Would I lose video quality or have more input lag if I were to use an hdmi switch? My TV (which I plan to use as my PC monitor) wont have enough hdmi ports for all my devices and I would rather not be constantly plugging in and unplugging cables.

Dont know whats going on but i cant install the new geforce experience 2.1.3. It keeps failing trying to download .net framework. Tried updating through the program and downloading the installer directly. Tried running as admin etc. Have windows 7. It says i have .net 4.5 framework installed.

Any ideas?
I actually had the same problem when I switched out my ancient Asus GTS450 for an Asus GTX560Ti earlier today. In fact any and all installation, update and uninstallation options were completely broken, so I couldn't update my drivers from version 267.85. Had to download Wagnard Tools Display Driver Uninstaller to clean my PC of all Nvidia stuff in order to get things up to date. Haven't had the guts to re-install Geforce Experience, but everything else worked fine afterwards.

So i just bought and installed a Bluray drive for my pc. Does anyone know of a bluray decrpytion software that is free? As it is right now I cant watch any of my bluray movies on the drive without using DVDFab but my trial only lasts till october 31st. Seems silly that I have to buy a $60 software to use my $80 drive.
And that's why I skipped the bluray drive. Ridiculous shit, that is.

I *think* you can get VLC to play blurays for free, but I'm not 100% sure.

but I am taking tiny steps forward
Quick question: Seagate Barracuda HDDs (2TB in particular), yes or no?
I'm thinking about buying one for $50 that has been used for one month.

You can, but keeping your AACS keys up to date is nigh impossible.

Just buy the software if you're serious about watching Blurays on your computer.

I have 780 thinking of buying another 780 for SLI for $300
Worth it? Or save money and wait for the next nvidia card
Look at benchmarks. If the performance is worth it to you, and you have no interest in a 970, have fun.

What games and resolution are you playing at? I run at 4k and couldn't get by without SLi. At 1440p you don't need SLi unless you are running at a high refresh rate.

Why do "gaming products" have to be so damn cheesy sometimes. For example, Corsair having the tribal symbol on their new RGB keyboards. Holy hell, it just ruins it for me. I guess I could cover it up somehow.

Are you talking about the K70? The logo bothers you that much? Its pretty small...

Just future proofing and i might try 4k later on
Not really 970 i wanna get but the card next year

I would said wait it out, I am in the same situation with a 290x and I am just waiting for some big cards with 6-8 gigs of ram and some rather impressive benchmarks... then i ll sell my 290x for one of those :)!

Wow, I just did more research and the 2600K I've got still kicks ass. Very little gaming benefit to upgrading my CPU at this point. What the hell has Intel been doing the last 3 years?

GPU + PSU cable question.

The EVGA Supernova 850W G2 I bought comes with PCI-E cables that terminate in 6pin + 6+2 pin.

When I receive my 980, it will require 2x8pin connectors. Can I use the 6+2, and then convert the remaining 6 pin to an 8 pin using the adapter that comes with the video card? Or is that too much to run off of one cable and I should run a second cable to it?

Lack of competition from AMD, plus consoles have pretty weak CPU's so devs don't really push them much. And the CPU has pretty much always been less important than the GPU for gaming, so to an extent its not surprising anyway.

Yeah. I have a nicely over clocked 2500k. I have no desire to upgrade yet. Waiting for a solid gaming CPU game changer.

Working on efficiency and onboard gpu. Pretty cool actually. The break in the clock speed was have really moved a lot of other areas forward.

Thank you for this thread and PC Part Picker, I recently completed a new Bitfenix Prodigy build to replace my aging Athlon II x2 630, which I've had since 2009.

My requirements were a fast processor, SSD, quiet running, and modern parts with room to overclock and maybe upgrade in the future.

Bitfenix Prodigy, white
Intel Core i5-4690k
ASRock Z97M ITX/AC
G. Skill Ares 8gb 1866mhz RAM
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Samsung 840 EVO 250gb (I know there's a bug with it right now but the fix is only a few days away)
Corsair CS550 modular power supply
Windows 8.1 64 bit
An old Western Digital 2tb HDD from the old PC for personal files
Radeon 7770 HD from the old PC, will upgrade in time for Witcher 3

I much prefer the original Prodigy case, the layout makes a lot more sense than the Prodigy M, which looks like they tried to cram in an MATX board into the chassis, the power supply is in a really awkward position which really screws up airflow.

The change is absolutely huge, even without a new video card (currently a Radeon 7770 from the old PC). Programs that took forever to load are so fast now, and it's really nice having quieter parts. I'm never using a stock CPU cooler ever again.

I only need to get a fan splitter, the motherboard only has one chassis header.

Next step is to upgrade the graphics card and I also want to get an IPS monitor with more inputs so I can plug in my PS4 without having to swap cables all the time.

Copying 1.5tb of backups sure takes a long time over network. Rebuilding my i3 nas into a gaming/media machine. Osx for now I think, but might see if my windows install on my SSD takes.

So I was going through my newegg order history to see just how old my computer is(4 years next month, wowww). Was wondering if I messed up and bottle necked my self when I replaced my 460 with a 670, processor is a 875k not overclocked(i know i know) on the LGA 1156 intel board. Also, what's the ETA on the new motherboards? Need to know because I plan on building a completely new computer next year and don't want to buy before they phase the old ones out.

edit: Oops, forgot to mention i'm looking to replace one of my case fans(one broke). Case is the Antec P183

If you're waiting just get what comes out next year. The 670 is still decent and would carry over to another build

I'm currently rocking a PNY NVIDIA GeForce GTX770 2GB, and I'm tempted to upgrade. Would it be more worthwhile to get a second 770 and SLI, or upgrade to a 970?

