Does anybody here know of any good internal wifi adapters for win 8.1? Surfing the net is fine but any sort of gaming or streaming and my wifi card can't handle it anymore. It USE to be good but for some reason the last few months it no longer seems to give consistent speeds.

Probably interference from a neighbor's wifi...

Any reason why you're getting such an expensive CPU heatsink/fan? Seems kinda pricey to me, but I guess if you're going for high overclocks it could make sense.
Probably not going for high overclocks, I mostly chose it because it seems effective and quite silent. I'd love some alternate suggestions though (this includes the rest of my configuration above).

What do guys think is better value for gaming a Z97 Sabertooth Mark 2 or a Z97-A? The Z97-A is $139 and the Sabertooth is $165 cheapest place to find it right now.

Does anyone know of a good small tool kit for pc building? Looking for things like a magnetic screw driver, a tool to pick up loose screws, etc

Possibly a noob question but... is it ok if I start buying my pc parts now (as deals start appearing) even though I won't build until late December? I wouldn't want anything to die just sitting in my closet for 2 1/2 months lol

I wouldn't do that at all. What happens if you end up getting parts that are bad lemons? You'd end up losing your store warranty and going through long RMA processes through the manufacturer. I would buy them all at once unless you know you're going to buy the rest like a few days later. I would never spread out buying PC parts unless you can use them immediately. On building a rig from the ground up...no. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback and answers guys!!. Decided to return my 4790k and trade it in for a 5820k.

When all the dust is settled its 350 more but I get the Asus X99 deluxe mobo and 16 gigs of DDR4 G. Skill ram I get to keep when I upgrade to Skylake etc.

Darn amazon is great for returns :)!

Skylake-E is a long, long way off and might not even use the same socket. This build will last you ages regardless.

In Canada

I really want to get a Desktop PC for under $ 1000 that's better than the next gen consoles...

I am STRUGGLING to find any decent deals after scouring the net for days.

It looks you need something like $1300(including taxes) to get anything remotely decent.

Can you guys point me to the right direction ? Everyone says you can destroy the PS4/XB1 with 700$...I find that impossible.

EDIT : I want to include prebuilt and build your self ideas.

Canada sucks. 1300 is about right to be the same as the 1000 build in the op. But if you're not against used, deals can be found.

Alright, took the plunge and started getting all the parts except the extra harddrive and the graphics card which can wait. Processor and SSD haven't arrived yet so just getting everything hooked up and cables tidied for now.

I decided to spray paint the replacement grill white to better match the case, wanted to use the grill instead of the plate to keep down the PC temperature better. Came out very well

Hopefully get all the parts monday, trying not to get excited as something has to go wrong. :D

Meanwhile been looking at the recommended use of the thermal paste, some exciting stuff. Haha Anyway going for the cross method based on results and ease. Not looking forward to the cpu cooler install though, fuck me that thing is huge.

Ready to pull the trigger on a 970. Which one would you guys go with? I'm leaning towards MSI when it comes back in Stock.

MSI and gigabyte are the most popular. They have great coolers and a good stock overclock. The gigabyte edges out the MSI in cooling though but it's also more expensive and a lot bigger of a card.

The Asus is no slouch either though. It is probably the quietest and despite having the lowest factory over clock, my personal asus has a lot of headroom for over clocking. I haven't even broken 50% fan usage yet either. Its also the cheapest in US stores at least.

Really it's hard to go wrong with any of them. Even the evga despite getting a little flack for its power setup and off center cooling pipes is a fine card. Evga has the highest factory overclock as well if you have no intentions of tweaking it yourself.

I went with the first one to come back in stock of the MSI, Asus and gigabyte. It happened to be the Asus and I am more than happy with it.

Guys I need some help...

I have a i5 2500k with this mobo ASUS P8P67. Back in the day when I purchased them I also bought this RAM G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-17000CL9D-4GBXL which I did not use because I think it was either the frequency or the voltage (I think it was the voltage 1.6v) that had a high risk or incompatibility with the mobo/processor, in the end I purchased and used these instead Corsair Vengeance 8GB CML8GX3M2A1600C9.

Just today I found the old Ripjaws sticks that I never used and wondered if it would be safe to use them with the Corsair ones? I still have 2 RAM slots left in the mobo.

Also, If this is possible without any risks or incompatibility issues with the system do I need to make any special changes in the bios? Like lower the voltage to 1.5V or downclock the frequency, etc?

