I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

Only it was muuuuuuuch bigger than Destiny, and also much more transformative.

Oh, I know, it makes the argument for it even easier, Destiny was just the most recent example of a game that could be GOTY without it actually being all that good I could think.

It's not just because it's online focused. It seems any game that doesn't feature a full featured story as its main hook doesn't get any of that critical recognition (except for Mario if that). The likes of Overwatch and Dark Souls need more critical praise so that hopefully the industry gets a hint and stop pouring so much talent into those types of games.

Uncharted is pretty but really mundane, boring, and overall a very tedious game to play. Cinematic games like those need a serious overhaul. The limitation of gameplay to tell a more "cinematic", "move-like", "story focused" games is not worth it. Let the game stand on its mechanics, not a pretty facade.

I played OW for more than 300 hours, and will pour more into it. I maybe put in 10 for U4 SP and will never ever go back.

Im sorry for UC4 fans but that game is boring as hell. "Just press forward to win" The worst collectors edition I ever bought...

Good explanation. I thought current GOTYs are must be released in 2016. So December 2016 games (if nominated) are still valid for 2017 GOTY?
The Keighleys have a large budget that is fueled by advertising, so he needs to get his show out before Christmas, causing the window for his awards to be November to November. It's a unique case due to the size of the production.

If he tried to do a January to December window and run the show in January, he wouldn't be able to get the money to run it, because noone wants to advertise their shit a few weeks AFTER Christmas.

As a big Uncharted fan....Uncharted 4 sucks. Boring pile of nothing for most of it. A shitty TLOU wannabe with nothing to do most of the time.

SP through to MP UC4 fucked up so badly. It's like they didn't want to make an Uncharted game so when tasked with making one they did their best to not make one. They successed sadly.

Lol

Overwatch or DS3 should easily be GOTY both are great games that have a ton of replayability. Uncharted 4 was a flash in the pan.

Yeah I mean I hate how Uncharted 4 doesn't even have MP mode. And if they did it probably wouldn't even be that extensive or offer free DLC like additional game modes such a horde like mode. What a shame.

SP wise what ND could have done was something like the ability to replay specific encounters from the single player that were the most fun and memorable on any difficulty. Or at least they could have added the cool game modifiers they had from Uncharted 2 like low gravity or unlimited ammo. What a pile of trash that game is.

Overwatch is one of the most over-rated games I've ever played. There's at least five other games this year I'd consider better and more deserving of a GOTY title.

I think Dark Souls III, Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, The Witness, DOOM, Inside, Project Diva Future Sound, Hyper Light Drifter, Salt and Sanctuary, and XCOM 2 are all better than both Overwatch and Uncharted 4, but that's just me.

Uncharted 4 is an absolutely fantastic game, that is very worthy of GOTY...any other year.

Overwatch, for me at least, is one of those generational masterpiece games. I cannot fucking stop playing it, and I am usually the king of burning out on a game, not this one. It's easily my GOTY.

I wonder how many people saying overwatch have played team fortress? I've been playing team fortress since the nineties and I look at overwatch and think it's cool but certainly not revolutionary or GOTY material. I see a very polished game with additional classes lacking maps and game modes. I would argue focus from blizzard needs to be on maps and modes as their are too many classes already. Support has been very poor IMO for the amount of money it's likely generated through sales and crates when you look at launch content.

Same. Feel the same for Uncharted 4 as well.I'd go with any of these before Uncharted or Overwatch:

DOOM
Titanfall 2
Gears 4
Dark Souls 3
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Something tells me that FF15 will be high on my list as well.

I'm not gonna say OW doesn't deserve it, But I hope Uncharted 4 wins.

I personally don't understand the need for this thread to highlight a game needing an award over another.

It's not GOTY material but it sure is waifu material.

Lol, here we are fighting about which game should win GOTY when ND, Id and Blizzard are most likely laughing it up with their piles of previous GOTY awards XD

I played hundreds of hours of TFC in high school. Overwatch doesn't have to be revolutionary, it just has to be the best game I've played this year.

It's okay to take established ideas and polish them up to a mirror sheen and that be enough. It's really not far off at all with what DOOM 2016 did. DOOM takes some of the design sensibilities of 90s shooters, mixes it with the upgrade/progression focus of modern games, a little bit of influence from the Brutal Doom mod, and comes out feeling fresh for it. Overwatch takes a base clearly established by Team Fortress, mixes in a few MOBA elements, throws that Blizzard level of "We have infinite money" polish at it, and also comes out feeling fresh for it.

It's not like most of the indie darlings of this year are revolutionary, either. Stardew Valley is "Harvest Moon made by 1 person", The Witness is Jonathan Blow's take on Myst, INSIDE builds on LIMBO, etc. But they don't have to be revolutionary, they just have to be good.

I mean, yeah. I hate puzzle games and I would still put The Witness above Overwatch and U4 combined.

Before this year, if you asked me would I ever vote a MP only game for GOTY, I'd tell you the possibility of that happening is 1%.

