You may have just solidified my need for an Air 540. I've been wanting a new case, and damn this thing looks great. (As long as I can put a H105 radiator on the top vents)
I put identical 45mm thick 280mm radiators in one, I'd say you're fine.

I remember somebody mentioning in this thread a week or two ago about most Z97 motherboards not supporting Devil's Canyon CPUs without a BIOS update or something. When I get my parts in the next few weeks, am I all good to just pop the CPU in and download all the required software once I'm all set up or do I need to do anything else?

You'll be fine, don't worry.

Hey everyone, this is probably my first post here, but I need some input. I've decided to begin building a new PC. I plan on using HDDs, PSU, and the GPU from my current machine until I decide to replace those, or until I find a replacement PSU that follows the design I want for my case. My current PC is one I built about 2 years ago, and while I've upgraded the GPU, I want a new build. Mostly because I find it gaudy looking and feel like it.

Current Build

CASE
---CM Storm
MOTHERBOARD
---ASUS P8z68-V PRO
CPU
---i5 2500k
GPU
--EVGA GTX 780
PSU
---Thermaltake 850w Smart M Series
COOLING
---Corsair H55

I hate the fact that my PC looks so tacky, and I've been itching for a new build for a while. I've decided I want it to be classy, but I want to be able to still see inside. I don't want Red or Blue lighting. I'd like to stay away from Green and black as well. I'd like my build to be mostly white, and accents of Gold or Amber.
I'd like to water cool, but it's not a requirement, except for the Processor. I know I want that watercooled. As for custom tubing, I've never done it, but if it's possible I'd like to. I'd rather wait till a GTX 980 ti or something similar comes out, though.

Here's where I'm currently at:

Wishlist Build

CASE
---Corsair Graphite Series 760T
-----This is the one piece that I'm absolutely sure of. The huge window is exactly what I want, and the white is great. I'll probably replace the fans with either Noctua/Quiet ones or Amber-lit ones depending on the positioning.
MOTHERBOARD
---GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD3H
-----I'd go for another Motherboard if it was a better Gold or Amber and better software. I'm not so familiar with MBs, though.
CPU
---i7-4790K
-----I'd like to go better within a certain price point. I'm not buying everything at once, so it's still in the air. I plan on gaming at High resolutions.
GPU
---EVGA GTX 780
-----As I said earlier, I'll be using this until a better upgrade comes out.
PSU
---Thermaltake 850w Smart M Series
-----Again, same unless someone can recommend one that fits the color scheme, aka White or Amber/Gold.
COOLING
---Corsair H55
-----Same until I decide on getting a better one, unless I find one that's White.
MEMORY
---AVEXIR Blitz 1.1 Series Original Gold
-----A bit too Yellow, but there aren't that many options from what I've seen as fat as Gold or White.

I want my new Build to look sexy, and modern. I also want to be sure it will last a few good years without bottlenecking newer GPUs. Any input or reccomendations would be much appreciated.
ASUS Z97 has Gold
Corsair Vengeance RAM has low profile white, I think some ADATA are gold
NZXT Kraken AIO has a white fan and you can set the LED to whatever color you want
Btw, I wanted to share my PC with you guys :D

- Corsair Air 540 (Be Quiet Silent Wings 2, 140mm back, 3x120mm front)
- Asus Sabertooth Z87
- Intel i7 4770K (Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 2)
- Gigabyte GTX970 Gaming SLI
- Corsair RM750 PSU
- 256GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD & 1.0TB WD HDD

I need better cables for the GPUs :/
Air insides so clean

With all the dust filters, hows the dust buildup in the Air 540?
There is only one dust filter in the front for the intake fans. I think I'm gonna buy 2 additional ones for the bottom of the case and the back (PSU). The case is not perfect, but it's still awesome :D

The case is new, got it I think 2 weeks ago. So I can't tell you much about the dust buildup.

