I've got the mortar, works great with my 6600k, no complaints and feels above its price range. Just don't try crossfire, lol, the 2nd slot operates at X4 when you do.
I add (found) the ASROCK Z170 Extreme4 at R$889 too.

BTW I won't do CF or SLI.

Don't know much about the differences between different cpus and what not. I currently have the following:

Intel Core i7-3770K Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz 8 MB

I'm unsure as to how to check what is the highest new graphics card I can go without causing a bottleneck.

I currently have:

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 680 OC 4GB

wanting to go up to:

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 980Ti 6GB WINDFORCE 3X OC EDITION

Main purpose of just upgrading the GPU is that I want to be able to run games at 1080/60 for the next few years easily. With modern games, I haven't been able to reach that, Dark Souls 3 being the latest example. Looking forward to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided later this year too. Would this card cause a bottleneck? Am I reaching too high and there's a better card that will suit my needs. Is there a good site that can say if a cpu/gpu combination will cause a bottleneck? I really only want to upgrade my GPU right now. I can go up to 850W.

Any advice I can get will be helpful.

CPU is more likely to bottleneck you when you go to certain games and when you are going up in framerate rather than graphical quality. Your CPU only needs to be fast enough to provide your games with a new frame every 16ms for 60fps gameplay. Your old CPU should be able to manage for most games in the foreseeable future. A faster GPU enables you on the other hand to increase the visual quality while maintaining good framerates. This all depends on the type of game you play. Some games are harder on the CPU than others.

Cool, thanks. I bought the EVGA version of the 980Ti. We'll see if my CPU can handle it. I hope it can.

Hi Guys i was trying to get a 3rd monitor one main one in the middle ( the other 2 will be on the sides)

I currently have Asus VE247 Monitor X2 ( Both are 23.6 inches)
I want to have maybe 27-29 inch in the middle and maybe a higher quality monitor. Any recommendations?

I'd go with one of the BenQ's, since both have built in strobing.
ASUS can do it with a software program, but the colors are worse vs the BenQ.
(I have the xl2411z and a buddy has the Asus)

Asus has displayport while the XL2411z does not, but I think the 2430T does. Might be worth your $100.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'll have a look at the BenQ's then. Just did some quick reading, am I right in understanding that with the ASUS you have to use external lightboost software, whereas the BenQ has it's own built in equivalent? If so, sold!

I've never had use for displayport so I'll save my money there.

Look at the specs of the Noctua then look at the specs/or measure your case?

I just checked the specs online and it looks like the case supports upto 160mm and the noctua is 165mm. But then I measured the space between the bottom of the cpu heatsink itself and it looks like it's about 164-165mm of space. The side panel also bulges out a little because it optionally supports a 200mm fan, so that means a bit more extra room, I'm just not entirely sure how much.

So based on all that it seems to be a maybe :p

I'm debating buying it to test if it actually fits in the case.

Ooh that is close. I actually have a 212 evo in mine right now and it has a decent amount of clearance. Is the panel able to lock into place?

That's correct.

I am *this close* to ordering these parts to build a PC for my friend with his $300 budget.

GPU: GT 730 w/ 1GB GDDR5 (the GDDR5 version is actually solid for the price)
CPU: Pentium G3258 (overclocks like a champ even with stock cooler)
MOBO: MSI H81-P33 MicroATX LGA 1150 (gets the job done)
CASE: Rosewill FBM-01 MicroATX Mini Tower (2 preinstalled fans, gets the job done)
RAM: 1x8GB Kingston 1866MHz DDR3 (good RAM for a good price)
HDD: WD Caviar Blue 320GB 7200RPM (enough space for my friend, cheap)

What do you think? This amounts to exactly $300. My friend isn't willing to go used or spend any more than $300. He already has his OS, monitor, and KB/M sorted.

So I'm probably going to end up buying the Noctua NH-D15 and see if it fits in my current case. If it comes down to it I could just get a larger case to accommodate the cooler.

Low end video cards like that are shit for their price range, and you can't overclock that Pentium without an pricier Z series motherboard. Better to go with an AMD A10 APU with a motherboard like this. Quad core processor + on board video that's better than the 730 you linked.

You don't need a Z series motherboard to overclock the Pentium G3258. I know this for a fact.

