I feel like I just post questions in here and don't really contribute to thread in any way, sorry about that. Anyway here's another question.

I have the following PC currently.

CPU: Intel i5 4690k o'clocked to around 4.4ghz I think (I had issues going higher)
CPU Cooler: Noctua DH15 (the crazy big one)
GPU: R9 290 4gb with Accellero Xtreme IV cooler (recently installed, much nicer temps and volume)
RAM: 16gb RAM (DDR3 I believe)
Motherboard: Can't remember :/ not really important I guess.
Monitor: An old 24" 16:10 Dell thing my old housemate didn't want anymore.

Basically I have a bit of money to spare but I'm not sure what to upgrade. I'm thinking possibly my monitor but I'm not sure if I NEED to per se. I really want a 1070 but again probably not worth the money in Australia at this point, especially considering I'm fairly happy with performance in most high-end games.

Any thoughts?

Maybe look into a freesync monitor?

Is it new enough to exchange or return?

Sadly no. I may try again to fix the issue with flashy/static videos (letting them run more than 10 min) or applying some pressure to the area, but otherwise I may just deal with it. The fact that the pixel isn't dead gives me a little hope that it might be fixed.

Changed out the CPU to an i5 because performance cost is better, increased RAM to 3000 because that DOES make an FPS difference with DDR4, less expensive case and a different PSU. This has more budget headroom if you want a faster SSD, more memory, faster GPU etc...

I have one actually! The Samsung CF390 and I love it. Viewing angle is great.

Meant to change the case actually, thanks for reminding me.

Definitely the GPU, although it's worth waiting until AMD's new cards come out and the stocks of Nvidia's cards become more readily available.

Yeah if Freesync is anywhere near as good as Gsync that would be a very substantial upgrade.

Sell me on it? I'm vaguely aware of it but I have no idea exactly what improvements I should expect.

Yeah definitely waiting for GPU I reckon.

4 stars on Amazon with over 7000 reviews, 7200rpm, 64mb cache and SATA3, same price after currency conversion so seems like a decent deal. You at least didn't get ripped off. Link's here.

Huh, NCIX was saying in the specs it's a server HDD for some reason, weird. And yeah I'm not overly concerned with the price.

Screen tearing gone forever.
Playing between 50-60 fps is like playing at a stable 60fps.
Playing between 60-144 fps is some pretty smooth icing on the cake as well.

Welcome! I have that case and it's airflow is superb, cable management easy, and looks great. I wouldn't recommend if I didn't love it.

Agreed. Freesync monitor and/or GPU upgrade.

So I've never really bothered with GPU software in the past, I just run my shit barebones using the drivers. I have a new card on the way and am wondering what the concensus is? Do most people use the manufacturer specific utilities? Do you need them for stuff like turning the fans off automatically when idle, or is that just built into the BIOS?

I really prefer to run less software so if it's not necessary I'd rather avoid using one.

What do you guys think of this loop?

One edit, the Black Ice Rad is switched out for a XSPC EX240 as it's 6mm thicker.

Hmm ok. Reckon I should go for bigger than 24"? 16:9 or 16:10? Any recommended brands?

This has the best reviews

I'm planing on getting a 6600k or 6700K can anyone recommend a quality heatsink that is a little more compact than 212 Evo and I could still do some light OC with it.

My beautiful Logitech MX 518 mouse finally broke after years of use. Damn. :( That was the best mouse ever. What do you think would be a good and similar replacement? Would it be the Logitech G400S?

I bought a G402 to replace mine. It's been fine.

Anyone able to comment on the difference between a 24" screen and a 27" one? Is it worth the extra momey?

I'd say go to a best buy (or otherwise) and see for yourself. The answer to your question kind of depends too on if you meant different resolutions or not (e.g. both 1080p? or is the 27" 1440p?).

Personally, now that I'm on 27" 1440p I'm not going back.

1440p is a bit too expensive for me so definitely 1080p for now.

You guys think it's worth the trouble of swapping my 500w bronze PSU for a gold one I have coming in that was intended for a secondary computer? Gonna be swapping my 970 for a 1080 in the main one..

Question someone told me that I need 4 sticks of ram for quad channel on this mono MSI X99A GAMING PRO CARBON LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Motherboards but if I had 6 would I still get quad or would I need 8?

What's Noctua's best low-profile CPU cooler right now? There seem to be a few decent options available but I can't figure out which one is the most recent addition. For reference, these are the coolers that are compatible with my case according to pcpartpicker.

