After over 2 years of running my 2600k at 4.5ghz, this weekend I finally bumped it up to 4.6ghz. Just finished 24 hrs of prime 95 and then a few rounds of BF4.
I don't plan on upgrading this year so I might as well push my current setup a little more.

That's cool. How are you cooling and how are your temps looking...?

That looks like a pretty big case, seems like an h100i would not be a problem fitting in. Specs say a 120x2 or a 140x2 fits in the top. Here is a video of a guy putting one in that very case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiSwrvmD4ko

That looks pretty roomy up there. You should look into the new h105 maybe. Better performance. thicker rad.

Build looks OK to me. You are spending a good chunk of loot....maybe a bigger SSD. I ran through a 120GB Samsung pretty quickly, got tired of moving things around, and just recently popped for a bigger one.
You don't need a WD Black for storage. Go WD Blue or something else. Plus, the Blacks are kinda loud. Use the money saved for a ~256GB SSD.

Have you tried 4.8-5.0 GHz? .1GHz increase won't make that much difference.

Would recommend you go with Corsair Dominator Platinum RAM, an NZXT H440 for the case, if those suit your taste. Looks like you're going all-out, so figured I'd just put in those recommendations!

Great build. I'd also spring for the EVGA 780 Ti Classified if you ever plan to do a custom water cooling loop. Allows for much higher voltage and overclocking potential.

Some streaming, some gaming, gonna do some linuxing. In the future some potential number crunching but nothing too crazy.

Does anything just jump out to anyone who knows better than me, either with compatibility or something where I missed the mark completely or a clear bottleneck or anything really, or is this thing ready for prime time? I'm gonna probably throw a cheap hdd in their at some point, but I don't need that much space for right now. Same with the ram throw 2 more 4gigs in there.

The memory seems kind of iffy to me. Can you find a 1600 ram on sale? I see them on newegg for around the same price all the time.

Also do you have another hdd for storage? That ssd is going to fill up quixk

Edit: nvm missed that part. I definitely would find better ram. Easily on sale for less than that actually

Just look for 1600 then? Will I notice much if I go even further?

Edit just read the op spreadsheet. I'll look for some 1600 ram tomorrow morning, thanks!

My gut feeling is no. That is really low end. Not a good price at all. I didn't even know there was an 8570...that must have been some OEM thing. I really think you are going to be much better off with the budget build in the OP, or the next one up.

Don't worry about not knowing this stuff. You will learn, young padawan. None of us knew this stuff when we first started. The first computer I built was a 486dx when I was in high school, and I still learn new stuff in this thread all the time. Read, read, read, starting with the OP of this thread. Other sites, like Techreport.com, have great guides.
Watch youtube videos.

Geez, I can hardly remember that first computer. I think it had a 200MB (thats megabyte) hard drive and ran at 66mhz. I remember playing Aces of the Pacific and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis on it. Maybe the first X-Wing was on that box...or the next one. Getting old sucks.

I was wondering what you guys' opinion on couch(TV) vs desk(monitor) setups were? I've been playing on my TV while laying on the couch with Bluetooth kb/m. I went to a LAN party tonight, and I realized that its pretty inconvenient to play certain genres this way. Competitive FPS/MOBAs/MMOs aren't great to play far from a large tv while on the couch. FPS for the twitch reflexes, the other 2 because of so much text. Granted, for AAA games, laying down with a controller is the best option.

I'm debating buying a desk/chair/1440p monitor.

UK gaf, trying to get a tentative build for someone in the UK. Don't know the market at all. Started throwing one together but went overbudget.

Budget: 700 pounds
For gaming. Tower only, no parts reuse.
This is slightly over (as I include Windows in my lists) - could always get a different power supply though :)

Nice build! ASUS do a pretty good guide to overclocking here (it's for the Formula board but it will be almost identical for you).

Not really, no. Although I'd probably offer to buy the RAM off him separately to see what he'll sell that for - good 16GB memory is usually at least $125 new.

I'd probably change the RAM to this one myself (cheaper and faster) but otherwise it looks good. Don't forget Windows in your calculations.