Fact is, I believe that a true GOTY needs to reach heights far beyond just being a game. It has to bring more to the table that makes me want to tell people that aren't gamers, "You need to see this game and see what games can be." Bioshock is a great example of this. It was practically art.

It's hard to do that without a single-player narrative. But OW is that once a generation game. Yes, it's MP only, but Blizzard created a universe that gamers instantly loved. The external media, fan fiction, the shorts, comics, etc all flush out something bigger than the game itself. Blizzard created something that I wasn't sure was possible...a MP-only game that was an instant force in the gaming universe and gained huge popularity. I think the competition to grow large, dedicated fan bases to a MP-only game for extended periods of time is very difficult. People don't leave Dota, CS:GO, LoL easily. How many have tried and failed where OW succeeded?

For those reasons, this year I would give it to OW.

My second choice is Doom. Doom did something no one expected... brought back a classic that PLAYED like people wanted it to but with modern sensibilities. It's an awesome success story... and as an old gamer, it just makes me feel good. It's pure FPS joy to play it.

For me personally, Overwatch is a historical landmark. I've loved plenty of shooter games, but none of them have ever made me love their multiplayer. The closest was Halo, but it's more because I wanted to love the complete package of Halo, when the singleplayer campaigns have what largely resonated with me.

Overwatch is literally the only multiplayer that I've ever become so obsessed with that I come back to it. I currently have more than a hundred hours into it, and I don't see myself stopping soon. It is literally preventing me from playing other games I might enjoy, Titanfall 2 being one of them. I have it, and want to finish the campaign, but Overwatch is in my PS4, and I always end up thinking "Just one match before I play it" and it never ends up being just one.

I feel nearly the same as this. Last mp game I played like this was MW2. Blizzard really did knock it out the park. Never played a game like it to be honest.

Yes. It's pure meh. Possibly the worst pacing i've come across in a game. It constantly managed to make me bored, despite plenty of the game actually being very good.

I'm not sure "hate" is the right word since graphics and core gunplay have been positively received, it's the pacing, tone and writing that have drawn a lot of criticism. I personally feel that ND didn't do enough to evolve the formula and doubled down more on some of the worst aspects of the series.

Yeah, I'd agree that the pacing was a little off. Still, the hyperbole being spewed from a lot of GAF in this thread was surprising to me.

I'm surprised people love Overwatch so much. I guess it's because I play solo and find unlocking loot crates a chore (haven't tried since the arcade update which I hear unlocks them faster with better dailies to get exp rewards more than one way.

I didn't even realize GAF had a problem with it? It was fucking brilliant. Standards here have been getting ridiculous to the point that nothing is ever good enough anymore.

Meh, a lot of people on here just start hating on a game series when it becomes really popular. They think it makes them edgy or something.

That's not what's happened with Uncharted 4. It has some serious pacing issues, boring story and just overstays its welcome with it's length.

Uncharted 4 is brilliant though. It's an underrated game.

Underrated how? Because a few people dislike it and even fewer shipost incoherently about it? If anything, the amount of sensitivity and nonsensical defensiveness of its main fanbase make it a fun game to mock, but I fail to see anyway how a 93 metacritiqued and runaway favorite for the Pope Awards is anything close to underrated.

So far I would probably put Doom, Inside, Pokemon Sun, XCOM2, SMT4:A and Paper Mario Color Splash as my GOTY candidates (with stuff like Oxenfree as an Honorable mention) above either game but if I had to pick between the two, it would probably be Overwatch since I enjoy its mechanics significantly more than Uncharted and does pretty well at what it sets out to do while Uncharted doesn't succeed as much.

I haven't played Uncharted 4 (not into either Uncharted or the new Tomb Raider, sorry guys) specifically so I won't judge that, but I played many games worthy of a GOTY award.

Forza Horizon 3, which is absolutely stunning both in graphics and gameplay (and I'm not even a racing fan)
Doom, which is a fantastic mix of old school and new school shooters (that subpar mp ruins it though)
Titanfall 2, an incredible ride in singleplayer and a frenetic but still great multiplayer (I liked the first one more though :( )
Dishonored 2, the best more of the same around (how can people have too much Dishonored? come on!)
Rainbow Six Siege (released late last year so it didn't count for most awards), AKA "how to make a more-strategier
pls forgive me
game not unfun"

And I haven't even touched games like Hitman or The Witness

EDIT: forgot Pokemon but I'm not far enough to judge it, but I'm loving it

Shit U4 probably won't make my top 5.

Titanfall
Doom
Inside
Firewatch
The Witness
Forza

That's a top6 though m8

As a big Uncharted fan and general Blizzard skeptic, I agree that Overwatch is clearly a superior game...

...but GOTY? The last major contender isn't out yet, folks.

Overwatch will probably my GOTY, although its not perfect it is still played regularly like so many Blizzard games. Never thought they'd make anything work that isn't Warcraft/Diablo/Starcraft... but here we are.

Doom and Dark Souls 3 would round out my top 3 currently.