"MSI H81M-P33 (Micro-ATX): 4.5 Ghz at 1.3 volts". That's the exact motherboard I have in my parts list.

So does anyone have any advice to troubleshoot a stick of RAM not working? I have 2x8GB and only one gets picked up. I've reseated them, changed slots, etc.

I'm going to go to Canada Computers as soon as I can to get replacements/have them test it, but was just wondering if there was anything I can do before then.

Figure out which one is broken and ask for a replacement.

Didn't know that. Still, would probably recommend the APU over the 730 still, since it's on board video's gonna run smoother, as seen in this video (Russian, but you can clearly see the framerate in the games they're testing).

Whats weird is I put both cards in each slot by themselves, and none of them worked, but somehow I got it to work by placing both of them. But only one still works. I really hope there isn't a bent CPU pin. That'd be shitty.

You're not wrong. I might tell my friend just to keep the 60 bones a 730 would cost and save up for a 750 Ti if he wants a good budget GPU (that refurbished 750 Ti FTW from EVGA is a pretty good deal).

I'd tell him to wait for Pascal/Polaris to come out, since he might be able to land a good used mid-range card like a GeForce 950/960 or Radeon 360/370 for cheap.

Computer is hard crashing on me during gaming. Screen freezes and audio gets stuck until I hold the power button down.
Was about to RMA the video card, have it out of the system, and it did it again during Dota.

So, I want to stress test the computer to see if it has something to do with the audio, or if heating up is causing it. Can't decide if PSU or Motherboard at this point.
Does one of the stress tests still work with windows 10?

Quick HTML noob question. I have a 1000x3000 template .jpg for my eBay page.

I want it to look good no matter what the viewer's screen res is. Is there something I should be doing besides simply using:

<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b668/test/test.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo test.jpg"/></a>

Is there another code to automatically resize the image according to the viewer's screen res? Thanks, appreciate it!

Any recommendations guys?

Budget? Purpose? Country? IPS or TN or VA? 144Hz, 120Hz or 60Hz? Do you need GSYNC or FREESYNC? Is there any other particular use that you need it for that you're looking for something in particular?

Your question was very vague. Another good idea would be to go to a computer store like microcenter or frys and see a few different ones side by side.

This will be interesting. I'm planning of buying a new rig in the summer once the Pascal cards are released though I'm not building my own or purchasing a premade gaming PC. Four years ago, I bought a decent PC at a relatively low price with a good CPU and then purchase the GTX 660 separately and installed it. I plan to do this again since it saved me some money and was a quick and easy process. I've had no issues when it came to running 360/PS3 games at 1080p for the most part.

I'm not totally well-versed in what CPUs are the best or worst. I'm looking to purchase a PC from Costco and the one I am looking at has an i7 6700 3.4 Ghz Here is the computer. I just want to know if this CPU is good. I plan to purchase the "GTX 1070" Pascal GPU when that comes out, so would this CPU be a good fit? Should I look elsewhere? I'm mainly looking into 1080p60FPS gameplay at high-ultra settings, so please take that into consideration.

Also is 12 GB of DDR4 RAM good enough for the next four years? Would it be wise to instead purchase a PC with 16 GB of RAM?

Yea, tell him to save up for at least a 750Ti which means roughly console level performance at 75W tdp.. Anything lower is horrible price/performance wise and just a waste of money. (an AMD R7 360X would do as well)

Yeah I think I might give it a try for that price. My 980ti should be good enough for at least some 4K gaming as well (I'm pretty satisfied with 30 fps for single player games).

Will do. I did pull the trigger. It looks like it was worth the risk. It should be here later in the week so I'll do a quick writeup for you guys (coming from a 1440p 27' panel).

Been wanting to get into 4K for awhile and since my computer can handle it and 4K prices are coming down, I figured it was worth finally dipping my toes into the 4K pool.

