Current PC:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.2GHz
Radeon 6870 2GB
4GB ram

So upgrading to a GTX 760 2GB should last a good while?

The Evil Within just made me realize my card was 4 years old lol.
The 760 is nearly a year and a half old I think? Unfortunately the 960 seems to have been pushed back till next year, so either wait for that or save some more and get a 970. Failing that you could get a R9 280X or R9290?

give me more info. The 280 / 290 deals right now are extremely good and you get 3 or 4GB of VRAM to work with as well if you dont mind going AMD again.

Also the Phenom II will start to be a liability as time goes on

I dont mind going AMD again, just thought about Nvidia since there were Radeon problems with a good deal of console ports early on. Now it doesnt seem as bad though.

I'm thinking I can stretch out the Phenom just awhile longer since it doesnt seem to be too detrimental yet. I mostly just play mutiplatform releases. I'll keep an eye on the R9 280 though.

I like a lot of what the S340 brings to the table at $70... I guess I'll just make a note about it only holding two regular 3.5" HDDs

You aren't going to get a better price than the one I linked above for a long time imo

5 years for me.

So yeah, my GTX260 has reached it's limit in what games can play in finding out that the Evil Within really wants a DirectX 11 card. I was planning on upgrading based on the hopeful rumor that those 8GBVRAM versions of those 900 cards be true and be released before Witcher 3 but now I'm in a delima where 350 is too steep at the moment and I don't want to wait too long to play this game. Been thinking of just going around town today to find the cheapest DX11 card (since it'll probably still be more powerful then what I got) and use that until February.

well guys, time to get a GTX 970, now I have to decide: EVGA, MSI, Gigabyte or ASUS

I've heard..
... MSI suffers from coil whine
... EVGA has some kind of issue with the heatsinks, which seem to be not aligned with the chips
... ASUS and Gigabyte, worse performance than the other two options

Uh, the Gigabyte G1 gaming has the best out of the box performance, maybe tied with the MSI. All manufacturer's cards have had issues with coil whine.

They all can have coil whine, the EVGA cooler thing isn't _that_ big a deal (The Precision X 15 fiasco is more of a reason to not go them imo)
Haven't heard anything about worse performance unless you mean like 26Mhz on stock clocks or something.

Buy what's in stock. Personally I'd gamble the GB cards IF THEY FIT (12"+) or go ASUS or MSI for their transferable warranties.

Be aware that the Gigabyte cards have three fans and a really insane minimum idle speed (1,600 RPM). That idle speed is way too high and adds to system noise in an obvious way.

Despite the amazing cooling and overclocking performance, its a purchase I regret because its anything but quiet when idle. I don't get what Gigabyte was thinking with the fan speeds because 1,600 RPM is enough to cool the card overclocked to 1540mhz boost during synthetic benchmarks.

Yeah that's a good point, I feel like it'll be addressed though (Maybe I'm too optimistic?)

It might just be that having "Perfer Maximum Performance" on, or having multiple monitors on, but my 980 SC never seems to go lower than a 1240 clock. Even when doing nothing. I'm not really concerned, but I have no idea if that's normal under these circumstances, or if that's something with SC cards.

I'm curious how reliable FRAPS is for frametimes analysis. I'm using FRAFS Bench Viewer for reference. I compared these setting a little while ago to test the effect they had on the overall frame times and variance. I played through the exact same area and attempted to make every run as similar as possible. I then normalized the graphs so they could be more easily compared.

I'm also very curious what conclusions you draw from these comparisons. Which example do you feel has the best motion (smoothest)? What effect is RivaTuner's frame cap having when already using Vsync? Why does using Maximum pre-rendered frames =1 cause such heavy variance?

My specs:

i7-920@3.8Ghz
GTX 670 2GB OC'd
6GB RAM
OS & Game installed on SSD
120hz display

I'm using Left 4 Dead 2 in this example on the first part of the No Mercy level while playing solo. In-game visual settings are set at maximum, film grain is off, and I'm using Ambient Occlusion through Nvidia Inspector.

I list the settings that I use in each image. For Vsync this includes D3DOverrider DB and TB Vsync, In-game DB and TB Vsync, and No Vsync. I also compare settings of maximum pre-rendered frames (Nvidia Inspector) of default (Use the 3D application setting) and 1. When I use a frame cap (through RivaTuner Statistics Server) I specify it as rtcap120, otherwise I'm not using a frame cap.

Reducing Max Pre-Rendered Frames to 1 can reduce latency, but it's not recommended unless the game is trivial to run. If your system cannot keep up, you'll likely get a less smooth experience, as frame times fluctuate more.