The Steam equivalent of the drunk friend who keeps offering to pay your tab all night.
so my new rig is going back tomorow to the dude that put it together because Ive had it for 2 days and noticed its getting really hot acording to Core Temp program thing.

I noticed a faint "hot" smell after playing / streaming Alien Isolation for about 2 hours, like that smell when you use a hair drier, I checked Core Temp and it said cpu was around 80ºC

Today I played / streamed Dead Rising 3 for about 30 minutes and temp was at 90ºC so something is deffinately wrong.

I talked to the dude that sold / assembled it (long time friend who owns a store, he knows his stuff usually, never had complaints nor did any of the peeps I know that go to him) to ask i it could be thermal paste, and he assures me he put enough. He wonders if it could be the cooler being loose, maybe in transit or something. Or something is just downright borked, either way, im taking it to him later when I get off work to see whats up

its a i5 4690k, 16gb ram and a single (for now) gtx970

Dunno if this is the right place to ask, but I'm in need of a little help.

My current PC specs are:
Inten Pentium G860 CPU
4 GB RAM
P8H61-M LE/CSM R2.0 (LGA1155) Motherboard
1023MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 SE

I've noticed my graphics card has been lacking in certain games as of late so I'd like to upgrade before christmas. However, I'm not sure if I'll need to upgrade my motherboard or anything else along with it. If possible I would like to keep everything but graphics card and maybe RAM. My monitor is 1440 x 900 (ASUS VW199, 60hz).

In terms of price I'd like something in a $300-$400 range if possible? Just something more stable would be nice, I've had a lot of lag and framerate drops (assumed, I don't have any way of telling but it visibly goes from very smooth to choppy and gross) in games like Bioshock Infinite.

I dunno if anyone follows the TastyPC channel on YouTube but in her latest video she has a pretty cool setup with passive cooling to where the PC is silent when idle or just doing casual stuff like web browsing and the fans only kick on during demanding things like gaming, here is the video for reference:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUg4zICscF0

but anyways I would love to have a setup like this because fan noise is annoying as hell to me when im just doing casual stuff, only I want to do it in a Corsair 250D case.

As of right now I'm leaning towards these components:

Core i7 4790K CPU
ASUS MAXIMUS VII IMPACT Mini-ITX Motherboard
Either Geforce 970 or 980 (I know the 970 is a much better value but I want something that can handle 1440p without a problem so I'm not sure which one to get yet)
16GB low profile corsair vengeance RAM (already have)
1TB Samsung Evo SDD (already have)
Corsair RM650 (I believe these are already designed to only use the fan when necessary)

Any recommendations on what CPU coolers / case fans or anything else to get to be able to pull this off?

I have the 290x and its about 10-15 slower and not everything runs great at 1440p. Some games like crysis 3, shadows of mordor and Dead rising 3 really struggle a high resolution so I doubt its much different with the 980. You'll get 30-50 fps but not a steady 60

Trying to plan for my next mega-upgrade. I've been looking at either an Intel i5 or AMD 8350. However I'm very tempted to go with AMD again, as I've only had my Mobo for a year or so (ASRock 970 Extreme 3), and has the specs to deal with a decent SSD and RAM (SATA3 6 G/bs and Ram speed of 2100), so would be one less thing to upgrade...

I've heard the FX8350 does a decent job, should I go with that one, or pay a tad extra for the FX9370?

Or should I bit the bullet and finally go Intel? I've always had an AMD, mainly because of price.

Has EVGA released the GTX 970 FTW (04G-P4-2978-KR), or plan on a GTX 980 FTW? Reviews of the 970 FTW are good, but I can't find it anywhere. Also, what's up with the big price hike ($620) on the GTX 980 SC Reference? At this point I might just wait for the 6-8gb version or the Maxwell Ti/Titan.

Awesome. Have to try this later with SLI Titans. I knew Nvidia was being an ass limiting it to 970/980 cards.

If gaming is your concern, go Intel. AMD hasn't been competive for many years.

I got a challenge, or more like a request: I guess using that site (http://pcpartpicker.com), make a rig that can play most if not all play games at maximum settings (because I don't see the point in PC Gaming otherwise) for a fair price. Say, between $1000-$2000? Can that be done or close to it? I'm really curious.

Hell, I heard a Youtuber named TotalBiscuit uses an amazing rig, what's his specs? XD

You heard wrong. Go Intel, either a 4670K or a 4690K and don't look back.

AMD are years behind Intel.

I regret selling my 780 completely now. :( I miss my buddy, the 780... didn't whine like both 970s I've tried.

What made you change?

Not sure if he needs the cooler. The stock fan with the CPU should be fine.
If he isn't overclocking he won't need the 'k' version of the CPU either.
It'd be a little cheaper

So the new PC is up and running. Very straight forward build and oh my, so quick.
The SSD makes a massive difference to load and install times of everything.

The new Opera on a fresh install was like Lightning, it was almost instant loading every page.
Shame it had weird handling of bookmarks which made me role back to an earlier version for now.

Not tried any games yet but not expecting any major improvement as I've just put a 5770 from my media pc in to replace the 8800gts.
