What is so superior about the Spinpoint F3 when compared to the WD Caviar Black? I was going to go with the Caviar Black because of the MaximumPC review... I guess they're not the standard like they used to be?

Yesterday I was going to buy a premade pc but after convincing here and from a AIM friend I went ahead and ordered parts. It's a better pc at a higher price. Hope it's able to play Saints Row The 3rd good enough when it's out.
Solid :)

They are great little heatsinks, arent they?
For $30 nothing beats it in price.

If I were to get a i5-2500k to probably overlock, and in consideration of:
Asus P8P67: Perfect for the majority of the people. The base model.
Asus P8P67 Pro: Choose this if you ever plan doing SLI or overclocking (think 4-4.5ghz)
Asus P8P67 Delux: Choose this ONLY if you intend on doing some serious overclocking (5ghz).
Where does P8P67-M PRO and P8H67-M EVO fall?

Pro single NIC, Evo dual NIC pretty much.

Image in OP with the comparison.

I would go with the GTX 460 1GB version if I were you. The 768 version is going to run into real performance problems soon

Nope. I see them on their online store tho. Why do they have them and not newegg?

Because of that flaw with SATA, everything is very slowly trickling back into stock everywhere. If you want one from Newegg, just have to wait.

I just read over MaximumPC and they are recommending WB Black 2TB. Samsung doesn't have anything speed wise comparably at that size.

I don't know if this is the best thread to post, or if I should make a new thread but..

I got my hands on some $1400 and I wanna buy a laptop to use for some light gaming and 3d modelling while I'm not at home. Ideally, I'd buy a MacBook Pro because the build quality seems quite good, and I definitely would love to try out the Mac OS, but for $1400 I can only get my hands on the 13" MBP so yeah.. screw it :p

I've checked out some of the Dell stuff and their XPS series seems quite good, but I've not read many reviews about them.

Also, I'm still not sure if I should go with a 15" or 17" screen. The 15" is better for portability reasons, but that seems about it. Playing and doing some light 3D modelling stuff on the 17" screen is quite more appealing, and I know I can find some backpacks that let you fit a 17" laptop and some extra stuff (like notebooks, one or two books, etc..).

I could use some overclocking advice as I've never done this before. I have a 2500k / P8P67 regular edition with stock cooler. At stock settings, my temperatures are around 36-38 C idle, in the high 60s running Prime95. My case interior is a mess right now so airflow is probably a factor.

I set the multiplier to 40, then ran Prime95. I had CPU voltage of 1.264 at 4.0 Ghz, but temps were reaching mid-80s after a few minutes so I decided to stop the test and seek advice.

What should I do next, drop the multiplier or the voltage? I don't really want to buy a gigantic 3rd party cooler and I'm amazed enough with the stock speeds, so if I end up with hardly any overclock at all, that'll be fine. However, I've read that people can reliably OC to 4 Ghz with stock cooler so I wonder if I'm doing something wrong.

If you're overclocking, you need an aftermarket heatsink. Check out the Coolermaster 212+. It's not gigantic, and it does an excellent job for the $.

You could choose not to be concerned about mid-80s temps under prime. That seems ok to me, and in real life you'll probably never get near that

Dem temps! Is it still on air? :O

Guys, what is the highest temp possible for a 480gtx?
I am reaching about 80C under heavy gaming with about 70% fan speed.

Those are some amazing low voltages and temps. Can you show them running Prime95? To make it easy, 15-30 min run will do.

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded my rig to an i7 3.4 sandy chip...8 gb ddr3, 7200 rpm 6gps tb hdd.

I was wondering if I should upgrade my gtx280 at this time.

I can't max out most fps at 1080p. Was wondering if I should just hold onto my current card, wait for the next gen or invest in something that would give me substancial fps gains.

Either ATI or NVIDIA is fine for me. I've had bad luck with handshaking to my plasma television so I wouldn't mind checking out an ATI card.

What's your budget?

According to Realtemp, my E8400 (@4Ghz) has a core that idles at 50C, and peaks around 75C when playing games, which seems crazy hot considering I have a Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme sitting on top of it. I'm going to try reseating the TRUE but don't have any thermal compound laying around, so what's hot these days, MX-4?

$300-400...anything $500+ never ended up being worth it to me.

I'm just wondering if I'd see noticeable gains enough to warrant the upgrade. My card is about 2-3 years old now and it looks like the gtx570 even runs cooler than my 280.

It has me tempted but I'm wondering if I should just hold off until the big November fps games come out and then upgrade to whatever is leading the way in GPU.

Arctic Silver 5 should be good enough. Maybe its your ambient temps?

Definitely 6950 flashed to 6970. No other choice at that price range.

They make raspberry? Badass. The only place nearby that sells Woodchuck is a grocery store and they only carry the amber and granny smith.

The raspberry is super smooth, even more so than amber. Lower alcohol content though, if you're planning to binge on it.

That's a pretty damned good price. I'd do it.

I'm just worried about the quality of the card. It seems that MSI is a good brand, but I can't find a single review or anything about it.

They're all pretty much the same.

The only one I watch out for is Zotac.

What about cooling? Is the reference 570 hot enough that I should worry about picking up an aftermarket cooler?

It really depends. The reference card really isn't that loud, but for me, it's the loudest component in my PC, as the rest of my case is extremely quiet (the loudest fan is running at 800RPM). At idle it's very quiet, so it's not a huge deal for me.

Errr, the GTX 460 768 is one of the best bang for buck GPUs right now, just not that model he has listed at that price. They should be more around the 120-130 price range.

Is superclocked ever worth it? I like the evga brand but is it really worth $20?

No. If you're going to spend the full $350, you get the 3 slot Asus. Superclocked means nothing. It's the same card. You can overclock it to those speeds yourself if you want. Go with the stock Asus or the 3 slot Asus.

I wish I wasn't so superficially tied to EVGA.

Any of you guys have any experience with what happens to the OS (Vista specifically) when you swap very similar parts in a PC?

I'm trying to figure out what to do about my wife's PC-
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R
GeForce 9600 GT

I'm currently on
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P
GeForce GTX 260

Do I take my parts and toss them into her PC, and then upgrade it to Win 7, or should I take my stuff + HDD and put it in her PC? I would really like to avoid having to reinstall anything in her computer in terms of settings/programs etc. I'm not sure if Vista will like my hardware although it's very similar. Thoughts?

Yeah, I doubt I'd hear it with the surround sound and everything going. Do you think it's worth the extra $75 to get the better cooler? The Asus removes the possibility for future SLI, though.