The buffering of frames is to help smooth out their delivery and improve consistency, but will add some latency.

As an aside, FRAPS records its data at a particular place in the render queue (I forget where, perhaps the front buffer?), so it may not pick up on the "true" frame rate in certain situations. If the developer has implemented it, frames can be rendered, but dropped before they are sent to the front buffer and FRAPS wont know that frame existed.

I should have my GIGABYTE GV-N970G1 GAMING-4GD 970 GPU tomorrow to replace the Radeon 7850 2GB that I currently have.

What's the "proper" way to go about the upgrade:

1. Download the latest NVIDIA drivers
2. Uninstall Catalyst
3. Disconnect the network cable (just to be sure Win doesn't do an auto search)
4. Safeboot into Win 7 and then remove the rest via Display Driver Unistaller (Guru3D)
5. Remove the old GPU
6. Insert the new GPU
7. Install NVIDIA drivers
8. Reconnect the network cable
9. Success?

K I'm going to bed I think think is mostly correct, LMK what you think.
Also who updated the Thread title to include '970!' ? I bet that's the thread character limit :p

qnd5B8i.png
$45 - SilverStone PS10B
$45 for something decently put together with USB 3.0 ports, I'll take it.

itFpUTp.png
$70 - NZXT S340
(New budget hotness. CONS: EASILY SCRATCHED SIDE PANEL, ONLY ROOM FOR 2HDD 3.5")

iWvC5Rp.png
$80 - Logitech G502
Second coming or something idk I haven't tried it yet

Some part swaps explained at 3am off the top of my head:
  • The GB SLI does SLI, XF, has M.2, SATA Express, Intel NIC and not shit audio (looking at you ASUS) so I think it's a winner here for almost every build. ASRock included as slightly cheaper Z97 option just for the chipset
  • MX100 swapped for 840 EVO due to FW bug (Will make thread later after fix is relased)
  • SeaSonic finally swapped in over the BP550 just straight up to do it's age it's about time I replaced the BP550 I think but the options STILL are not great. Please WTB best value 550W.
  • Added a bit more explanation to the Build summaries at the bottom
  • Finally added LGA 2011, but it's on Smokey, TBH not really sure what X99 mobo I'd go with that is sub $300. The ASUS is white so Smokey would buy it though.

Right, I've decided that I'll skip picking up a PS4 and pour that money into a better PC build, which I'll be getting in November. Go big or go home, I suppose...

Anyway, if anyone has any views on the following specs, I'd love to hear them. Hopefully I haven't got it all wrong, but you never know.

Case: Fractal Design Node 304 - €85
PSU: Fractal Design Tesla R2 650W - €110
MoBo: MSI Z97i Gaming ITX - €155
CPU: Intel Core i7 4790 - €285
RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB - €165
GPU: MSI Gaming GTX 970 4GB - €400
HDD: WD Black 4TB - €210
HDD: WD Black 3TB - €170
SSD: Samsung Evo 250GB - €120
OS: Windows 8.1 - €90

Total: €1,790

I need lots of storage for media, that's why the two big HDDs. Also, I'm not into overclocking so I don't fancy an unlocked CPU.

What do you guys think? Am I overpaying for anything? I'm in Ireland, and these parts/prices are from the main sites (Elara, Komplett, etc.)

Get the unlocked 4790K anyway it's worth it for the +0.4Ghz and better resale value.
Make sure whatever 970 you get can fit (IIRC Zotac is smallest)
Skip the EVO and get MX100/MX550/850 Pro since 840 has FW bug
Can probably get a different PSU than that Fractal unless you want it white :)

Minor things, looks good.

*The Non-GAMING Mobo is $50 USD cheaper and these are the two minor things and -1 HDMI port:
Audio Chipset Realtek ALC892 Realtek ALC1150
LAN Chipset Realtek 8111E Qualcomm Killer E2205
You need anything the GAMING version offers? Maybe with the i7 and 970 having the 8 pin Mobo power on the GAMING would be better vs the 4 on the non GAMING? Not sure if needed though.

I just googled the Seasonic M12II 520w PSU and although NewEgg seem to have stock, both Amazon UK and Scan.co.uk say it's discontinued. Might be time to replace it.

There is a newer model of it out now, the Seasonic M12II Evo.

Haz, probably worth pointing out in the OP that it's the Evo to get as the original Seasonic M12II is an old unit too.

Is there a way of finding out what is making my gpu go mad when I load into Windows 7?

