Hi GAF.

I'm thinking on building a PC, focused on gaming.

The first thing I want to buy is the monitor. It might sound weird, but I can't buy the PC right now, as I need to sell my Mac before. I pretend to use this monitor with the PC and with the PS3, so I can buy it now and start using it.

Can you guys recomend me a monitor? I want it to be around 24-27 inches, with HDMI and DVI inputs, with as low input lag as possible and with not more than 1920x1200 of resolution.

I want to play in native resolution in the PC and in 1080p in the PS3 in 1:1 pixel ratio, so if the monitor has more than 1920x1080 pixels, it should not make any kind of scaling when connecting a 1080p signal trough the HDMI. I don't mind to have black bars.

I don't care about 3D, 120Hz or any fancy stuff. What can I find for, let's say, 200 euros?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what the price is in euros, but I literally just got the Asus VG23AH a few days ago. I didn't want to go up to 27" or 2560x1440 either. As a 1080p monitor for gaming, it seems pretty much perfect, and comes well regarded on gaf and elsewhere. Low input lag and response time, IPS, but not full matte, and with it in front of me, a really slick monitor. My pc doesn't arrive til tomorrow but I've had some good gmaing sessions on it with my 360 and ps3 already and it was great. Has 3d functionality, not really what you'd buy the monitor for, but it's there.

Hey chaps.

Pretty happy with my PC at the moment, except my processors starting to slow me down (I think). I currently have a i7 950, on a Rampage II extreme mobo. Is there anything I should be looking to upgrade toward, or would any upgrade for the moment be relatively pointless? Cheers in advance.

Overclocked it? If not do.

I've clocked it to 3.7, but I lose stability if I go much higher. It's only air cooled though.

4 is really as high as most of that gen go. Still a very capable CPU that, IB-E might be an upgrade option for you if you feel your system isn't giving what you need.

Alrigh guys, big question here, my 3570k has degraded from needing 1.272v to needing 1.288v for 4.5ghz. I have the intel tuning plan and they said I can use my 1 time free replacement. What are the chances I get a worse chip considering the CPU I had before that got fried by my Motherboard needed 1.356v for 4.4ghz? I know its all luck but statistically what are the chances?

OK that's all I really wanted to know. I'm not too worried right now, just wondering if there was an obvious route I should be going. If it's not holding me back, then fine. Thanks.

If one wanted to get a very quiet, good bang for buck nvidia gpu that is a worthwhile upgrade over a gtx 560ti, what would you suggest?

being quiet (I mean actually , not 50+ dB "quiet') is important and worth an extra 20-30 euros over a stock version.

Anything with more than one fan is quieter than reference design. However - GPUs have gotten a lot quieter in the last two generations. My 670 reference is waaaaaaay quieter than the 470, 570 and 6850 I've had.

EVGA ACX model is very quiet, the Gigabyte windforce is good too. GTX 760 is the current best bang for your buck card.

UK Gaf, in short, where would you say the best (read: cheapest) place is to go for a Gaming PC?
Do you want to build?

Depends. I've heard building is cheaper but I don't know if its worth the hassle.

It is worth it, buts no hassle!, check the builds in the OP. There are a list of shops to buy parts from too. Generally amazon is probably the best place to buy from because they are very easy to deal with if anything goes wrong with a part. For best prices you will need to shop around different shops.

As for difficulty in building. It seems hard at first, but read/watch some videos and you will see its just a matter of placing 5 or so parts to together.

Bro my i5 3570k that I bought a few weeks ago needs 1.35 for 4.6ghz and I consider my chip to be really good because my temps are great.

No problem.

Build build build.

Guess building is the way to go!

Amazon eh? I thought I'd have to go through one of the specialist sites. Nice surprise.

update : it works fine again .

I really wish Nvidia fixed this issue with ENB on their new drivers though.

oh word, thats a driver issue?

was about to look this up last night, have the lens flares going through mountains and shit on Skyrim.

I can live with it though. Once you deal with the pain of trying to unfuck Skyrim due to mods you'll deal with pretty much whatever so long as 98% of its good.

Something's definitely rolling around in the sound card's box. That doesn't bode well.

EDIT: Nevermind just a couple little screws.

Enjoy! Lots of quality bits there. Make sure to post a completed picture too, I love seeing people's finished projects.

So is Haswell worth getting just to get the new socket? I was planning on an Ivy Bridge build but I don't want to have a dead socket motherboard.

I don't believe so. The only upgrade option will be Broadwell in 2015 and it'll not be bringing all that much to the party performance wise. It'll shrink down to 14nm and you'll likely see a SB to IB level of performance increase. Moreover the rumours of Broadwell being BGA only haven't been refuted by Intel either.

If you're looking at something like an i7 it might be worth holding fire for the Ivy Bridge-E 4820K in about 4 weeks.

Woohooooo mission accomplished with the latest mod to my Silverstone Grandia GD08...............I have everything setup and the system has been running the last hour with no issues so far. I just need to figure out how I am going to power the rear 80mm fans, I have run out of motherboard fan connectors. Everything is pretty much setup on Y splitters with 2 fans to each fan header on the mobo.