What would be a logical upgrade for my computer, if anything? I haven't touched it really in a couple years and I'm curious if anything makes sense or if I should wait it out. I kind of just got back into PC gaming, also use it for some programming occasionally.

I assume maybe upgrading my GPU would be the only thing. Or perhaps a funky G-sync setup... but I don't have an Nvidia card.

i5-2500k @ 4.4Ghz
Asus P8Z68-V Pro
16GB DDR3-1600
Radeon 6950 2GB unlocked to 6970
Antec 900 (sux)
Corsair TX750
Couple SSDs
1200p 60Hz display

Get a new GPU and you're good for another 2 years. If you have the $$$, maybe a 144Hz monitor (you can get one for ~$250).

Hmm. Maybe Amazon will get some later or tomorrow. Probably a big shipment just went out. I like Newegg but I honestly just want to get all my parts off Amazon. Partly because I have a GC I can use there too. :D
Amazon is way better with shipping and their Customer support can't be beat. I just couldn't wait.

DAS GOOD

The feedback on the switches is AMAZING. The feel holy fuuuuuu. No BS about it just straight business. I'm finding myself having to relearn some things due to no lettering, but other than that it is ace. I have a BlackWidow in my office that I use daily so I have a good frame of reference and the feel of this guy blows it out of the water.

Will be getting a 970 today since my 560 Ti has just crapped out on me after a little over 2 years of use. Hopefully, that will be enough to let me get Witcher 3 on high settings, even though my processor is rather weak (i5 760 @ 2.8 Ghz).

I see you got a Swiftech H220X on a X99 board. What's the temp like, if you're running a 24/7 OC system (say, vcore under 1.35v)?

I'm interested in getting a unit myself.

Oh god you don't want to know. My CPU sucks. At 1.27v it hits mid 80s, at 1.29v it went into the 90s. I'm at 1.25v 4.1Ghz and 2 cores peak at 80C during prime95, the others peak around 72C. Idles at 25C. I remounted the cooler, no luck exact same results. I wouldn't blame the cooler considering the benchmarks. I just lost the silicon lottery.

Wait a minute. I didn't post that in this thread...

I know you've already got the 970 but depending on the manufacturer you might still have a warranty on the 560 Ti. You could possibly RMA it, get a replacement and sell it.

Your CPU is still fine, and won't hold you back in most games if you overclock it. You'd be aiming for ~4GHz with that generation of i5. Well worth doing. Grab a Hyper 212 (Evo or Plus, whichever is cheaper) and get to work.

Huh, that doesn't seem right... what's the default vcore? Is it a 5820K?

edit: there must be some kind of setup issue with your cooler.

That...doesn't sound right? My 4930k is at 1.392v 4.3ghz and stays right in the mid 70s in Prime.

I second the Llama, just get a 970 or 980 and you are good to go.

It's a 5820K, I don't remember the exact vcore at stock, something just above 1v. Don't make me relive the pain. I've spent so much time OCing this CPU. 4.1Ghz is the best I can get. The extra voltage needed to get stability at a higher clock speed causes the temps to get out of hand and ultimately blue screen anyway. At 4.1 Ghz @ 1.25v its stable and maintains reasonable temps. It absolutely sucks. I've built 4 machine and OCed all 4 in the last year. 2 Ivy Bridge, 1 Haswell and this Haswell-E. Every one I built for other people overclocked decently and easily and the one that I personally own fought me tooth and nail.

Great job on the paint!

As far as thermal paste, I'm partial to the dot method. If you do the cross method make sure you don't over apply.

damn i friggin' LOVE that case.

Came out really well, the case is great in general.

I got the last part today, the processor and christ it was as annoying as I expected putting that heatsink on. Really fiddley and kept sliding on the paste. Not the most ideal installation, the rest was smooth though and...

IT LIVES!!

Honestly shit myself when I turned it on, the light came on and it was dead silent... I thought I killed it somehow. Its just that quiet, no GPU probably a big reason for that but still it whispers operations.

