My 3 year old Razer Naga is starting to wear out, middle mouse button not registering clicks like half the time. Is the Naga still the go to MMO mouse. Wouldn't mind getting something new, but has to be good for WoW.

Welp, after a couple of months of saving, spending, and building, I finally finished my build!

Such a nice looking case. Almost thinking about switching over to one.

Should I wait until Black Friday for deals on amazon? or what is the best time of the year for buying pc parts? Right now the i5 4690K is on $209 and I'm not sure if I should get it now, I also want an MSI R9 280x but they're quite expensive right now :/

Currently already have the i3. Pentium is coming but not until after we sell the car, move, and poop out the baby. I'm also trying to figure out how to get a Pentium from the states because I don't want to pay $100 for one.

I can help you out, they are $59.99 at Microcenter.

This is a really awkward time, because Nvidia's big reveal of the 900 series cards is next week, so it's possible that the 700 series is going to see major price drops to go along with the new cards.

Number 3. Oh god I'm tired.

oh damn, my hats off to you sir. lol

Just for a little perspective, I'm on No: 4, (12,7,5,4) although my youngest is life limited with severe difficulties. Tired doesn't even come close lol, more like zombie ships passing in the night, my wife & I.

Wouldn't change it for the world though :)

Good luck with No:3 Kennah, just remember to gets those nuts slapped with a couple of housebricks ASAP ;)

Lol yeah I think we're done after this one.

Was going to get my water cooling done before the birth but that isn't going to happen. Next time I'll tell y'all how I delivered my daughter.

Haha, my wife has quick babies, and although the midwifes were aware of this when we got to the delivery suite the midwife decided to make her wait before checking how far gone she was.

So she checks and my wife is 7cm, so off she pops to get the delivery pack, at this point my wife wants to push, next thing I know is I've caught my son in 2nd slip (cricket position) I hate to think what would of happened had I missed him.

Best thing about being a father IMO is being able to see your child come into this world, good luck dude ;)

Got the big one built, it booted straight into Windows from the SSD that had been in the Phenom PC. I decided to go with a fresh install anyway to avoid any driver issues.

I removed my 1TB storage drive to keep anything from happening to it during the install process, but now Windows won't detect it once I've reinstalled it.

It shows up in the BIOS, but not in Windows device manager. Any Ideas?

Edit: going to bed

hey all, managed to obtain one of them 24" Apple cinema displays which has a mini displayport connection. My current card (gtx 460) doesn't have such a port. Any card upgrade recommendations with a displayport that wont break the bank?

Honestly. I have the same setup but 27" and I just use an dislay port to mini display port adapter.

What ports do you have on your video card ?

Gtx 460 is probably just dvi and mini hdmi

To answer the original question, pretty much every card has display port now

CPU: Intel i7-4930K
Heatsink: CoolerMaster Hyper EVO 212
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X79
GPU: GeForce GTX 780 Ti
64GB of RAM
Case: Corsair Air 540
PSU: CoolerMaster V850
Storage: 1TB Samsung EVO 840 SSD

Sadly, haven't got to play much games due to my college's internet being as fast as a snail in a tortoise shell in hot tar, but been playing a lot of Mark of the Ninja and Strike Vector (which sadly suffers from a low player count).

I really like dual chamber designs. I'm thinking about buying the smaller Corsair Carbide Air 240 to replace my Silverstone SUGO SG09. What do you have under your desktop? I've been looking for something to put under my wife's desktop, that looks nice.

Hey folks,

Haven't posted in this thread yet, but when I first built my PC I was not a GAFer.
That build crapped out (I have yet to find the culprit, but most signs point toward the mobo, RIVF)
It was also an opportune time to upgrade, since I do almost entirely multithreaded media work, and the 5960x seems a beast, so I went full x99.

Here is my build:
computah_by_roderickartist-d7ypefy.png

I am annoyed by the dust in the ap181s, and also, for the astute, the graphics card is in the wrong slot. I fixed it promptly, no worries. I'm not sure how I did that.