I have two bootable drives: the SSD has no such issue (clock and memory sit at 324MHz) but my HDD loads in and the gpu sits at 914MHz and 3004MHz respectively.

The card is already working hard when it is sat at the Windows login screen. There is obviously a process that is causing this problem.

Edit: It does occasionally load in without having the high clock speeds but mostly it runs at the above high numbers.

Edit 2: It might be the same issue as xBladeM6x in that my nVidia power setting is set to "Prefer Maximum Performance". I am having absolute hell trying to change the setting to test this theory. I click the drop list and the control panel fades out to white and hangs. Whatever option I try to select it ends up doing the same.

Do you use google chrome or any browser with GPU acceleration? If so leaving it on will cause your video card to constantly work. My 780Ti usually idles around 30-33C but with "Prefer Maximum Performance" and chrome open it never drops below 48C

Thanks for responding, I'll have a think about what you've said.

FYI, the other build was largely the same, but with a 500W PSU, a Z87 mobo, an i5 4690, 8GB RAM and a 760 2GB. It was gonna cost €1,400 and the €400 difference would have been a PS4. My thinking was that I'd let the console handle future games, and use the PC for work and for making the most of the games I currently have. It's an interesting dilemma, I'm sure to go over it in my head again and again and again before the end of the month.

One thing would maybe be too add a couple more mATX mobo recommendations as there's some good value in the likes of the MSI Z97m Gaming and Gigabyte equivalent at the moment. Especially with the likes of m2 support and better built in audio.

Does anyone have experience with either the ASRock Z97 Extreme4 or the ASUS Z97-A? I have it narrowed down to those two, but I'm always after more opinions.

The ASUS seems to be favoured by a lot of people because of ease of instructions, BIOS and brand build quality. The ASRock wins the overclocking (and possibly the power/efficiency tests too) test at Tom's Hardware, and I think the ASUS comes in 2nd.

This is for a 4690k/212/8GB/970/SSD/2 HDD build in an R4, with no plans of more drives or SLI.

So, I decided to give my two MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V a go, because, hey, I have them, and they're great, right? And they ARE great, performance wise. But, as many have mentioned before me, they suffer from the worst coil whine I've ever heard (at least these two does). I can't hear the fans in my computer over the coil whine, it's that bad. So I've spoken to the shop, and they've agreed to let me return them. It's times like this I wish i was deaf but had 20/20 vision.

I have a weird problem. When i play games the audio in cutscenes is out of sync.
Currently i have the problem in Shadow of Mordor, Evil Within and Alien: Isolation.

Playing video files is fine. What did i do:

Remove the driver and install a previous version for the ROG Phoebus soundcard.
Install drivers for onboard audio and set onboard is default device.
Disable turbo mode for i7 4790K.

All didn't solve it. Any ideas? I will remove the rog phoebus card tonight.

For anyone with a native 1440p monitor, how does it look when downscaling a game to 1080p? Does it look naturally like 1080p native monitors, or is it blurry / odd looking?

Are you in college currently? Your school might have an "on the hub" store... http://onthehub.com/

I work at a University, so I was able to get a copy of Windows 8 from there for $10.
Hey thanks for the link. Sadly only computer science majors get access to dream spark premium at my school.
Reddit is selling again, although it seems like they've become a bit more restrictive over who sells them.

I think you mean upscaling from 1080p. I would think that it wouldn't look too good considering 1080p doesn't scale evenly with 1440p (in contrast, 720p scales perfectly within 1440p).

Uh plenty of technical improvements, and it would certainly be a cleaner upgrade to W10. Also W8.1 has better performance in some games, like BF4.
I mean certainly if he's on a tight budget and already has 7, but to pay for good hardware and not use it on more modern and proficient software seems counter intuitive ;P

I don't know about technical improvements, but I'll concede that there's a small performance improvement for Battlefield 4 that I've seen. Like 3-6%. I didn't know about that. Looks like Microsoft and their DirectX tied to OS stuff :(

Frankly even with that performance improvement, it's a toss up. 7 is regularly cheaper by upwards of 30% and still supported. We'll have to see what 10 brings.

It's honestly not worth it. I turn down settings to run at 1440p rather than upscale from 1080. When you see the native 1440p image you won't want to go back to anything else.

I can vouch for S5ean, me and two other friends have purchased Windows 8.1 Pro keys from him with no problem whatsoever, keys are legit and never expire. All of the sellers are either Verified Sellers or Moderators. The difference between $20 and $70-$100 isn't exactly a little extra. But, if you'd rather purchase from another source then thats cool, just trying to help out and save you some money.