Changed the clock speed for the memory, optimized the SSD, got windows 7 installed, temperatures look fine (need a stress test) and setting up everything now. Gonna be a long old process but the hard part is out of the way at least, been pretty fun getting back into the swing of things. My wallet hates me but the feeling is mutual so who cares.

Well for some reason they just increased the price on the EVGA cards. Screw that.

*edit*

nvm just the superclocked 980. The other ACX 2.0 is still only $550. SC 980 is $626...dafuq? Why would anyone pay that much of a price increase over the other? You could just OC the other one to where the SC is at. Can't be that hard since they're the same cards. Oh well guess I'll save myself some more money and get the regular ACX 2.0.

Welp, that definitely doesn't sound good. 0.04v bump and it went into high 80s? I would assume even at 1.25v on full load it would stay under 70C. If you got the 5960X it probably makes more sense, but 5820K since it has less cores, should be easier to manage. I assume you're on the latest UEFI update and/or tried reseating the water block?

I thought the PCGaf thread would be more appropriate for this discussion.

I did reseat the water block. I attempted to updated my bios to the latest version over the weekend and it did not go well. Any attempt at overclocking resulted in near instant bluescreens. I rolled back to this previous version and my original overclock remained stable.

At 1.25v prime95, doing the blend test, stays a few degrees below 70C for the majority of time but then it hits that one group of tests that makes the temps jump about 10C.

I wish I could find something wrong with the set up but there is really nothing to it. The H220X is as simple as could be to install and set up. 2 Sata power cords. One for the pump and one for the PWM splitter. The pump and the fans PWMs connect to the PWM splitter and the PWM splitter connects to the CPU fan connector on the motherboard. The CPU block is easier to install than most after market air coolers.

Have you tried using a different cooler? Maybe even the stock Intel one? That way you could possibly exclude the water cooler being the issue for whatever reason.

;_; why... literally why

The Haswell-E CPUs don't come with a cooler, unfortunately. I would have to order a new cooler just to test. I imagine my old Thermalight Ultra 120 Extreme doesn't have the right mounts for my new MB.

If there is something wrong with the cooler, it would have to be something minor that allows it to work but poorly because if it was completely malfunctioning, Prime95 at even 1.25v would cause the temps to skyrocket. Though it is conceivable. My first instincts, however, is that I just got some bad silicon. My results are bad but not so far out of line that I couldn't accept it.

Sounds about right with TD. They suck man. Did you try asking them what's going on with your order?

I presume that would be the small FFT tests, those can definitely ramp up the temps considerably. Saw someone on another forum wrecked their 5960X doing it.

Yeah I liked the contact surface size of the cpu block. It's massive. I suppose if you got an extra 120mm fan you can try semi push-pull to try lowering your temps further.

I just ran into this thread on AT... sort of a similar issue: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2399608.

There are references to the AT Haswell E thread, might be worth taking a look in case other people have had similar problems.

They have a habit of overselling items. And not paying rebates. And having slow customer service.

What's wrong with windows 7? Maybe he already had it. I don't see much of a reason to buy 8 when you already have 7

Uh plenty of technical improvements, and it would certainly be a cleaner upgrade to W10. Also W8.1 has better performance in some games, like BF4.
I mean certainly if he's on a tight budget and already has 7, but to pay for good hardware and not use it on more modern and proficient software seems counter intuitive ;P

Well, I guess it's too late for this piece of advice, but I heard that you could restore performance by making an image of the drive and writing the image back to the drive...

Kinda useless now, though..

Makes sense, I found out like a week ago (Well that probably explains a lot of Flash video problems, fingers crossed) and heard it was coming out soon so I'll wait the extra few days that hopefully address the root of the problem after making a full backup of course.

So upgrading to a GTX 760 2GB should last a good while?

give me more info. The 280 / 290 deals right now are extremely good and you get 3 or 4GB of VRAM to work with as well if you dont mind going AMD again.

Also the Phenom II will start to be a liability as time goes on
