is it a retail or OEM license? if it's retail you should be fine to just create a USB installlation media and stick your key in. if it's OEM then you will need to buy a new license for your new motherboard.

Retail. Oh, now I remember the USB method indeed. Thanks!

Update on my problems, seeing as TechSupport thread is low-activity.

Removing SSD does nothing. Tested each memory DIMM too, tested them individually, no effect. Also, mobo's MemTest does not run no matter what.
This is starting to look like a CPU problem but not a heat-one, since the computer didn't shut down when the problem started. Not to mention, temps have been fine even during hottest days (i monitor them while gaming).
That, or the mobo is somehow busted.

So, what can i do? I'm running out of ideas.

Seems like a possible bad MB. You get no video right? Tested the video card in another PC or tried another card?

Any good bluetooth dongles out there for a desktop?

bought a no name 4.0 a while back and it was pretty bad. Looking for one to connect wireless controllers.

ASUS and Gigabyte are good brands for mobos, it should be fine. You don't need 3200mhz RAM though. Go for anything between 2400 and 3000, there are no gains really beyond 2400 and definitely none above 3000 when gaming. Just get a PCIe wifi card or use ethernet and you're good to go, this is a good one. I LOVE my S340 case.

Thanks!!! That really helps. And yea I've fallen in love with the S340 case, it's such a beauty + it's affordable.

I'm guessing you tried already but do you still get nothing connecting the monitor straight to the MB? I think it's more likely to be a faulty MB than the CPU

The main thing i would like to know it is there new processors expected to be out next year? I will be going for the 1080 GPU or if the 1080 ti is out then i will go for that.

You need to update that list... Get a skylake cpu and 16 gb of ddr4 ram.

He won't be buying anything for another 8-9 months. Kaby Lake will be out by then.

The list is my current build i have. I just don't want to do my new build then 2 months later a new range of CPU's come out

Cannon Lake is due to hit in the second half of next year. If that ends up translating to Q2/early Q3, then I'd sit on your hands for a further few months. (This sort of vagueness is why there's really no point in planning the specifics of a build months in advance.)

I was in here asking about micro itx cases a few weeks ago for my wife's pc. She kinda doesn't care about the micro stuff after knowing the 480 probably won't fit.

She wants to play overwatch, and wow, and various other things that aren't super high spec, but also doesn't want to have to upgrade in a year. 1080p and high-ultra with good fps is the goal

I feel that a 6600k and a 480 might be too much PC for those needs? We have a budget of under $1000 and I got the build right about $870 (will post when o I get to a PC)

But are we going overkill for those few things? I have a 980 ti that I'll be upgrading when the probable 1080ti launches, so she's going to get that from me. Should I wait on 1060/470 benchmarks and decide?(We also have a copy of Windows waiting that we want to get installed and upgraded before free 10 goes away)

Is a 6600k the right choice or too much CPU for 1080p?

I cannot test another card or test the GPU in another PC, unfortunately. But logically, i can GPU problems out probably.

I'm guessing you tried already but do you still get nothing connecting the monitor straight to the MB? I think it's more likely to be a faulty MB than the CPU

Monitor is connected to the mobo but i get no image.

If the mobo is faulty, how come the power LED is lit and the whole thing still starts? Or is it just that some part of the circuit board has failed?

I assume there's no real way of determining if the motherboard or the CPU has failed beyond testing things with another CPU or the CPU in another mobo?

*sigh*

The motherboard probably still has warranty so i can get it replaced but man, re-building the whole computer... so frustrating.

Not to mention, i will have problems with Windows if so, probably. I have Windows 10 upgraded from OEM Windows 7... Will this mean i need new license?

i'm thinking of slowly upgrading my pc now. i need a new cpu fan, might go h100 but for that i need a new case, that's a €200 drop, on top of a new gpu, so i'm gonna upgrade my case fans now with a view to getting a new gpu this month, then a fake rebuild later in the year

I've noticed a quirk in my OC'd CPU. Normally the clock speed scales to work load, but sometimes after the CPU has been at top speed for a while (for example a game session), the core clock would refuse to come down. How do I fix this? (Intel speed step and C-state are both on.)
Anyone?

That seems weird. What are you using to monitor the cpu speed, cpu-z, hwinfo or etc.? In Task Manager, anything with high CPU usage? In Power Option > Advanced Settings > Processor Management, is the Minimum Processor State = 5%? Maybe, a Bios update.

I currently use a Lenovo Ideacentre AIO to do my video editing and uploading, using my Elgato connected to my PS4. I want to buy a desktop PC, though, so I can record directly from the PC, as well as record my PS4 gameplay. These are my current specs.

I'm looking for a desktop that has at least double the RAM, 2TB, and is capable of running Grand Theft Auto V. That is one game I must be able to run. I have a budget of £800-£1000.

