Now I'm torn between the SeaSonic SSR-550RM and the EVGA 220-G2-0750-XR. Any comments regarding these two? Are there any better options out there for the same price (~$90)? Any comments about the build itself are more than welcome as well. :)

For the sake of $10 I'd get the G2.

I was looking for informations about the future Be Quiet! case when I stumbled onto this case modding :

Being a big fan of steampunk I though i should share even if it is be a bit offtopic.

If it's just general usage and you're not doing tons of writes then just get the MX100.

In my case, it would be for Windows, random programs like Malwarebytes, Steam (games on an HDD), and maybe a couple of small games. That MX100 500GB is super tempting. Lol

Would I lose a lot of performance by going with a Core i3 4360 (dual-core 3.7ghz) over a Core i5 4690 (quad-core 3.5ghz)?

There's an €85 price difference, and I don't plan on playing future games on this system, only games from 2013 back (though, that does include Crysis 3, which I bought for some reason).

I'll be pairing it up with a 760 2gb card and 8gb RAM, by the way.

One of the motherboard standoffs in my case extends right through the motherboard. Screws go into all the others. Is my motherboard still grounded?

I hope so because I've been using this computer for a few weeks.

Just get a i5-4430/4440/4460.
They are cheapest once, they usually cost the same or 10$ more, fit on the same board, got more L3 Cache and are WAY better in programs which support more cores, yet as good as the expensive i3s in single threaded programs.

Anyone need an MSI Gaming 4G GTX 970? I grabbed 2 when they were available. Retail+$20 shipped (Nets me a whopping $8 for the trouble)

Any Haswell refresh overclocking guides that you recommend?

I'm on an MSI mobo if that helps at all.
There's nothing in the OC thread that I could see.

Think I have narrowed down my upgrade on my PC. Want to stick with the same motherboard so going to go with the I5-3570K. Will then either go with the Geforce 970 of the Radeon 280X. Depends on if I can find any deals for the 970 as I can get a 280X for $270 or so.

Can't wait!

Now just need to gather the 500$ or so. But Micro Center has the 3570K for 189$ right now!

256GB SSD for 110$. Get 2 of those in RAID. Man. Would hit play on my system and would load my OS in seconds. W7 already loads in 20 seconds thanks to my MB's quickboot setup.

This post isn't by me, it's by a guy with the same username as me.
A friend is selling his pc and i´m tempted to buy it. We both work together as game developers, so i know that he treats all his electronic devices with great care.

This build has 11 months, but he only used it like 30% of this time (he has 2 jobs and 3 "girlfriends").

The basic configuration is this:

CPU - Intel Core i7-2600K (running at 4.0 Ghz)
MB - Asus P8P67 Deluxe
Cooler - Noctua NH-D14
RAM - Corsair Dominator GT 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2000
Storage - Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB
P. Supply - XFX P1-750B-BEFX
Case - CM 690 III

The only thing that i think i need to add is an SSD. His is offering me for the price of R$2.500,00 (roughly U$1.040). But the thing is that here in Brazil if i choose to buy an new R9 280X it would cost me R$1.000 (U$ 420) just for the GPU.

My doubt is if it's wise to buy this build today and if the price is fair.

Thanks GAF

If I were you I would not bother with the CPU upgrade and just get a GTX 970. Your CPU is not that much slower than the one you're thinking of replacing it with TBH: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/363?vs=701

On price picker the CPU/GPU is about $570 retail.

So that leaves another 450 or so for the rest of the parts. Seems like it would be just about right for the asking price.

@ stock yeah but with the K I would likely OC to about 4.2Ghz to be able to keep it cool with my HAF's case fans. My 2400 is Oc'ed to 3.9Ghz.

But is interesting the 2400 is still holding up pretty well. I really haven't seen a game except for the Total War series push all 4 cores to 100% yet.

In that comparison the 2400 is 3.4 Ghz, 3570 is 3.8 Ghz. Seems to me the performance gulf will be similar if you have the 2400 at 3.9 and the 3570 at 4.2 (all speeds are @ turbo). Your money of course, just a thought.

yeah I gotcha thanks for linking that. Actually got me reconsidering the CPU upgrade lol.

Its tough with CPU's man. Its incredibly difficult to tell when your CPU needs upgrading.

There needs to be a benchmark out there that tests your CPU and says, " you need to upgrade bitch! ". Would make it so much easier.

What do you primarily use your computer for? If it's gaming just stick with the 2400 for now. GPU money goes much much further for your dollar.

If you do intensive editing or encoding then it might be worth it, IMO.

Yeah, that´s what i thought. And it needs to be remembered that here in Brazil the prices are very different from the US ones. The same GPU that´s $230 is sold here for R$1000.

Thanks!

Mostly gaming but I have begun to work with Unity FREE for now.

Once I get more used to it and begin to get more serious with it I may upgrade to PRO and try to put a game together. But probably a year off or so and waiting for 5.

Hi guys, I'm looking for some help to setup my first gaming pc. So far I've only used a laptop as it provides me with the mobility I require (I study in a different country to where I'm from). I realise most of the people here will probably know a lot more about PCs than me, and I apologise beforehand for asking any noob questions which I may end up doind.

Your Current Specs: None
Budget: £500 England
Main Use: Light Gaming, Gaming and General Usage (uni work). I need to be able to pack it up easily when I move countries.
Monitor Resolution: I will need to buy a new monitor. If a good one won't fit within my budget I will get a better one later on.
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Dota 2, CSGO, Shadow of Mordor, The Evil Within etc. Does not have to be ultra high settings, high/medium is perfectly alright (as long as I can play 40+ fps).
Looking to reuse any parts?: None
When will you build?: ASAP
Will you be overclocking?: Don't know how to.

