I want to enjoy Silent Hill 2, but it is too fucking scary for me

I have been a pussy, the maximum horror I could ever take was the chalice dungeon in Bloodborne.

I dropped Resident Evil 7 as it frightened the shit out of me. I beat RE8, but I had to watch a full walkthrough for house beneviento before I started playing that session.

Bought Silent Hill 2 on a whim during Black Friday, it doesn't look terrifying at all right, monsters just from guy's fried mind.

I started playing, went through the foggy and dilapidated town, vibe is great. Now I am at the apartment, oh gosh here goes my suffering.

A fucking useless flashlight that couldn't illuminate shit two feet from you, a fucking broken ass radio that is supposed to alert me only makes me more panicky whenever it begun to rustle. Literally I was nonstop screaming "holy crap" every time I opened a door and jump scared by a flesh bag bitch with high heels. And when I reached the end the corridor, the dimming light cast on the fucking triangle thing behind the bars, my pants wet.

Fuck, I should never had this overconfidence that I could beat a horror game.

Ridicule me however you like, but now recommend me some streamers who also shit their pants when playing the game so I can recover.

Game is insanely good on the horror side. As someone who didn't play the original, I'm shitting myself playing the remake, but I'm loving every second of it.

This game with an headset is a fucking horror masterpiece.

When you switch to the other side, game gets even more tense and scarier.

Haven’t played the remake yet but it looks terrifying. The original scared the shit out of me.

I’m a big wimp even with Elden Ring etc. Resident Evil makes my heart race.

Stop running from your fear and embrace it instead. Allow yourself to be frightened, then look forward to the next time you get frightened. Tell yourself it's not scary enough, you want the game to do it's worse. You WANT to be afraid. You want to feel your heart pounding. You want that adrenaline rush. Because it makes you feel alive. Let your fear eventually mold you into something stronger, until eventually you become something different entirely. And the only thing they fear is you.

Oh, also, depending on the game, I also substitute the soundtrack

Sticking on the Doom soundtrack for instance makes you feel much more badass and ready to run and gun then some creepy music does

Rip & tear and BFG division have helped me get through some spots before 😅

Hey when I was 6 years old, Dr Who & The Daleks used to scare me such that I'd hide behind the couch. Even now though, I'm not a fan of horror movies. But give me a decent means of defending myself and I'll enjoy horror games. Really liked Dead Space and loved RE8.

Get it on PC. For my second playthrough I made the flashlight illuminate 3 times as far with a wider beam and no black spot in the middle, unlimited ammo to go buckshot wild, etc.

If RE7 is too scary, sorry to say SH2 isn't doable (or at least it'll be super rough). SH2 has to be one of the scariest AAA games I've ever played.

If you really want to push through to enjoy it, IMO watch a few combat/speedrun videos to see the patterns each enemy has and how pros beat them. Also turn the combat difficulty all the way down. Most horror games lose their edge if you don't really fear the enemies. There's no shame in making it easier to enjoy the story/atmosphere. You just have to give yourself that confidence in your ability to handle anything the game throws at you.

Also consider playing the original game first. IMO it's not as scary (it's actually the least scary of the original 4). That way you'll know what to expect as far as road mapping the area sequences.

I also loved visage.

I like psychological horrors more than action horror games
While it isn't as graphically impressive as the aforementioned titles. Check out this new indie:

It's a game within a game. Basically your character is playing a cursed ps1 resident evil clone (in FPS perspective) and it bleeds into your life.

Confront your fears and play RE 7 iin VR.

Nah I get what your saying. I've played through a lot in VR and it's not so much playing them, it's when you fall asleep and dream about it that's fucked up.

I fall asleep sometimes with the TV on and if ghost shows come on I'll wake up freaked out. Maybe I should fall asleep to porn.

Here's a tip though. Turn down the audio to where you can barely hear it. You'd be surprised how much scarier audio makes something.

This reminded me of when I was going through that haunted mansion in Vampire The Masquerade for the first time.

Shit was scary at first then I bumped the brightness up and it became "where are the ghosts i wanna see them".

I don't blame you at all. I'm a total Horror nerd. I've seen a million flicks, play mostly Horror themed games and what not. Silent Hill 2 is legitimately the most oppressive and scary-ass experience I've had in any medium.

The craziest part is that it just keeps escalating as the game goes on. You keep being put in scenarios that make whatever came before feel like mild in comparison.

Play it at night, alone in a dark room. Make sure you start around 2am and wear headphones with the volume at max.

Optional but not necessary: Box of tissues and/or adult size diapers and a pacifier.

And no the pacifier is not to suck on. Its to plug the rear in case of uncontrollable slippages.

At GAF we don't tolerate pussyism

Happy gaming 👍

Well everything isn't for everyone.

I've no problem with scary games I play them since I'm a child so it's ok but for exemple I want to like 4X games, but there's too much to read and it's too slow, everytime I try I give up after a couple of hours.

If you don't feel any pleasure playing those... Just don't.

What makes that I'm not scared of any games or movies is that even though I can get really immersed in what I play, I'm like 100% of time aware that none of this is happening in real, that it's in a screen.

Don’t feel bad, I was too spooked by the original Silent Hill 2 on the PS2 and chickened out after 1 hour, and never touched the series again.

I find the easiest way to tackle a horror game is to just let yourself get killed a few times, till you get desensitized. I found the first hour of RE7 scary, but after getting killed by Jack a few times on purpose I kind of stopped giving a fuck.

That said, you crazy fuckers who can play that game in VR? Fuuuuuuck that. I prefer my heart to be inside my chest.

Well folk can ridicule me too, as SH triggers my fear gene like little else, it's why they are such classics.

I've played games for 40 years, and the first two Silent Hills are the pinnacle of horror, the gaming equivalent of Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Alien, even in their original forms on a 14" CRT. I think it's a lot to do with the audio design, it's no coincidence you mention the radio... the other thing is the sirens.

Have to say, Alan Wake 2 comes pretty close, I enjoyed the hell out of that, while absolutely saying 'never again' after I finished.

OP, while I personally dropped the remake because of my nostalgia for the original it's really awesome to hear that you have the same experience for the game I did years ago and that just tells me Bloober understood the assignment. Keep going, Silent Hill 2 has a particular style that forces you to keep going into the abyss of darkness, DON'T. STOP.

It’s the first gaming experience since PT where I actually dreaded coming home from work to play it. Like I didn’t want to, but obviously had to to see it through. And I really fucking hated it. For me it was extremely draining psychologically and in some sensory ways 😅

…But I loved it. And that’s the highest compliment I can give it. It’s my GOTY 2024.

Can’t wait to replay who knows when 🙂

Do my hack trick... Play normally, eliminate enemies but when you are in critical health, save the game... And restarting again improves your health a little.

So I use this trick and I have 3 syringes and 8 health bottles.