32GB RAM yet only an average performing 128GB SSD? If you're spending that much on an i7/780Ti build, surely you can afford another £40 for at least a 250GB Evo?

Do you really need Windows 7 Ultimax Supreme Power One? Do you really need 32GB RAM? Why not get 8.1 from r/softwareswap for £10 in order to afford a bigger, better SSD and a better motherboard? I think the one you have there is distinctly middling for an otherwise high end Z87 build.

Hi guys, my parts are gonne come next week, but I can't get a video card until next month. My friend is giving me his old GTS 450 1GB for that time, and I'm wonering how capable that is for new games. Could I run games like Assassin's Creed 3/4 and Far Cry 3 with it (at lowest settings of course)? Or should I just forget those games until I get my 770?

Also, is the GTS 450 even better than the integrated GPU (4570k)?

You need to provide more info - first exact model of CPU, exact model of mainboard, what case and psu it has and what type of ram is there.

It might be not bad base for building you own pc depending on those components.

I'd be eternally grateful if someone is able to fix this problem.

Basically, my PC suffers a BSOD but only when I use certain applications. The majority of games I've installed work splendid for example:

Skyrim works 100%
World of Warcraft works 100%
Sleeping Dogs works 100%
Sonic Generations works 100%
Tomb Raider works 100%

My emulator to play PS2 games, PCSX2 works 100%
Benchmarking tools such as Heaven, Fumark and stress testing with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility all perfectly stable.

Windows 8.1 runs fine.

This is the part I'm pulling my hair out. Whenever I play Battlefield 4, Planetside 2 or run Cinebench to benchmark my GPU/CPU I get the dreaded BSOD.

My system Specs:
EVGA 780 Superclocked ACX
i5 4670k
Gigabyte G1.SNIPER Z87 Motherboard
Corsair CMY8GX3M2A1866C9 Vengeance Pro Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866Mhz CL9 XMP
XFX 850W Black Edition 80+ Gold Fully-Modular Power Supply
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD

So, does anyone know why my system is able to play some games perfectly, yet a select few will not run at all?

P.S. A few things to point out.
-The BSOD says machine_check_exception.
-My system is not over clocked although I have increased Vcore voltage to 1.2 as I thought it may have been set too low.

Firstly, I wouldn't fuck with vcore voltage because you think you know better than the VRM.
machine_check_exception is an unrecoverable hardware fault. You GPU is overclocked by the vendor, so it's higher binned than a standard 780 GPU. But it wouldn't be the first time that the clock was still too high for the GPU. I would lower the core clock by 100Mhz or so and see how the stability is.

I think I'm gonna finally overclock my machine. I haven't had a problem keeping a locked frame rate generally, but Ubisoft games are wrecking the trend.

I'm assuming I do this with both Nvidia Inspector and my BIOS but don't know what safe numbers are relative to my heatsink and PSU.

Here's what I have. I'll post it all in case it matters:

Intel Core i5 2500K
EVGA GeForce GTX 670 Superclocked+ 4GB
G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
Silverstone Strider Plus 600W ST60F-P
ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Motherboard
CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB HD103SJ
TP-Link TL-WN851ND 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Adapter
CoolerMaster HAF 912 Advanced

The dream is to run Watch Dogs on ultra at locked 30FPS.

Alright, that's good to know. The case manual said something about 230mm fan, and I know the H100i is 240mm, so that's why I was a bit concerned along how the top of the case is designed. Will look into the H105s, thank you.

Also originally had a 1TB Evo Pro SSD a friend recommended, but I was already stretching my budget of $2500 for the overall office(still need chair/desk) and decided I could take moving things around. May switch to the 256gb from the same line, but it may just be an upgrade I'll do in a year or two's time.

Your parts all look fine to me. Are you only looking to buy from certain suppliers? You could potentially fit a better motherboard, better RAM and an SSD by buying from different suppliers and using an mATX case for about a tenner more:

Not really, no. Although I'd probably offer to buy the RAM off him separately to see what he'll sell that for - good 16GB memory is usually at least $125 new.

thanks, ill let him know how much he will sell it to me.

You need to provide more info - first exact model of CPU, exact model of mainboard, what case and psu it has and what type of ram is there.

