Sorry to say but if their recent Ranking the Final Fantasy Games list is anything to go by, I wouldn't hold your breath...

Oh yeah, thats a good point. I remember Justin Davis posting in the thread about that list. He was legit surprised to see so many people defend VIII, because they ranked it lower than XIII. I was just annoyed that they described it wrong,

'What starts as a simple love story quickly evolves into a tale of conflict, rivalry, and the fate of the world'.

Nope! It starts out as a tale of rivalry and conflict before evolving into a love story. Maybe i'm being fussy but its my favourite game and I can't help it.

Yeah I've thought of putting lists together too but always found it's an extraordinarily hard effort to narrow down the best, even making a top 10. I have, however, been certain of 2 games for a very long time in my personal rankings.

1) Valkyrie Profile
2) Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

Some people have been surprised I pick Valkyrie Profile as my favorite - Most generally rate it between 8-9 (there's not much of a curve though! most people who play it like it). It hits everything for me, and its few shortcomings... are not that significant. Maybe it's a little too different for most people? I don't know.

Nocturne comes as no surprise to anyone who's played it. It regularly populates top 10 lists and though I rarely see it mentioned (it just doesn't have as much notoriety as the big, big titles), I... don't think I've ever seen it in a personal list of favorite RPGs and not be in top 10. I've played... 7? games from the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona libraries, and I can confidently say Nocturne is the best. It's not even a contest.

I basically try to look at these kind of lists as being in no particular order. Here's 100 RPGs that are real good! That way I don't have to complain about placements too much.

Unless I agree with the placements, then I will tell everyone how much it agrees with my personal list. Obviously.

When combat takes up so much of any given RPG, having a shitty battle system with bad AI and a progression mechanic tied to fighting things over and over really hurts the game.

NNK2 looks like it fixes a lot of this, but NNK1 is irredeemable IMO.

I respect the viewpoint, but story and characters trump all for me in an RPG. When I look at my favorite RPGs, FF VI, Witcher 3, Suikoden 3 and 5, none have particularly good battle systems (all better than NNK though). It's the characters and their journey that do it for me. The story in NNK falters at points, but the journey is great.

Skies of Arcadia,The Breath of Fires, even FFIX I don't think would be particularly fondly remembered if people were too hung up on just the poor combat in rpgs

Yeah, true. Lots of the classics have clunky or forgettable battle systems. And if you look at the popularity of something like Skyrim, apparently lots of folks are happy with a game with no meaningful characterization and a horrible battle system as long as they get a sense of adventure from it.

Oh, don't get me wrong. Great story and characters can make up for a lot, but if the combat is actively making me enjoy playing less, as NNK's did, nothing can fix that. I'm perfectly willing to tolerate bland combat for a great story and characters (as I did for decades of FF and DQ).

I hear you. I eventually found NNK's system manageably bland (stuck with puss in boots throughout, so limited familiar switching, and I grew to like the magic system), but I won't try to defend this piece of the game.

Yuuup! Exactly.

Divinity and Pillars being at the bottom ruffles my feathers. Especially with DA:I being on that list.

I had no idea people were so attached to either game. They both felt like some really cool ideas waiting to be put in more complete, robust titles. And it appears that will happen in the sequels, so that's cool.

I don't have high hopes for this list getting better when Final Fantasy VII is in the middle of the list. Also Front Mission 3 is way too low. :(

My guess is FF VIII and X will be excluded even though they deserve to be on the list far more than Final Fantasy does.

FF7 roughly 51 spots too low, but I'm sure they're anticipating tons of salt followed by tons of "haha, finally an honest ranking for an overrated game" today.

I don't mind. It's just a list, anyway, and if I pray to my Cloud Strife shrine for forgiveness, Meteor won't kill us all for our sins.

Do you hear me, IGN guy who posted in this thread yesterday saying FF7 isn't good? You have no idea if I'm serious! You don't know where I've been, Lou! You don't know where I've been!

(Also, realtalk, FFX will absolutely be on the list, as will FFVI.)

They won't be on the list although to be fair the GI one did have FFX quite high up

I don't see a lot of people rank X over VII so I would be surprised if X made it on the list now.

Honestly, with choices like Legend Of Dragoon and Final Fantasy being on the list and if VIII and X don't make it on, it's just not a very good ranking list and I say this as someone who likes LoD. It's actually crazy that LoD is ranked higher than KHII and Chrono Cross.

Agreed. Chrono Cross is my favorite RPG and I am pleased it made the list.

I only just saw that Ness is on the banner, so that can only mean good things.

Super Mario RPG, Xenoblade and Tales of Symphonia making it in is pretty rad.

FFX is just as popular as VII in most of the net circles I haunt. It was the "VII experience" for a bunch of folks just a few years younger than myself.

FFVI rounds out the trio, with a large following of dedicated fans always quick to express how underrated it is. xD

I think IV through XII all have their fair share of hardcore defenders, though, really. It's just that VI, VII, and X seem to have transcended fandom the most, with lots of references outside the hardcore. Maybe VIII, too, really.

Oh don't get me wrong, X is one of the most popular entries by far. I'm just saying it's rare to see it actually ranked over VII so I would be shocked if it was. Normally it's a battle between VI and VII with sometimes IX randomly stepping it but that's more online.

I liked the other list because it included dragons dogma. If this list does not include it, it will be proven inferior.

My guess for their top 5 rpgs are
Skyrim
Dark Souls
Final Fantasy 6
Chrono Trigger
Mass Effect 2

Some of these are a little risky. Final Fantasy 6 could be replaced with Final Fantasy 7 and Dark Souls could be replaced with Bloodborne. I honestly don't believe anyone that currently works at ign likes Dark Souls that much but the game has become one of those must haves for a lists like these.
I'm excited to see how well I did at guessing.

These new choices give me little hope that XV will be included on the list and that makes me sad. Mostly because I don't actually believe that Final Fantasy I is better than the majority of other FF games. It helped Square in its time of need and started a major franchise, but I sincerely don't believe it should be in the top 100.

FFVII being that low doesn't help. I know everyone likes to say nowadays that it's "overrated", but I am getting the impression that so many people are saying it is overrated that it's now gone full circle and is now "underrated", and FFVI, strangely enough, is now overrated. (Please don't kill me)

Persona 3 over Persona 5, though, is justice.

I wonder if they'll rank Persona 2 but with how this list is going I doubt it.

Persona 4 hasn't been ranked yet so I have a feeling it will be in top 5. Kind of sad to see Persona 5 in the middle.

With you. :p

Although I'd argue that the pinnacle of "FF7 is soooo overrated" was probably ~2002-03. Folks who didn't care for the game as much got so tired of the five years of constant fanfics and fan art clouding up their browsers and there was some serious blowback. By comparison, I think the game's e-reception is sterling in 2017, hahaha.

I'm officially boycotting IGN until the day I die if Hoshigami Blue Earth isn't at LEAST in the top 3.

Realistically, this entire list should just be Hoshigami Blue Earth repeated 100 times, but I understand that not everybody can live in the 4th dimension like I do.

It's unarguably the greatest piece of fiction ever crafted by human (and non-human) hands.

The top 5 will be

Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Bethesda RPG
Souls game
Bioware RPG

For shame IGN, Dragon Age Origins, Xenoblade and Persona 5 far too low.

Persona 3 was a shit RPG, boring as hell.
