It's a fresh install so not much really. Just Battle.net, Windows Defender, NVidia stuff, Realtek audio program, and Corsair CUE.

Open task manager, details tab, sort by CPU utilisation. See if you spot something spiking.

And as I said before, use a stress test program like aida64 or prime95 v27.9 to load up the CPU. Use CPUz to read the clock speed under load, it should be 4000mhz. If it is more than 4000mhz, make sure the core enhancement is disabled in bios.

Pretty good, and very good chip if its doing 4.8Ghz 1.32v with IBT.
What is the cooling and ambient temps?
My processor and card are under water. One 240rad and one 360 rad with furious vardar fans blowing through them. It's a pretty intense cooling setup if I'm honest. I'm gonna try for 5.0ghz tonight after work and then DOOM!!!!!

The build that you guys (special thanks to vector and Empty Space) helped me with is almost all here!

So the preparation for the build begins as I start to sort out the necessary software things like browser profile and iTunes playlist copying... Is there anything worth me downloading now in advance onto external drive to install onto the new machine? Any BIOS, er, stuff I need to think about, software/drivers I should get or any other words of advice before I start building this monster?

So, I've decided to try my hand at my first PC build and could use some help. I started with the "excellent" build in the OP and switched some parts around based on recommendations I saw in the thread.
Link to parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bDfqpb
Questionnaire:
Your Current Specs: NA
Budget: $1400ish, US
Main Use:
Light Gaming 4
Gaming 5
Emulation (PS2/Wii/Wii U) 0
Video Editing 0
Streaming games in HD 0
3D/Model work 0
General Usage 3
Monitor Resolution: will be gaming on my tv from the couch. TV currently 1080p, but would like to accommodate move to 4K eventually.
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to srun well: No specifics in mind, but want 60fps with good image quality on the current big releases.
Looking to reuse any parts?: nope
When will you build?: now
Will you be overclocking?: not at first, maybe later when I learn more.

So, how badly have I effed this up? Any obvious mistakes?
One specific question I have is cooling. Do I need to add case fans to the build or is the 1 intake and large grates seem sufficient for what I plan on putting inside?

Reposting for the fresh page. Does anyone have any input on this build? Any comments would be welcome. Thanks!

Everything looks fine. If it where me though, I'd change that WD drive from a 5400rpm to a 7200rpm model though.

Seems changing the PSU worked! When my PC Mate shorted it took my 550w OCZ Fatality with it. It served me well and loyal for the past 6 years. It'll be missed. :(

Anyhoo, with the Asus Z170-A, is it okay to leave my Vcore at adaptive if I OCed my 6600K to 4.5Ghz? Cooling with a 212 EVO and MX-4.

Hey all, I hope someone can help me out...I have a PC I only built a couple years ago, but you could say it was still a more budget PC, as I got the bare necessities when I built it, but it still works pretty well. The thing is I want my PC to run games just better. I'm kinda tired of getting the mid range video cards, and I'd like to be able to run games with a constant 60+ frame rate, and high to ultra details.

I clearly can not do that now with, I am rocking a core i5 3470 @ 3.20 ghz, with 8 gigs of ram and a gtx 760 video card.

Is it possible to upgrade this computer to get the great performance I want, or would I be too bottle necked to really do it? I am honestly considering going all out getting a gtx 1080, but I don't know if it would be worthless on my current PC, and if I need to build from scratch. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Depends what you play, at what resolution etc
But I will guess there will be no bottlenecks since most games just need good GPU.
If you play with only 60hz then I hope you play with at least 1440p resolution, else gtx1080 is overkill.

Also if you are worried if you need to get whole new pc then you dont really lose anything if you get just gpu now and see how it works.
If you are not happy with just that then you can game with your current pc until you get rest of the parts and just put gpu there.

My current monitor only does go up to 1920x1080, so yeah, maybe that would be overkill. I'm just so damn tired of making compromises in games on PC. So a 1070 would probably be fine though?

Yeah then I would suggest to get some better screen with 144hz maybe and 1070/1080

Any idea what the best price 27 inch monitor would be? I ask, because I'm currently sporting a 27 inch one, and I'd find it so difficult to get a smaller screen size.

What's your motherboard? If you have a Z series chipset (z77 or z68) you could look into getting a used 2500k, 3570k, 2600k, or 3770k and overclock for a nice increase in performance that you can really feel. You should be able to find a 3570k in the 100 dollar range. If you do not have a z series motherboard definitely start from scratch.

edit:

It would also be nice to know your budget and complete specs. If you are willing to buy a 1080 though, lets say you have at least 600 to 700 to spend. But what's the point of getting a 1080 if you are only running a 1060p/60hz monitor? So part of your budget should go to upgrading your monitor also (its important).

Did as you asked and yep, the core enhancement feature was the problem. Thank you.

I can't get anyone to answer if it's happening to them in the Street fighter V thread, but maybe you guys can help. I'm having the game straight quit to desktop on me after about fifteen minutes of use routinely now. No error code...just quits. Is that a memory leak?