Ok. I went with Gigabyte simply for the cooling. I ordered it off Amazon even though it's currently out of stock. Hopefully it comes back in stock soon. Thanks.

I need a really good wireless keyboard and mouse combo that will function solidly from around 15ft distance, possibly behind a door as I'll be storing my PC in my huge wardrobe. The door is optional if you think it just wouldn't work, I can keep it open if needed. I'm real skeptical of advertised distances on these things as I've never owned a combo that gets anywhere near reaching the distances they advertise. Anybody know of anything proven to work great at a longer range?

Or alternatively, a workaround for my current (average) Microsoft 3000 combi? I've read a USB extender would work, but trouble is I've also read it wont. Its hard to know what to believe!

Any help hugely appreciated. Redecorating, trying real hard to save space!

I'm curious, is it safe to just crank the voltage on a GTX 980 to +87 (max)? I've seen people doing this with overclocks, and achieving some huge numbers. I haven't messed around with over-volting, so it's a scary thing for me. Lol

I'm building a general computing rig for my mom and wanted to double check that this is legit.

Do I need the CM Hyper 212 EVO?
Do I need to buy thermal paste?

So I'm thinking about setting up Raid 0 with two Crucial MX100 SSD's at 256GB per drive.

I've never done Raid 0 so was wondering; other than potentially doubling the risk of failure, are their any disadvantages? Does it put more wear on the drives? Is their a better method? Any advice or hints?

The way I see it is I'd rather have the convenience of a single C drive at nearly 512GB than a C & E drive at 256GB apiece... All my important documents are backed up to a cloud storage service so the only thing I'd loose is gaming data which I don't care about.

I'm tempted to go ahead and order my parts despite the 980 being out of stock but man, when you have an estimated date of 1-2 months shipping it kinda makes you not want to...

I guess I could use integrated or just pull the GPU out of this PC and use it but eh...doesn't seem worth it because I'll miss on deals if I do that. AMD not releasing anything this year is creating way too much demand.

BTW, what do you guys think about those rumors about 980 8GB VRAM cards coming soon? Probably a 2015 thing?

Sounds like I'm glad I went with EVGA, as they have their step up program, and that's what I'd do if it came out this year.

Want to upgrade from my SAPPHIRE 2GB 7870 XT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202024). I have had multiple people recommend a jump to a GTX 970. What do you guys think? And is the Strix GTX 970 recommended (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121899)?

Notes: I have a 3570k CPU and a HX750i PSU

Yeah, I think the 970 would be a nice upgrade for you. And based on what I have been reading around, the Strix is a great choice.

Must... Resist... CORSAIR air 540 available for $80 locally...

Wow. Good deal. Don't resist. I have enjoyed mine.

Pros: Makes you an instant cable management genius with that big back chamber.
Looks
Airflow (Its very open)

Cons: Very wide if you are keeping it on a desk or something
Dust (Its very open)
Flat top attracts sleepy kitty cats

no to both, you can use the stock cooler (which comes with thermal paste already applied). you only need aftermarket cooling for overclocking.

i have an air 540 as well and it's highly recommended. i would add one con is that there is no filter for the side psu vent.

No you won't need either. Just use the stock cooler and stock paste. You should probably get a H81/H87/H97 board to save money since you're not overclocking, go 2x4GB for your RAM for dual channel, and upgrade to the 256GB MX100.

I recently got a 5820k, and I tried to overclock it to 4.4GHz. I tried voltage 1.350, and it did not boot. The only stable overclock that I have been able to get is 4.0 at 1.250 voltage. Do you guys think that my CPU is busted? If so, would you recommend replacing it with another one?

Need more info:

What is the rest of your rig? Mobo/PSU/Ram...? Cooling...?
Are you following any particular guide on how to OC that part...?

What cooler are you running...? This is very important...!! Do you have aftermarket cooling on it...?

You should not just jump in and throw it up to higher voltages like 1.35 right away. I am not a Haswell-E owner, but I can tell you that you need to be slow and methodical to OC a chip.

I just did a quick look, and there are not a lot of full guides around yet for that setup. It is pretty new to the market. I suggest you go to the owners thread for that chip at Overclock.net, try to learn about it...and ask questions there. The people there are real experts in this stuff.

Thank you for the website! I have h100i liquid cooler on it. I tried 1.300, 1.320, and I even lowered the GHz requirement to 4.2GHz. Nothing works for it. The only one that works is 4.0 :/.