My next project, to figure out how I can get some kind of fan controller in here, add a window on the top, and last but not least...........color that darn wood black. I'm also kicking an idea around of possibly drilling additional holes to the bottom of the chassis for either cable management or being able use twist ties for the cables that are under the motherboard.

The HDD's in the corner are about 31 and 34 degrees. I am going to probably mount a small fan in that area somehow.

Yes. it seems to be an issue with all the 320 driver versions.

Kind of annoying since i do want the stabilizing and performance gains that newer drivers bring .

Oh well ...

Hmm okay, I thought Broadwell was supposed to be a big deal. I guess I'll return my Haswell for an Ivy, I'm just going i5. The lack of ITX 1150 boards was annoying anyways.

It's a big deal in the fact they're managing to shrink down to 14nm, but there isn't all that much known about it. It's only a tick cycle though, Skylake will be the tock when it comes out.

Does anyone have recommendations for LGA2011 boards?
Do the ASrock x79 based broads have the same problems the z77 have?

And does anyone know of a good cheapish cooler for LGA2011?
Already have a Hyper212 + but it is not listed as supporting LGA2011 without an extra bracket that I can not find for sale.

I'm now needing a OC of +0.020v instead of the original 0.010v to get it stable, definitely think degradation is in play...

GAF not sure if this has been posted before...but might be helpful to put on the front page with the recommended monitors: http://isthisretina.com/

gives a good idea of what resolution to get for what viewing distance/screen size for that "Retina" effect!

So I tried plugging my GPU into the second PCI slot.

.... My PC will not turn on. I took it out, and tried again. Nothing. No fans. No sounds.

I don't know if I somehow fucked something up when I plugged in the card. I don't know if I messed up the motherboard. I don't know if I bent a pin.

I don't fucking know.

I am absolutely beyond depressed right now.

Are you sure that you have not pulled any cables out? (like the one going to the power button), and does your motherboard have a little standby light on itself? If it does, is it lit up?

You would not of bent a pin unless you started mucking around with your CPU.

The mobo has no light. The cables all appear to be connected. The PSU is on.

I went ahead and plugged my new monitor into my old PC to make me feel better. It helps a little.

Hi! First time posting in here and need your opinion. I want to build a cheap PC for art/game development production(3D modeling, photoshop, painter, and Unity). The price range is around 450-650ish. Have any recommendations on parts?

I haf a HAF912 and a H80i, however I intended to mount the H80i as intake in the rear and use a 200mm as exhaust at the top, now it seems like a 200mm will not fit. What should I do?

This may sound like a strange question, but how do you know it's slowing you down? It's still within striking range of a stock 'sweet spot' i5/i7 3xxx or 4xxx processor. Are you sure it's your CPU that's the bottleneck?

Greetings from my new build!

Intel i5 3.4 ghz, 8 GB ram, 256 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, and 4 GB vidcard all running wild and free. Im fucking dreaming. This thing is running Trine 2 in full detail with enough Chrome tabs open to choke lesser mortals. This was so so so worth it. and now more importantly I have learned how to build a functional computer!

Are mouses supposed to stutter a bit?

I don't know if it's just me, but I bought a new mouse pad and it still can't get rid of some stuttering when I move my mouse around in FPS or camera movements.

Maybe it's just me as I come from consoles and expect smooth camera movements.

Tried different mouse, the same thing.

No, there is supposed to be no stutter (or delay, or ANYTHING else) whatsoever.

Also have serious screen tearing that makes it look I'm running at 30FPS, when in reality, it's running super fast. Don't know if this is normal either, or my eyes are too sensitive for this.

Don't know what it is...

it's been like this for months.

What do you mean by stutter? Are you talking about skipping pixels when trying to make very small motions like in a sniping scenario or stuttering always during sweeping movements?

If it's an issue during small adjustments like in sniping situation, I typical increase the dpi setting (if your mouse supports it) and decrease in game sensitivity to your liking.

If it's during sweeping movements, it may be a framerate issue.

Enable vsync to eliminate tearing.

What are you playing and what are your specs?

Just in general, like the mouse skips a movement. Very subtle, but it's noticeable to me. Tried removing drivers and still doesn't help.

I can't enable V-sync as it gives me a lot of input lag, even with triple buffering. With the mouse being a bit jerky, it adds to that skipping effect. Using a G9x. I've even considered getting a 120/144hz monitor just to get rid of this framerate slow feel. This slow framerate feel is apart from the mouse issue. Hard to explain.

i5 3570k
GTX 670
8gb RAM

The mouse stutter is comparable to this. When moving with a keyboard, everything looks fine. Even using the camera with an Xbox 360 controller, it's smooth. I use a mouse, and this happens. It's much more tolerable and less noticeable than the video show here, but it is still there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQLt9AU7Mj4

Holy shit, no that's not normal.

Also, I use a G9x as well. That is not normal behavior. If your frame times are consistent your mouse movement should be smooth as silk.

If your dpi settings are very low and your in game sensitivity is very high you may get something like that I guess.