It might be not bad base for building you own pc depending on those components.

ill txt him see if he can give me the names for that. thanks

Your parts all look fine to me. Are you only looking to buy from certain suppliers? You could potentially fit a better motherboard, better RAM and an SSD by buying from different suppliers and using an mATX case for about a tenner more:

I do want to buy it all from one supplier as it is my first build. It will be easier to get customer support if any of my parts aren't working rather than chasing different stores with different customer services.
I would like to keep the case because when I upgrade to an ATX and K motherboard, the case is something I can keep throughout my entire PC building life. Isn't that ram high profile? I think I've seen it at the same price at my retailer.
My retailer will not be Amazon but the prices are pretty much the same.
But all the parts ok right? Nothing will be incompatible and building should be smooth?

This would be good, but there's no SSD - I'd save a little bit longer to get one ;)

The RAM isn't particularly high-profile (nor is it low-profile either) but it's good for the price. All your parts are compatible so there's no problem with it there. Any reason you're looking at a full ATX board? Usually you'd only go for one of them if you want a second graphics card as well as some other add-in cards like a sound or wireless card.

So, today I decided to get back into PC gaming. My ipad, WiiU and PS4 can't really satisfy my strategy urges.
But going into it slowly I have only ordered a white node 304. I'll pick up a seasonic G-650 soon and then wait for the new haswell-e and the next gen of GPU:s (or a cheap 770). Can't wait to put it all together!

Only problem is that I will need an OS, any good deals on Win 8 or 7?

Reddit software swap (Google it) and you can get W8 keys for about $20.

Seconded. I was going to make a build up, but this is just what the doctor ordered. I hate that case, but that is just a matter of opinion I guess. I think NZXT's lower priced case is much better and very classy looking. Although it is a matter of what looks you are into.

Been mulling over the same with a view to a monitor/tv combo. Reckon you get the best of both worlds then.

I realise my motherboard has one chassis fan header but I have a molex adapter which i will use to plug one of the fans directly into the psu.

Get a 1-2 Y adaptor for the 3 pin header. Fans running off the PSU will run at full speed all the time and be loud. Consider an mATX case considering its am mATX mothetboard.

All that plastic on the NZXT looks pretty tacky in real life imo.

Thanks for your input. I am thinking of the RAM upgrade, but I've grown so used to the Phantom 410 and played out how I'm going to install everything that I would like to stick with that.

Also, I'm going to have a stab at overclocking the 4770k after a few weeks. This is new territory to me. Never built a PC before, so I'm taking everything nice and easy and leaving the GPU well alone lol.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll swing for the £40 more expensive EVO then. The only reason I went 128GB is because from what I gather, people only use the SSD for the OS so they can turn on and boot in seconds, and then have a huge traditional HDD for everything else, so past the 20-something GB for Windows, I assumed the rest of the SSD went to waste. Unless people use it for other things, then I'm all ears!

Also, is this motherboard not that great? To be honest, I'm closely mirroring Tom's Hardware's $2400 build with some slight changes like the 780 SLI to a single 780ti, and more RAM of course.

Oh and I despise Windows 8. Not even going to baulk on that even the remotest. I want my Windows 7 lol.

I wouldn't take Tom's as my only source of advice. It's not that great a site.

Motherboard wise the UD3H is a better buy.

After posting about this TWO YEARS AGO lol.. I finally got around to getting the rest of the parts and the custom pieces needed for my new SFF build. I purchased a custom backplate and will remove the rivets from the case to attach it to the motherboard tray, dremeling out the HDD case making more room for a full sized Noctua cpu heatsink/fans, placing a icy dock in the 5.25 bay making room for 3 x3TB Hitachi HDD. I will have a lian li drive bay converted on the other side for my DVD-RW drive and SSD. Will purchase a Graphics card at a later date when I buy a 4k monitor.

I actually found building in the N200 easier than the Source 210, plus the front plastic on the 210 is kinda bad. But at this price range there's not too many good cases anyway, so many terrible sub $40 cases :(

I want to upgrade to windows 8.1 but I am slightly concerned about the reported mouse lag especially on high refresh rate monitors. Does anyone have experience using 8.1 on a 120Hz monitor? Do you notice jutter or lag in your mouse movement? There seems to be so much FUD out there around windows 8.1.