Specs:
CPU - 5960x
RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws 32gb DDR4 2400mhz
MOBO - Asus x99 Deluxe
PSU - EVGA Supernova 850 G2
COOLER - Phanteks PH-TC14PE
-from before
GPU - GTX 690
CASE - Silverstone FT02
plus some white cables :)

Anyway, I've spent the day trying to get my overclock going nicely, and I'm a bit bummed.
First off, the phanteks ph-tc14pe cooler is a beast and it is doing a good job keeping the CPU cool. My highest temp while working on the OC has been 79°C. (and that's with all fans at ~75%. I don't mind noise and doing full when its necessary)

My target OC is 4.3ghz or even 4.4. This seemed reasonable.
I based my approach on this Anandtech article.

The problem is I seem to be getting a stable 4.3ghz, but at 1.309v. That seems way too power hungry. I have the LLC at level 9 (it was crashing with auto).
From that article, 4.4ghz at 1.3v is said to be 'below average' binning for the chip. Do I have a super poopy chip?

I only really know how to tinker with the ratio, voltage (i'm doing offset for sake of the downclocking/undervolting) and LLC (which I just put to a high level, I don't know much else).

I am hoping that this poor performance is due to ignorance on my part rather than a particularly inefficient chip.

So, any suggestions?

**The 4.3ghz at 1.3v crashed. What the heck :( Temps didn't go above 80°C
The Phanteks look so nice. I'm a sucker for black and white gear.

Thanks man. They're nifty coolers. They perform very well (better than the noctua dh-14 they replaced), and with the option to get them in practically any color, they are awesome. Having a FT02, I feel compelled to air cool everything.

As for my overclocking, I am somewhat confused. I have a stable 4.3, but I am baffled by the 1.36v. I'm not sure if this makes any sense, but is it possible for the BIOS to be treating the voltage as .1 volts over what is being delivered? When I was testing, I was only able to do 3.5 at 1.1v, which is also .1 volts above what it would seem it should be.

In any case, it is prime95 stable, with a max temp of 82°C and idle at 34°C, so I'm sticking with it. Cinema4d and after effects don't bump the temps up that high anyway.

Look what arrived (I love the "For your real needs", since no one really needs a case like this):

Sadly, I don't have the equipment (in terms of photography) to remotely show off how great it actually looks. It also feels really solid, thanks to the 2.5mm aluminum.

If I had to complain about anything, 2 screws (out of ~12) on the back were not fully tightened (they protruded by about half a mm), but that was easy enough to fix.

I also finalized the rest of my components;
1 Stk. 4A47784 - Intel - Core i7-5820K, 6x 3.30GHz, boxed ohne Kühler, S2011-3 (BX80648I75820K) EUR 352,46
1 Stk. 3A58315 - Corsair - CS Series Modular CS650M 650W Netzteil ATX 2.3 (CP-9020077-EU) EUR 81,36
1 Stk. 4A48254 - Asrock - X99 Extreme4, S. 2011-3, 8x DDR4, ATX Mainboard (X99 Extreme 4) EUR 224,46
1 Stk. 3A64306 - Thermalright - Macho 120 Rev. A CPU-Kühler (MACHO 120 REV. A) EUR 35,47
1 Stk. 4A45209 - Crucial - 16GB DDR4 KIT (4GBX4) 2133MT/S (CT4K4G4DFS8213) EUR 192,52
Decided to go with only 16GB of memory for now, and replace it with faster 32 GB some time down the line. Probably at the same time when I'm buing a 32Gbit M.2 1TB SSD and switching to Windows 9.

Neat. Also apparently Corsair has another PSU SKU. Please, no more.

Hope I get free video cards or money hats from nVidia's GAME24 event thing.

Are you using the latest CPUz to determine the load vcore?

Yes it's amazing cooler.

