The hype for PlayStation 3 is already there. Talk to any developer and you'll get a range of comments, from "the system eclipses Xenon" to "it's three and a half times more powerful." Publishers are on board in a big way. Everyone is making Xenon and PS3 games. And Sony's brand name has never been better.

There's no point in releasing it now. Not when PlayStation 2 is doing just fine.

An added six months to a year ensures that PlayStation 3 will not only be significantly more powerful than Xenon -- which it clearly is -- but also able to play high-definition Blu-ray movies out of the box, all with a cheaper price tag than would have been possible this year.

Anyways, I'll reserve judgement till we see some titles up and running. But imagine Sony fans having the userbase and graphics edge? Xbot am cry.
 
Though the "3.5 times" stuff hasn't been brought up, isn't it fairly well known by now that the PS3 is going to be more powerful than the Xenon? It's going to be weird, but aside from an actual number being applied, this isn't all that shocking.

This reminds me when I use to hear Acclaim's PR guys saying: We are only using 15% of the system. No, you are using 100% of what your sorry asses are capable of. More BS, hell, PS3 specs aren't nailed down yet. Developers are fanboys just like us GAF people, nobody is immune to that. I sense this to be the same

The Xbox was significantly more powerful than the PS2 and yet hardware sales leaned toward Sony for a very, very long time (only now is Microsoft remaining on the upswing while the other platforms seem to be continually declining).

If MS can pullout a seamless launch a year ahead of Sony, it might position itself to take the lead and force third-party developers to create games for the lowest common denominator, which now might well be its system. Microsoft probably hopes that will give it the same edge in hardware sales that Sony has always had. And there's still a very, very good chance that the PS3 will not be revolutionarily superior to Xbox 2.

I agree with Ivan in that I don't think the PS3 will be an exceptional leap over the next Xbox. If anything, I think it'll be like the current Xbox versus PS2. Sony's saying greater than 256GFlops of performance from Cell, but Microsoft is saying more than a teraflop in total power from the next Xbox. All hype, yes, and not really comparible, but the point is they'll both be fast as hell.

Come to think of it, is Hell actually fast? I thought things took an eternity there...

Yeah, whatever, we'll just have to see how much of a difference, if any, there is in the real world. :D
 
While it is VERY hard to see how 6 months could make such a big difference, a lot of developers have hinted at this. I really can't see the PS3 being 3 times more powerful myself unless you have to offer the deed to your house in exchange for the console.

Oddly, I haven't heard this from any developer. Generally it's something along the lines of "ridiculously expensive to develop for." If the PS3 really is as advanced and customized as is being hinted at, could be only the really big publishers will be able to take a shot at developing for it without risking oblivion should a title bomb.
 
PS3 is gonna eat Xenon for lunch and then shit it out into extra PSP stock. You dig?

Sho Nuff, if MS uses Fairy Elves then probably. Sony knows better then to use those, they have a long standing relationship with MuuMuu's, offering far more bang for buck then pesky fairy tale creatures. :P
 
if the xenon puts out ONE TERAFLOP, and the ps3 is ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE MORE POWERFUL THAN XENON, then i'm going to use the cell's REVOLUTIONARY GRID COMPUTING to assemble an array of TEN PS3s for ONE PETAFLOP OF COMPUTING POWER. PETA. FLOP.

oh, i'm pretty sure a PETAFLOP is enough RAW COMPUTING POWER that my ps3 array will come into full human or superhuman consciousness, at which point it may very well molest children. but this would be a small price to pay for ridge racer vi at ONE GIGAFRAME PER SECOND.

I need to be excited by PS3 and I need to be excited quickly because I can't stop thinking about Xbox 2 and how sweet Half-Life 2, Halo 3, Elder Scroll IV and a thousand other games are going to look. More importantly, I can't stop thinking about how awesome they're going to look this fall. This fall! The next generation is not far away, but right now it doesn't even seem like the next generation includes Sony and so I don't even think about it.

I'm with Ivan. Once people see what the Xbox 2 is capable of, they're going to move away from the PS2 simply because it looks like so much poop. Hell, most of the time I don't like playing it. Look at Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. That game looked like ass. I don't care what you say about the visual style, the PS2 just didn't have the power to make it a good looking game. When players see the difference between the PS2 and Xbox "somethinerother" they're going to start frowning at their old favorite and want something new.

What I hear from developers is generally "We don't know jack squat about PS3. It would be nice if Sony got off its ass so we have a halfway decent chance of producing something for it sometime this decade."

Differences in technical visuals of current gen consoles never bothered me much, and if anything, they are interesting to observe and compare. I suspect the same will hold true with next gen consoles. Therefore, I fully support Microsoft's decision in coming out first and being least powerful. Someone has to do it, so it might as well be them. After all, tech prowess should be enjoyed relative to hardware. For example, I still get incredibly impressed by what demo programmers can pull out on C64 or Amiga.

Rhindle, I don't know what devs you've been talking to, but PS3 alpha devkits are apparently out and in hands of selected devs.

This is some of the best news ever if true. Most of the awesome japanese video game devs will make games just for Playstation (like they are now). It will be great if the have really awesome hardware to do this for.



And can you all just imagine what the next grand theft auto will look like? I bet DMA is working on it now! Awesome!!!!!

In case you weren't just being facetious :P, it isn't really much of a paralel.

PS2 CPU Mhz = 0.5 * XBox CPU Mhz
PS2 CPU ~ 6GFlop = XBox CPU + XBox VertexShader ~ 6GFlops

PS3 CPU Mhz = 1.33 * Xenon CPU Mhz
Xenon CPU + Xenon GPU shaders > 256GFlops ;)

There could be one rather important paralel though - mainmemory, if it ends up 256 : 512.
 
PS2 was good this gen, but not good to the point it should have the userbase lead it has. This kind of hype isn't good at all....

I really don't wanna support the launch hype train if they're gonna gain another lead like that again. Xenon then Revolution for me.

Those quotes from EGM, from their developer sources stating the PS3 was far more powerful than the XBox 2 are most likely legit.

Sony is going all out.
