guy characters are adorable and I would totally hug them. Im well aware and so are others, that there is a darker side to the cuteness that fetishises it and thats pretty much tied into otaku fandom and the whole idea of what is moe to some people and whatnot. It cant be helped. but it also doesnt mean I cant enjoy the more innocent aspects of just someone acting cute and lifting my spirits after a bad day of work or whatnot. Life is pretty strenuous. We all need a break from it at times. This is my method. Its not hiding from the world. I love this world. I fully embrace the reality of it head on, but sometimes I want a goddamned break from it and anime is there.
Tonight I will go to work. I will spend 12 hours conversing with actual people in a heavily social, high pressure environment, then I will go home tomorrow morning and watch the cutest anime show I can find this week.

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Who the fuck cares if it's not how actual people act? It's anime. lmao
Holy shit you mean a kawaii desu girl wont act all tsundere to me in a public library and call me an idiot? Life is a lie.
I was under the assumption that slice of life=the depiction of everyday experiences that are supposed to be relatable to the audience. Not the total opposite. Sorry I don't consider blantant pandering to be cute.
Not sorry.

Well that was eye opening! My son goes on Google images to find pokemon to draw, will have to monitor that more now to make sure he don't stumble upon stuff like that as he is only 8
It's too late dude. By the time he's 15 he'll be holed up in his musky room, browsing furaffinity all day.

I don't think it's anywhere near Persona's excellence. There can be a large amount of text in the game, with many "skits", but the story isn't incredible. It's much more typical save the world kind of stuff, but it's a fun romp to play through. I certainly enjoyed it, but I'm not harsh on most games I play.

You know. Since you have rated Ar Tonelico highly in the thread and has clearly been such an influence on you, I will definitely try. Was nowhere on my to-play list.

Oh my lord. Dude, they're idealized nearly flawless and borderline creepy portrayals of the opposite gender envisioned by men. There are plenty of reasons to live in this world. Namely, actual interaction with the opposite and same gender, specifically your peers. Who are likely infinitely more interesting than what a middle aged man thinks that a teenager acts like. Who also can't talk back.

Completely false. One of my favorite series "To Heart" character designer is a women. Pic below:

ToHeartDVD1.jpg

Men and women both create anime characters, and we love them for it.

Anime characters are not flawless portrayals of real life people. Even if they are, what's wrong with that? We all need a hero or heroine in our life.

It's like when we were a kid we want Santa Claus to be real. And he is damn near flawless, as he gives us all the presents we want for free. We all love this guy right? And what's wrong with that? He also can't talk back to us just like anime characters but so what? We appreciate him and his stories all the same.

People in the real world just need to embrace some fantasy and wonderland in their life. If we all do, there would be no war, no hunger, no sadness in our planet. So try to be open minded and embrace some anime in your life.

But think about the medium it's being told through, now how it's being used? Slice of life is rather large, for instance Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro, or Whisper of the Heart can be slice of life, just as anime that use moe/cute girls or cute art styles to tell a story which may be relatable.

I fully admit it Arcadius, this entire thread has been a really enjoyable read. Hope that Holy will see this!

Glad you enjoyed it, appreciate the comment.

Well, Google's supposed to be better at filtering out sexual content (unless you specifically search for it), but I guess it's not that good with drawn art.

This thread made me have a dream about picking up Ar Tonelico on the PS2 from some weird gaming collector's store in some mall with over priced games. Sadly they didn't have the other game I was looking for Star Ocean: Till the end of time. It was probably for the best though because they wanted $60 for ar tonelico.

That's probably an OK price. AT and AT2 tend to be rather expensive. Although, AT2 is well the whatever price. Perfectly OK to skip the first game, in my opinion.

No word of a lie, up until fairly recently I thought "Moe Culture" was related to the Simpsons Moe Sizlack.

I haven't watched Anime since DBZ cell saga and Tenchi.

It's fucking anime.

It's okay if you don't like it, but others do and that's fine too.

Seriously, I find this thread super amusing.
