I have a 256gb Samsung 950pro m.2 that was $117. It depends on what you're doing with it, I'm constantly doing file transfers and video editing so for me faster drive = more time saved. Now my program start times are near instant and my computer is extremely responsive also, so less frustration there. Jumping from a standard HDD to a m.2 would make sense, but in your case it's probably a minimal increase in speed, especially considering your upgrade cost. I'd go with the GPU upgrade honestly.

Edit: They DO MAKE PCIe adapters to m.2, and the reviews are great. So this may be an appropriate solution for you.

Thanks, yeah I think I'll just get a new graphicscard, I will probably get most out of it if I upgrade the 680.

Edit: I have a mini ITX board, so only one PCIe slot

Has anyone found out a solution to the Windows 10 random freezing problems?

Its been a year since I've done a new build and the majority of that time has been met with frustration over constant freezing.

Supernova 550w G2 or 550w GS? Both from EVGA. Which would be the better one? Got my refund for my 600b from EVGA so going to replace it with a much better quality PSU.

Hey, I'd appreciate it if someone could gloss over this build I've researched and give some feedback. Presently I'm thinking the below, with an R9 480 (which I anticipate to be about $350 Aussie)

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/HffZLD

Current Specs:Only have monitor, keyboard and mouse
Budget: <$1200 AUSTRALIAN; can be a little bit flexible
Main Use: Gaming and general office use
Monitor: 1080@60hz (for now)
Intended build date: Hoping to order parts within next 3-4 weeks
Overclocking? Maybe - tempting, but don't know enough about it.
Future 'upgrade-ability'? If possible, I'd like a build that will support Vega/HBM2 next year, in order to jump on the VR bandwagon

Cheers.

Quoting for visibility. Plz halp.

Would this be a decent rig?

G2 for the longer warranty and extra SATA power cables unless you absolutely must have silence, than the GS is slightly better for that.

Hello everyone,

I have a PC with a 2600k CPU and a GTX560Ti graphics card.

I recently bought a 4K monitor and realised that the graphics card does not support 4k resolution. Therefore I am considering doing a minor upgrade. I'm thinking about buying two RX480 and use crossfire. Does VRAM stack up when using crossfire? In that case I guess the 4GB version is the better option, isn't it?

Is the 2600k CPU any good for 4K resolution or should I upgrade it?

Hey guys,

Wonder if someone can spec another box for me? The last one for my bro was pretty cool and he's doing what he needs to on it. I'm considering waiting for this 480 as well?? Hope to be taking delivery on weekend of 1st July

I have a monitor already.
I have Operating System and license already;
Gaming mostly at 1920 x 1080/ 60Hz (downsampled if powerful enough);
Mainly be using it for games like Pillars, Civ V, Warhammer, Total War, CS:GO etc as the primary genres. Will also be using it for hobby development in Unity and Unreal 4, Visual Studio/Photoshop;
Budget: Up to £700 GBP
Need keyboard and mouse;
Ideally some memory to run some VM Hosts for development and work related purposes;
Not bothered about physical drive (e.g. blu-ray/DVD-RW)
Don't use a huge amount of storage. 500GB SSD will easily be enough for what I do/use as I have a laptop too;
I've always been intrigued by water cooling, but never built one - gimmick or legit?
No interest in VR whatsoever;
Will still use PS4 for exclusives
Overclocking not necessary but maybe squeezing out some extra performance for newer games in a few years
Not bothered about upgrades, but I want it to last 4 years or so if possible.

Any other game recommendations based on tastes above also will be nicely received :)

Did the best I could based on your budget.

Damn I was going to get the Asus Z170-PRO which has white accents but now that I got the MSI 1080 I kinda want a black and red mobo. The Asus ROG Maximus viii looks good but the reviews seem mixed. Anyone have any input on that board?

This Gigabyte one looks pretty good.

Guys, is it worth upgrading from a 2 x GTX 780 SLI setup to a single GTX 980?

I am thinking about it, but I don't know... Would it be better to wait for the normal 1080 at this point?

980 is not the best value for money, but depends what price your getting one today. I would be waiting for a 1070 or 1080 non reference design. Hold out a little more and you have another 2/3 year setup on your hands, the 980 is old now.

Yes, I think I'll do that. Do we have an ETA for the normal 1000 series' release (not the founder's editions which have been released)?