I've considered getting something cheap of ebay (case/ram/motherboard) and then buying the other components etc. But I honestly don't know what is safe/good when it comes to desktop building.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could go cheaper with a G3258 which you could upgrade down the line too.

You'll want a z97 mobo for that CPU

If this was US, I'd say too much hands down. I'm not sure if your prices are a lot higher there though. Based on your comment about the video card, I'd imagine they are.

Still, you can build a superior system for that same $1k US. The 2600k is pretty much end of life and that graphics card will start to show its age.

I sent my GTX 970 back via RMA today and installed one of my old 580s... I tried turning my subwoofer on and off again and my second monitor had no flickering at all.. Something must be wrong with the 970.

I just hope they realise this.

Will there be any good deals on GPUs and CPUs on Black Friday or should I just go ahead and buy parts now?

I've got my eye on the GTX 750 ti, but if I can't get a better card at basically the same price because of Black Friday I would probably hold off for a little while. If not I'll pull te trigger in the next week or so

Nah I'd def. wait for atleast the time period around black friday.

You'll have deals on various things at retail and online the whole week, not just Black Friday anymore.

Hey everyone, this is probably my first post here, but I need some input. I've decided to begin building a new PC. I plan on using HDDs, PSU, and the GPU from my current machine until I decide to replace those, or until I find a replacement PSU that follows the design I want for my case. My current PC is one I built about 2 years ago, and while I've upgraded the GPU, I want a new build. Mostly because I find it gaudy looking and feel like it.

Current Build

CASE
---CM Storm
MOTHERBOARD
---ASUS P8z68-V PRO
CPU
---i5 2500k
GPU
--EVGA GTX 780
PSU
---Thermaltake 850w Smart M Series
COOLING
---Corsair H55

I hate the fact that my PC looks so tacky, and I've been itching for a new build for a while. I've decided I want it to be classy, but I want to be able to still see inside. I don't want Red or Blue lighting. I'd like to stay away from Green and black as well. I'd like my build to be mostly white, and accents of Gold or Amber.
I'd like to water cool, but it's not a requirement, except for the Processor. I know I want that watercooled. As for custom tubing, I've never done it, but if it's possible I'd like to. I'd rather wait till a GTX 980 ti or something similar comes out, though.

Here's where I'm currently at:

Wishlist Build

CASE
---Corsair Graphite Series 760T
-----This is the one piece that I'm absolutely sure of. The huge window is exactly what I want, and the white is great. I'll probably replace the fans with either Noctua/Quiet ones or Amber-lit ones depending on the positioning.
MOTHERBOARD
---GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD3H
-----I'd go for another Motherboard if it was a better Gold or Amber and better software. I'm not so familiar with MBs, though.
CPU
---i7-4790K
-----I'd like to go better within a certain price point. I'm not buying everything at once, so it's still in the air. I plan on gaming at High resolutions.
GPU
---EVGA GTX 780
-----As I said earlier, I'll be using this until a better upgrade comes out.
PSU
---Thermaltake 850w Smart M Series
-----Again, same unless someone can recommend one that fits the color scheme, aka White or Amber/Gold.
COOLING
---Corsair H55
-----Same until I decide on getting a better one, unless I find one that's White.
MEMORY
---AVEXIR Blitz 1.1 Series Original Gold
-----A bit too Yellow, but there aren't that many options from what I've seen as fat as Gold or White.

I want my new Build to look sexy, and modern. I also want to be sure it will last a few good years without bottlenecking newer GPUs. Any input or reccomendations would be much appreciated.

I'm curious how reliable FRAPS is for frametimes analysis. I'm using FRAFS Bench Viewer for reference. I compared these setting a little while ago to test the effect they had on the overall frame times and variance. I played through the exact same area and attempted to make every run as similar as possible. I then normalized the graphs so they could be more easily compared.

I'm also very curious what conclusions you draw from these comparisons. Which example do you feel has the best motion (smoothest)? What effect is RivaTuner's frame cap having when already using Vsync? Why does using Maximum pre-rendered frames =1 cause such heavy variance?

My specs:

i7-920@3.8Ghz
GTX 670 2GB OC'd
6GB RAM
OS & Game installed on SSD
120hz display

I'm using Left 4 Dead 2 in this example on the first part of the No Mercy level while playing solo. In-game visual settings are set at maximum, film grain is off, and I'm using Ambient Occlusion through Nvidia Inspector.

I list the settings that I use in each image. For Vsync this includes D3DOverrider DB and TB Vsync, In-game DB and TB Vsync, and No Vsync. I also compare settings of maximum pre-rendered frames (Nvidia Inspector) of default (Use the 3D application setting) and 1. When I use a frame cap (through RivaTuner Statistics Server) I specify it as rtcap120, otherwise I'm not using a frame cap.

^ What resolution do you game at?

I play games like Battlefield and Warframe at 1080p with max settings. I use a VG248QE monitor with Lightboost, so I try to get 120 fps.

Other games, I try to screenshot at 4K or higher, using tools such as GeDoSaTo to reach up to 10K in some games. I don't expect to get very high framerates at such resolutions, but stability is nice. I usually play Remember Me at 8K, which gives me a nice 30 fps average.

Maybe you should try to get a G-sync kit for your monitor.

You may have just solidified my need for an Air 540. I've been wanting a new case, and damn this thing looks great. (As long as I can put a H105 radiator on the top vents)