I played Star Citizen for a couple hours straight last night and no such issues. I'm just baffled.

Anyone know when to expect the 1080 Ti? Early next year?

Probably not until AMD releases Vega, if they need something to compete with it.

Don't be surprised if there isn't a Ti card this time around, the Titan X is already what a lot of people thought a 'ti' version of a 1080 would be specs wise, so there's not really a lot of room in between.

But you never know.

Not sure where else to post this outside of the 1070 review thread, so I'll just put it here.

Really hoping someone might be able to help me. My computer was running just fine with my 970, but ever since I installed my EVGA Superclocked 1070 I'm noticing screen tearing across basically everything. Stopped playing Mirror's Edge because of it, luckily don't see any in Overwatch, just downloaded the original Titanfall and it's there too. VSync is doing jack shit. I don't have a special monitor or anything. Can someone help please? :(
Someone? Anyone? Please? :(

Recently, I noticed that while gaming my monitor goes black for less than a second then it goes back to normal. It only happened 3 times so far, once for each session. Is it possible that its the monitor-GPU connection? Or the problem is the GPU-MOBO connection? I use an HDMI cable by the way and my monitor is an ASUS MX series.

SK Hynix and Samsung Talk HBM at Hot Chips 28 – Low Cost HBM, HBM2 and HBM3 In The Roadmap

xHBM or HBM3 – The Next Generation of High-Bandwidth Memory Chips

With HBM2 hitting production, SK Hynix and Samsung are already prepping up for the next iteration of HBM memory as demand for bandwidth and efficiency is ever increasing. SK Hynix terms their next solution as HBM3 or HBMx while Samsung calls it xHBM or Extreme HBM.

SK-Hynix-HBM3.png

The specifications for HBM3 have not been finalized yet and are mostly under consideration at this moment. But two key points that were discussed during Hot Chips and highlighted by Computerbase reveal that HBM3 would offer twice the bandwidth and feature a very attractive price. We are talking about 512 GB/s bandwidth from these chips compared to 256 GB/s offered on HBM2. Four of these stacks would result in over 2 TB/s of bandwidth. Sounds juicy but we sure don’t expect a mainstream graphics card getting that any time soon. May be after Volta?

http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/column/kaigai/1015892.html

xHBM / HBM3 is probably what AMD was referring to in their GPU architecture roadmap as "Nextgen Memory" for the Navi GPU architecture.

Can anybody recommend some pre sleeved cables? Or modular PSU that come with sleeved cables? Last time I did this I had to sleeve them myself. I never wanna do that ever again

Probably not the best place to ask about this but how reliable are Logitech mouses?
Thinking about getting wireless Logitech MX Master and hoping it would last me years.

When buying video card, they all say something like overclocked/super locked etc. Do you have to overclock them yourself, or are they overclocked for you?

If you buy an OC or Super Clocked, they come already in OC.
You can additonally OC them yourself, with the tools provided by the company.

regarding the AMD roadmap, is Polaris only what cards we have right now? so the 460/470/480? there won't be a 490/490X based on Polaris or will those cards be Vega with HBM2 and be called RX 590/590X?

Very reliable, I don;t know what the MX Master is but Logitech is what people tend to recommend

Thank you, probably going to grab one then.

Also another issue I just had.. Does anyone know what is this?
I was messing around with smooth scrolling option in Firefox earlier then when I entered that tab it was like that, refresh fixed it but now I'm scared for my life that my GPU is dying. Just got GTX 1070 last week.
All information is appreciated to ease my soul.

This looks like an GPU failure.
Was that the first time it occured?

Yup, I've played games and ran 3DMark with no problems on it. All the artifacts were inside the moving part of the window, and nothing on my second monitor.

Okay, can't be a GPU failure then. Try running FurMark, and benching your GPU a while.
But maybe Firefox was just spazzing out.

That's what my old 5XXX card looked like when it died.

I thought if it was GPU dying it wouldn't have been visible in screencap, but I honestly have no idea.

Thanks, I didn't want to sleep at night anyway!

I'm not sure if a GPU glitching out is visible if you screencap it.
The only thing to try would be to put it under heavy load and see if it still has those problems.

Sorry but I have another question..
I have done some cpu benchmarks on my I7 6700HQ.
Now my multi core performance is higher than what I saw in other test from cinebench. But my single core performance is only 104-107 while in tests I saw it should be around 130.. Is this normal?
My multi core performance is 677 while in test I saw it should be 671.

And done! I ordered my new config:
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P
  • CPU: i5 6600k LGA1151 3.5 - 3.9 GHz
  • GPU: Zotiac GeForce GTX 1060 - 6 Go
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX Black DDR4 2 x 8 Go 2800 MHz CAS 16
  • CPU Cooler: Be Quiet Pure Rock

Regarding my PSU, I own this:

Not ideal I guess, but it will suffice, I hope (?).
