[IGN First] Final Fantasy XV combat gameplay

Just watched today... combat needs big changes to become good.
It's already pretty good in the Platinum Demo if you put in some effort to learn the system. And that is a pretty barebones version of the overall system so the full game should offer even more to tinker with.

The only bigger problems it has are performance (they need to get it to perfect or near-perfect 30fps & tighten the feel of some actions) and the fact that it isn't quite like any actiony combat system in existence, so there's a learning curve there. It takes some influence from KH with it flashiness & aerial combat, adds some almost Dark Souls like style to the usage of certain weapons and then wraps a totally new kind of control system around it that can be a bit hard to get used to if you expect it to play like the action RPGs that you are used to playing. You have to have certain level of open-mindedness to not reject it straight away. Admittedly the game would probably have been better off if they had done a more traditional combat system, but mostly just because people would have easier time to get into it, not because the current system is considerably worse in functionality & total trash. Just requires some time to click.

yea I can see one of the first thing Tabata did when he took over was making kingsglave..

Considering that's likely when they decided no more World of the Versus Epic/bunch of story rewrites because of that, yeah. Maybe someone can ask him at E3.

The E3 2013 trailer still showed scenes that made it seem like the invasion of Insomnia was supposed to be part of the game & mentioned the whole Versus Epic multi-game thing, so obviously the changes to characters/script caused by trying to cram some kind of version of the thing into one game and thus probably the decision to make the invasion of Insomnia into the Kingsglaive movie were made post-E3 2013.

I imagine maybe they 1) came to the conclusion that they wouldn't have time to make the OG intro in PS4 level quality while also developing the rest of the game in a timely manner (since the intro seemed like something that might be filled with setup, setpieces & all kinds of heavily cinematic shit, so very time-consuming to make), and 2) also didn't want to disappoint fans with completely disregarding the exciting, action-packed invasion that the very first VsXIII trailers already teased, so they came to a decision to rip it out of the game and make it into Kingsglaive movie with a partly altered story to fit the new narrative (taking Noctis out of the city and inserting a few new protagonists we can follow through the chaos).

I was starting to get a bit worried about what had happened to the OG intro, since the timeline of TGS 2014 & beyond trailers didn't quite add up to what we knew of its timing, though they still showed Insomnia and its magic barrier so obviously it wasn't completely removed from the story.

The movie is cool and all but I still think it's pretty lame the actual invasion of Insomnia seems to have been cut from the game and turned into Kingsglaive. The bros hearing about it through a freaking newspaper(lol) won't have the same effect as them being there and witnessing it through their own eyes.

That whole World of the Versus epic thing died pretty quickly. The branding was announced at E3 in June but then one month later in July Nomura said they actually didn't have any XV sequels greenlit and no solid plans were even in place, it was just something Nomura wanted to do.

Finaland & FFDream: Nomura-san can we imagine that you’ll work on Final Fantasy XV-2 just after finishing the first one?

Tetsuya Nomura: Obviously we haven’t decided yet. We don’t have any concrete plan for a future sequel of FFXV, it would be good if we could do that but we can’t announce it or say anything into detail for the moment so wait for future informations.

In fact, at E3 2013 they had just merged the engine team with the XV team and hadn't even decided yet if the game would be full open world. It seems a lot of the decisions just weren't finalized at all by then. Seems Tabata took an initiative within the next six months to finally get things going and to set solid plans into place, thus XV sort of had a new compilation "epic" of sorts with the movie and the game.

Sure, I'm a bit disappointed too, but I was afraid it had been cut completely and we would never see it in full when we saw Noctis driving outside Insomnia/Lucis during the time of the peace signings. If we can't get a playable version, at least we get to see what happens.

I'll still never heal from them cutting the Noctis in a suit in the car CGI scene.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I want a game based on the entire idea of that CG scene. That really looked like a fantasy based on reality.

Both Versus XIII and FFXV look like totally different games compared to it, even if Versus had that CG scene.

I wasn't aware that sequence from the e3 2013 trailer got cut. That really bums me out...that completely sold me on the game at the time lol. I guess it was too crazy to be true though.

No, the sequence from E3 2013 is in the game lol.