This gets you an SSD, different mobo, better case and the sapphire rx480. Same specs everywhere else.

Both put you under budget and smokey fast. Upgrade to HMB2 GPU next year and you're set for another 3-5 years.

I used both HWmonitor and Intel XTU. CPU usage was around 5% at the time. My power option is on "Balanced", and my MB BIOS was the latest version (MSI Z170I).

Check Power Options => Change Plan Settings => Change advanced power settings => Processor power management => Minimum Processor State = 5%.

Does the CPU idle correctly if you run stock speed?

Will the RX480 be enough to run GTA V at 1080p60?

Hey guys, this question is unrelated to this topic but hopefully you can shove me in the right direction. I'm gonna build my new PC this week (the OP here is a big help), but of course it will be a Windows machine and I've been using Mac as my main computer for like the past 10 years. Are there any Gaf threads on getting into Windows (again)? Mostly looking for recommendations when it comes to programs for music organizing etc.

I only have the cooling option in my processor power management settings. I tried some other games, it seems that it only happens after Overwatch, really weird.

Have any of the new cards (480 or 1070/1080) been announced in a short form factor yet? Considering something to replace the GTX 970 but it can't be a full-size card.

Don't think there's a dedicated Windows thread... not that I've seen anyways. I will recommend MusicBee as a music player/organizer. It doesn't look particularly great (no fancy skins that I've seen) but the functionality is second to none.

Ah that sucks.. But it explains why I didn't find anything haha. Well, thanks for the recommendation, I'll just figure things out as I go.

Yes most sites report similar results to this. As do friends I have with the card and a decently clocked CPU. Sorry I can't give better results as they all have I5's or above at 4.5ghz or better.

I have one myself, it's a decent GPU. I've only played DOOM at 1080 but it runs on ultra just fine.

Here's what I've got for my wife's PC

We didn't want to spend more than 1000 and we are well under.

The goal: Overwatch, wow, and whatever other games she wants to play at 1080/60 at high or higher

the plan: There's obviously no case in this build. She hasn't decided yet and we're going to look tomorrow. she liked the design r5 white version, but wants to do some more research. silent casing isn't important to her but windows and ugly transformer shit are a big no no.

Also, no video card. The 470/460 should be available later in the month and one of those is the plan. She's playing on a macbook pro right now so integrated is going to be about the same performance. I have a 980Ti in my PC, with plans on upgrading next year and giving her this one at that time.

Anything you guys would change out or add? SSD isn't too important for her either but I'm thinking I might get one anyway.

Also I'm getting the CPU/Mobo from fry's for about 50 bucks cheaper than what is listed here.

Why that motherboard with a 6600k? Either switch it out for a Z170 board or change the 6600K for a 6500.

Certainly get a SSD.

Go with a RX480 or wait and see what the GTX1060 has to offer when benches come out. Those would pair well with the rest of the system and stay under your budget.

would the 6500 still be more than sufficient for 1080p? She likes her monitor now and might go up in size but not in resolution as far as this PC is concerned.

Long term viability of the computer will be affected. Smarter to pay the extra 40-50 combines for the 6600k and a Z170 Mobo. Here's two Mobo options for different build sizes.

I'm gonna to throw this out there. ..

How do I take advsntage of an ssd? What do you do with it

Put your OS and applications on there, it will decrease boot times, application's launch quicker and make the computer feel faster. Then store all your videos, photos, documents etc on a bigger but slower HDD.

The Samsung 850 pro is a great little drive.

I get that

I guess my hesitation for going that route is that the 6500 and a 480 are more than enough for stuff like no man's sky, overwatch, wow, and indie games @1080. she doesn't play stuff like doom or anything that's going to push it. I have a 6700k and a z170, and i'll still probably upgrade my PC before we do hers again, giving her more hand me downs.

Still going to keep researching though so thanks for the suggestions.

Then go for the compromise and get the 6500 and a Z170 board. She doesn't need 3000mhz RAM, or 16 gb, So go for 8gb @ 2400, unless you REALLY want 3000. And I threw in the 850 Pro SSD.

If that is the case, she will be fine with a i5 6500 then. Obviously a Z170 with a 6600k is a better option with more longevity and connection options. If you can squeeze that into your budget with a SSD and a RX480 or a GTX1060 then that is the way to go.

Quick question to you smart folk.

I have my PC hooked up to both my 4k monitor and 4k tv but only ever have it activated on one at a time.

If I lets say, extend the display and have games show on my TV and something like a twitch stream on my monitor both at 4k, will it cripple performance?

It sort of depends on the player, but in my experience the performance drop has happened with flash player, and it was small if nothing. And I believe twitch uses html5

So the fact that I'm extended across two 4k desktops shouldn't impact it? That's what I was more worried about. I thought it would cripple my fps in games.