Your guess is as good as anyones. The partner cards are released officialy, but availability is sparse (or very, VERY sparse depending on your country). I assume they will be available without refreshing 24/7 starting mid July.

2. CPU support list http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty%20Z170%20Professional%20Gaming%20i7/?cat=CPU

Short answer, yes it supports any i7 or i5 model 6xxx.
Above steps can be applied to any component to understand its compatibility.

Considering you are new, maybe consider an mATX or ITX system, ATX is not really needed these days.

Check if fan stop is enabled in Asus AI suite Fan Xpert.

No, VRAM does not stack. And multi-GPU configurations almost never work as well as you think they will. A single 8GB RX480 or 1070 would be a much better choice.

And your CPU doesn't matter much at high resolutions.

I'm particularly frustrated.

I spent some time getting Windows 10 back down to my copy of Windows 7 and have all the service pack upgrades successfully install. I have 32GB of RAM in there, of which only 16GB can be used.

God damn Windows and their different variants. I'm running Home Premium.

I don't want to spend money on a copy of Home Premium. Looks like I'm going back to Windows 10.

Think I'm gonna go with this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P0EQD1Q/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Dual setup

But it's so tempting to get that 27" version, looks so awesome. But I figure it's better to do dual 24" than just one 27"

Have you considered 21:9 at all? I'm much more satisfied with my 34" 21:9 over my old setup with dual 24" although it may depend what you're doing. For gaming it's definitely cool, but once you get past the honeymoon stage you don't notice so much, at least I don't. I'm extremely happy with it for photo editing and recording music.

I had a 295x2 which got defective. So I sent it to XFX and they will either send me a replacement or get a new Fury X card.

My gut tells me that the 295x2 is better. Based on a quick glance, it performs a tad better but obviously its a power hungry beast.

Here is the question for you guys. If I plan to resell one of these in the next few months, which will net me the most money back?? I think I will get a 1080ti once they release by selling the AMD card. So GAF, what say you?

I'm mostly going to use it for programming and app development, with some light photoshop and premiere.

The problems I have with 21:9 are:
- 1080 pixel height: I love 1200 and I'm sad it's apparently going out of style, but the monitor i linked at least has it. Those extra pixels make a big difference when coding.
- Dual monitors have better W10 snap. I could be wrong and it's possible on a single monitor, but I like that on my dual setup at home I can snap windows to the left or right of each individual screen, or maximize on just one screen. Very easy with the Windows key + arrow buttons.
- I like to rotate one monitor portrait occasionally because sometimes it's better to code that way. Obviously not happening with one monitor.

I've considered some 4k monitors which would give me a ton of real estate each way but they don't seem to be quite as mature yet, not to mention the potential strain on the video card.

Speaking of which, has anybody used a curved monitor? What did you think of it?

My concern is that I'll need to be teaching some people on this computer and I'm worried the curved angle would make it hard to view if somebody was sitting next to me, or if I was sitting next to them.

Like the 3415W on the page I linked earlier looks gorgeous but I just don't know.

I'd say that your 295X2 will get you more money, but it comes with that caveat you mentioned : power hungry. It would be much easier to resell the Fury X though it will not net you as much cash as the 295X2, provided you can get a buyer for the 295X2 that is.

I just got lucky and have a Gigabyte G1 1070 on the way. I have an i5-2500k @ ~4.2 ghz which I'm sure is fine but my RAM is ancient. It's 8 GB of DDR3 @ 1333 mhz.

Should I upgrade to 16 GB at 2133 / 2400?

Whoa, I just checked DDR3 prices; they're higher than DDR4!

Sure, it would be a good idea to upgrade. I don't know about 2133MHz+, but having 16GB of RAM is cool for general desktop use. 16GB @1600MHz is about $50, 2133MHz is $60.

Here is what I ended up going with, parts should all be here by next week.

Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty Z170
CPU: i7 6700k
CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H110i GTX Cooling
RAM: CORSAIR 16GB (2 x 8GB) Vengeance LPX DDR4 PC4-25600 3200MHz
Video Card: ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 8GB ROG STRIX OC Edition
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 750
Case: Corsair Carbide Series Air 540
Monitor: ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q 27"
UPS: APC BE750G Back-UPS
Mouse: Mionix Castor Multi-Color Ergonomic Optical Gaming Mouse
Keyboard: Corsair - Strafe RGB MX Silent

I'm excited. Went with Amazon in a lot of it even though some things were a little cheaper elsewhere because of Prime shipping and financing. I've never gone this hard before on a PC so this is the first time I will be gaming with a build like this.