Not only it's one of 3 or 4 best ones when it comes to efficiency but it also has interesting colour variants and mouting it was suprisingly easy for something so big.

yup.

I might be able to creep down a bit off within that .06 volts over 1.3
It's surprisingly fine temps though, and 4.3 is what I wanted to hit.

:(

If your using offset voltages I would even worry about it, CPU will be sitting idle more than 100% loaded most the time I assume?

Check what it takes for 4.2ghz and 4.25ghz.

There is also intel tuning plan, chip replaced no questions asked once per 3 years.

Yes but you need to fry first one first and after replacement you won't have warranty anymore.

Probably just need to assign it a drive letter.

It's not in device or disk manager. I need it to be seen in order to assign a letter.

Well, for S&Gs I decided to try to boot from the drive, it obviously couldn't but when it defaulted back to the SSD it's seeing it now in Windows. At least it works...

So I need a new mouse and KB..what to get?

My only must have is the mouse having at min 7 buttons. Current has two on each side plus the standard 2+middle click.

You won't have warranty within 3 years if replaced, not really a big deal imo. Chips don't just die, they are the most resilient piece of electronics ive ever handled.

And you don't need to fry it, it's a no questions asked replacement, and even if they do ask you just give an excuse and they will replace. I know this since I worked at intel.

I plan on getting my cousin an i5-4690k which seems to come with a thermal paist pre applied to the heatsink. Should I stick with the stock or should I remove it and apply a higher quality thermal compound?

If using stock cooler then stick with the stock. If you're buying a better cooler it will come with paste

So the new PC is working well, one issue though, I have borrowed a netgear mini USB wireless device to get online working, it finds my router, I type in the password and it says unable to connect to network. Now the password is correct and I've restarted everything a few times, I'm not sure what else to do. Any suggestions?

Personally Haz, after that meeting you and I had with Intel at PAX, I've still got stacks of cash laying around from those money hats.

So I think it's time for me to start researching a build to put together. Anyone want to help me start on the motherboard? Can you recommend a good Z97 mobo that's friendly for overclock noobs with a solid BIOS?

OP should help you along your way. There's a lot of info there on where to start with builds based on a variety of budgets. Any questions or a full critique of your build can be posted after looking at that and people will be happy to chime in.

So, even though most of my games are located on my D drive, Steam is still on my C (my SSD), and so a few save files and such still go there.

My SSD drive is running out of room fast. I'm wondering if moving Steam will also cause those tetriary game files to move?

I just ordered a new case and CPU cooler to put the finishing touches on breathing new life into my ageing desktop. That said, "ageing desktop" is more than capable of playing most games at 1080p high-quality (Q9450, 750 Ti, 8GB RAM).

I figure with these changes it'll do me for another 6-12 months. Then I can potentially sell it on as a mid-range HTPC or whatever.

This been posted? About what I was expecting performance wise for the 970.

Galaxy GeForce GTX 970 Pictured, Specs Confirmed, Early Benchmarks Surface

  • GPU identified as "1C32"
  • 1,664 CUDA cores
  • 138 TMUs
  • 32 ROPs
  • 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface
  • 4 GB standard memory amount
  • 1051 MHz core, 1178 MHz GPU Boost, and 7012 MHz (GDDR5-effective) memory clocks
  • 224 GB/s memory bandwidth

Hmm. I was hoping for more horsepower if those specs are right. Not too bad though when you consider the 980 will likely be more powerful than a 780 Ti. I wonder how long it will take after the 970 drops for the 980/980 Ti to come out.

MSI and Asus BIOS are pretty OC friendly
I think ASUS makes things way overly complicated by putting all of the things you need to do in a variety of different areas for seemingly no reason. It's a big reason why I stopped using them for awhile. Gigabyte has the most logical placement for UEFI/BIOS settings, IMO.

Depends on where the save files are. If they're located in the My Documents/My Games area, then no they will not.