How is it not? All IT related questions one puts into Google shows nearly all the answers originating from that site.

Why is the UD3H better? I'm looking at the user ratings now, and it's rated way lower than the Extreme4.

Not showing a lack of appreciation for your advice btw, I just need reasoning as well.

Sure, but having a 250GB SSD would let you put the OS on there *and* all of your frequently used programs, they'll all benefit in terms of loading times being on the SSD. And it'll leave space for a couple of games that you can switch in and out, and your load times in those games will be awesome, which means a nicer experience = happier you.

Also, is this motherboard not that great? To be honest, I'm closely mirroring Tom's Hardware's $2400 build with some slight changes like the 780 SLI to a single 780ti, and more RAM of course.

The motherboard in of itself is fine and will do the job just fine for you - I just think that, if you're spending so much money on what is a really nice rig otherwise, you (or anyone else) should keep things balanced. It's a solid Z87 board, just nothing.. amazing.

Oh and I despise Windows 8. Not even going to baulk on that even the remotest. I want my Windows 7 lol.
Fair enough. But you should be able to find W7 on Reddit for cheap too. Think about it - if you saved ~£120 on your build by using a key from Reddit, you could pay for that 250GB SSD and get a really nice board like a Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H or something.

Also, as an aside, I think 32GB RAM is complete overkill unless you're a heavy video/picture/music editing person. If this build is just for gaming, 16GB is more than enough. That other 16GB is just going to waste. :p

And most of the answers are bollocks. It's a low quality site filled with, not to be unkind, a varied wide ranging base of knowledge in the forums. As to why they come up first in Google I don't know, I don't really get how Google ranks stuff like that.

The UD3H is a better built board with more premium components. They've a UK based RMA service too, and haven't lied in the past like ASRock did with the Z77 Extreme4 where they claimed certain things that weren't true.

As has already been said 32GB of RAM is crazy overkill. If you're just gaming then 8GB is all that's needed.

SSD wise 250GB is the sweet spot. Look to the Crucial M500 and the 840 Evo.

Look to Reddit for Windows.

Well... I already have the Windows 7 ;) It's in the build because it's just to show what'll be on there. But as for cost, it won't cost me a penny towards this build.

Will definitely heed the advice on the motherboard and will upgrade it then.

As for the RAM, before I drop it to 16GB, you mentioned video editing. If I wanted to make HD videos edited together from captured footage in future, would 16GB still be enough or should I keep it at 32GB?

Thanks again for the advice.

Ahh I see, mate. I'm new to all this myself so can't speak either way.

Damn, you've convinced me, like the above guy, to change motherboards then. Though he recommends the 4H, and you the 3H. Which one is it? :p

And yeah really thinking of dropping the RAM then. But as above, if I get into video editing now and again for captured footage, and want to make HD vids in Sony Vegas, should I still keep the 32GB? This would be once in a blue moon btw.

And yeah, definitely upgrading the SSD then. Cheers.

EDIT: Thinking of the 3H over the 4H. Only £10 between them, but I'm thinking of opting for the cheaper simply for aesthetics. It's blue, which will go along with the theme of my build, whereas the 4H has red all over it! lol

Depends whether you like the red or blue colour scheme. The UD4H is marginally better too, it's only £9 more or so.

RAM wise if you want to edit videos the odd time go for 16GB. £110 for 16GB http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00A772022/ or there is stuff in this build for a tad less.

The Dominator Platinum looks nicer but in my books it's not worth the extra unless you really, really, really love the look of it.

Well to be honest, I'll be taking all the pictures at first going ooooh ahhhh but after that I'll probably never look inside again lol.

I noticed your build has a lot of cheaper alternatives like the SSD and PSU in addition to the RAM.

Would there be a drop in quality from the SSD and PSU if I opted for those cheaper ones you put up?

Not much point going for the 840 Pro. Get the M500 that kharma recommended, or the 840 Evo if you decide you like the Samsung logo on the drive.