I shouldn't need anything else right? All cables and whatever that is needed should be included with this stuff right?

Ah, I forgot the OS. I saw some videos of people saying that you can get a legit Win 10 product key from sites like kinguin for cheaper. How do you guys feel about that? Or should I go and pay full price?

Same here!

Question:

How many watts does a UPS need to be? I'll be rocking a 1080 i7 6700k and a 27 inch monitor along with an external hard drive and don't know what else. The power supply I went with is a 750w.

http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

Calculated from that website, and assuming you're running 16GB RAM and SSD with mild overclocking, you'd probably wouldn't need anything more than 412W, although it's always nice to have more power. http://outervision.com/b/Zw9UN7 Edit as required.

If you're getting a UPS to pair it with that PSU, get the maximum wattage your rig draws from the socket, which is not necessarily your rated PSU wattage. You can get that maximum wattage either via that PSU calculator webpage I linked or using a wattmeter.

PSU(Power Supply Unit) is not a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). UPS allows your rig to run continuously even when there is a power loss, for a set amount of time, so that you can quickly save your work and shutdown safely. PSU is just that, a power supply unit that plug into your power source at home to power your PC components inside your rig.

Noticed a stuck cyan pixel near the center of my primary monitor last night (Acer H236HLbid). :/

Tried using jscreenfix to reset it to no avail. Might try applying some local pressure with a narrow, blunt tip. TBH it doesn't bother me too much, but it still kind of sucks (especially being near the center of the screen).

Then just a few minutes ago I thought my secondary monitor (11-years old, trusty 1280x1024) had some dust on it but there are two apparently dead pixels diagonal from one another near the top right. Though, I think these have been there for awhile and I just didn't register it until now.

I must have pissed off the pixel gods. :p
Can't be too bothered by that older monitor, but the newer Acer one is a bummer.

What do you guys recommend for dust filters? I have 3 140mm fans, one front and 2 on top. Then a 120mm on back. Only the front is instake but still get dust in even with the front having dust filter built into the case. Was thinking of putting a filter over all of them.

Can I get some advice on upgrading my machine? It's a few years old and it's due for a tuning.

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K (w/Cooler Master Hyper 212 heatsink)
MB: ASUS Maximus V Gene mATX LGA1155 Z77
RAM: 2 x DDR3 8GB Corsair Vengeance Blue
Power: 620w
Graphics: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB GDDR5

Want it to run new game releases with respectable performance, I'm using two Dell Ultrasharps at 1080, and I use video/photoshop software.

I think RAM is OK, want to upgrade the graphics card and maybe the CPU.

Changed out the CPU to an i5 because performance cost is better, increased RAM to 3000 because that DOES make an FPS difference with DDR4, less expensive case and a different PSU. This has more budget headroom if you want a faster SSD, more memory, faster GPU etc...

GAF, I'm sure you guys are sick of offering advice to people, but I've been struggling with a decision for quite some time now. I am currently using two 24" BenQ 1080p/60hz TN monitors. I have a GTX970. Would I be completely foolish to upgrade into the 10 series since I'm still rocking the 1080p monitors? Would I be better served upgrading to a 1440p or high refresh rate monitor instead? I kinda miss the couch gaming experience with a big screen as well so I have no idea what the hell to do at this point. So torn.

I feel like I just post questions in here and don't really contribute to thread in any way, sorry about that. Anyway here's another question.

I have the following PC currently.

CPU: Intel i5 4690k o'clocked to around 4.4ghz I think (I had issues going higher)
CPU Cooler: Noctua DH15 (the crazy big one)
GPU: R9 290 4gb with Accellero Xtreme IV cooler (recently installed, much nicer temps and volume)
RAM: 16gb RAM (DDR3 I believe)
Motherboard: Can't remember :/ not really important I guess.
Monitor: An old 24" 16:10 Dell thing my old housemate didn't want anymore.

Basically I have a bit of money to spare but I'm not sure what to upgrade. I'm thinking possibly my monitor but I'm not sure if I NEED to per se. I really want a 1070 but again probably not worth the money in Australia at this point, especially considering I'm fairly happy with performance in most high-end games.

Any thoughts?