I do wish there was plans for 4K Blu-Ray support on PC but as of now there doesn't seem to be any movement on that front.

coolasj19

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
This is what I came up with, obviously others can chime in too:
A few things of note:
  • The case, cooler and power supply I chose to keep it as quiet as I could. The cooler will be much quieter than a stock-style one, the case is padded to reduce noise and the power supply is semi-passive, so the fan only spins up under a lot of stress.
  • The monitor is only 1080p (which is fine for 24") but is G-Sync and 144Hz - 144Hz especially makes gaming just so much better.
  • A half-decent keyboard/mouse combo is included as is what is widely considered one of the better headsets for PC. It's obviously not gonna please audiophiles as much as a $300+ headset but it's much better than a lot of stuff that's more expensive.
  • I'd be very tempted to hold out on the graphics card as the latest NVIDIA ones are expected in the next two to three months. If anything it means you may get a 980Ti a little cheaper :p
Completely forgot to reply, thanks! I think I'm gonna go with the i5-6600k though right now. I love my video editing and Photoshop but I don't do them in such volume that the extra $130 is going to come in handy. I don't know if i7 is gonna be future-proofing much either, since I've been advised that concept doesn't really apply to CPU's. I set alerts for all the parts to drop below a decent sales price but I'm gonna wait until E3 for that supposed GPU pricedrop. Computex is in early June and apparently that's when stuff may release and I can wait until then. Either the card drops a few bucks or I get the newest thing.

I'm gonna be way too busy next month anyway to actually sit down and build the computer a yeah.
Coolasj19, just as an additional note to this, you'll have to remove the top HDD tray in that case for that GFX card to fit. You'll still have room for 3 drives though.
Thanks for the warning. 3 drives is absolutely plenty for me.

Ok, any red flags here? The budget was roughly 1250 and I'm coming in a good deal under that so I'm pretty happy there. I do not intend to over clock so no k or z170 - the CM 212 is mainly for noise reduction.

Hey homies. My PC is getting up there, and I believe my graphics cards is finally poofing on me. The fans, in particular. I'll post a picture via Speccy for this. You may see why I think it's time for a boost.

MZUx8wU.png

The CPU is hot because I have a heatsink on it (a Hyper 212 EVO to be specific), but that heatsink originally came with a fan that busted. The fan is pennies, so I never really got around to dealing with it. I only have Skype and Chrome open, and the GPU is twerking that hard. I don't hear the fans because I think they have gone, and my proof is they make grinding/clicking noises from time to time. I've had this build for 3 years, and the card for 4, so I know it's not a new issue, but one of wear and tear. I now have the GPU crash rather often and force me to turn off my PC by its button, so I'm sure it has to be that.

Enough of my case for this being the problem, though. I want to upgrade, and I have considered a GTX 970 to be something I can jump to. Problem is, how do I find out if it'll work for me? In particular, the PSU and what it can carry. It's been so long since I've done this jazz, I would rather have someone tell me, surely, if I have the machine to handle the card and not shell out $300 on a pretty looking thing.

Hopefully one of ya'll can help.

What's your PSU specs? How many amps on the 12v rail? Watts of the overall PSU?

Yeah that's no good with idle temps that High, dang... I don't think my 980 ti gets that hot under 100% load..

Well after all my deliberation about the best monitor for less than $400, I'm coming to the conclusion that gsync is pretty much out. It's just too expensive and I'm concerned about being tied into nvidia for the immediate future (even though historically I've been nvidia most of the time).

There's only one gsync monitor under $400 that has potential and the user reviews aren't the best and no professional reviews yet. Plus it's only 24" and I kind of want to go bigger.

I think I am going to go with the best 144hz 27" I've found:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GWFNMJS/?tag=neogaf0e-20

BenQ XL2720Z. Reviews are fantastic. Has benQs strobing tech. Great out of the box calibration. Fastest response rate. Best colors for a TN.

I'd love a variable refresh rate monitor but it still isn't quite there. I don't like the competing technologies and the price is out of hand. Going to have to live without it for another few years at least.

Most likely. If it can handle the 580 it will handle the 970 easily.

Cool, since I will probably won't buy the motherboard and CPU till Q4. But I'm guessing maybe DDR4 will be standard then. And it looks like they're X99-compatible. What does No-ECC means?

It's an error correcting feature, mostly used in highly accurate operations. For normal use, it's not necessary.

If you are set on no overclocking you can go with an even cheaper MOBO if you like. Other than that, that PSU is not very good. Not bad but not good enough for its price. Also you can get a windows key for cheap from some key sellers. However, it may get revoked. Do it on your own risk.

The rest is fine.