Noctua NH-L9i
Noctua NH-L9x65
Noctua NH-D9L
Noctua NH-L12
Noctua NH-C12P SE14

I'm really surprised by how many people still choose the cooler master hyper 212 evo cpu coolers for their new pc. It's not a bad cooler by any means but it came out in 2011 I believe, and there are better coolers out there for similar prices at this point. For just $5 more you can buy a Cryorig H7 universal and you'll get a better performing, quieter cooler as well as one that looks good and is easier to install.

I'm googling around and I'm interested in this build, mainly for an easy to carry around computer. How does it look? (I already have a 980ti, being replaced by 1080 sometime)

Might bump up to i5 6600
Might bump up to 2x8 3000 ram
Looking for suggestions on the two 2.5 hard drives, in case I'm missing something.

is there anything obviously wrong with it? Also I have no clue what they mean by the part "Slimline Sata to Sata Power Adapter" and their listed link doesn't work for me. Any help?

CM Hyper TX3 Evo (90 x 51 x 136 mm / 3.5 x 2.0 x 5.4 inch VS the 116 x 51 x 159 mm / 4.6 x 2.0 x 6.3 inch of the 212) A bit less performance than the 212 but it's still fine.

Hey all, have a new laptop (HP Pavilion, 16GB DDR3 RAM, i7 6500U CPU, 2 TB HDD) that runs like crap. Any non-hardware suggestions for how to make it run better?

Fresh install of windows? It usually comes with a bunch of bloatware/crap you don't need.

That or put on a lightweight linux distro.

That Slimline SATA-SATA adapter is for your slim optical drive I believe. Nice case. It's the many variations of Silverstone line of HTPC cases that spans the more "gaming" right up to the more "HTPC" like yours. I've the Silverstone Raven RVZ01 for mine and it's been working like a champ for more than a year already. Just recently upgraded the GPU to a GTX1080. It was built with the living room in mind, and now it stays hidden behind the TV as my VR rig. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/3PwMpb

Looks solid. Definitely make the jump to 3000mhz, for gaming it makes a marked improvement in FPS and is the sweet spot for price v performance.

I uninstalled everything that didn't seem important, honestly not too much stuff.

Nothing will revive it more than an SSD.

Yeah, my desktop is SSD. I have a 250GB external SSD too, was thinking about installing the OS to that.

Overall just surprised with a competent CPU and good amount of RAM (DDR3, I know) it runs so slowly.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of it after people recommended it here. It is merely ok.

Though it doesn't help that most of the heatpipes aren't directly over the major hotspot

Are there cheap ways to get a win 7/8 key to convert to 10?

I lost my win 10 key when I was pruning my email account, running win 10 preview build too so I can't even parse my key from the registry. I even spent time on the phone with Microsoft trying to see if they could find the order history.

Could you link to your build? This choice depends a lot on your CPU choice, case layout, and overclocking ambitions.

Assuming you have an i5/i7 K-variant, you should go for either the L12 or D9L. One could make a case for the L12, as it has a bigger fan. But it pulls air toward the motherboard, which is never ideal. I would go with the D9L. It's just a smaller version of the dual-tower NH-D14. That should handle at least a mild overclock (at ~70C), maybe a full overclock if case airflow allows.

If you have a locked processor, get the L9i/L9a. It's really just a stabler version of the Intel stock cooler, and the cheapest Noctua model.

Oh snap, nice. When do you get the rest and when will you build? I should start getting parts tomorrow.

I just ordered the rest of the build last night (loop/ram/fans), so my guess would be early next week.

I'm jealous, I want to put this together as soon as possible.

looking to drop some money and buy a new monitor. Definitely has to be freesync compatible as it's the main reason I'm buying a new one. 1080p gaming.
Thinking about buying the AOC as it's so cheap but I see a couple of other brands near its price point. Thoughts?

$300 or less. I know IPS panels are the shit but don't need it currently.

Amazon best ship my stuff today (I placed the order almost 24 hours ago). If hands are sat on until Thursday, the package likely won't leave the US until Monday, and if that happens I doubt it'll arrive by the following Tuesday.

Amazon's product system automatically reserves items when you place an order, right? I ordered a couple of case fans in addition to the other bits and bots and the product page says there are now two left.

Guys, I'm thinking I'm going to get this setup that vector824 picked out for me, but I'm going to swap the monitors for two Dell Ultrasharp 2415s.

One question I had before I dive in is the power supply -- is 650W enough? I have a 750W at home and it's running lower spec parts in pretty much every component.

What do you guys think?

Here's the parts list (with the old monitors):

Well under budget on both, just throw in a cheap mouse and keyboard, some speakers and you're good to go. There's wiggle room for more drives or RAM if needed.
