Persona 5 as low as that, pah! I can't wait to see what tripe they put in the top 40.

Glad Grandia II & Skies of Arcadia made the list, although - again, too low.

Yeah I'm gonna stop reading this list now. I will be back for top 10 though because I fully expect it to be a shitshow with how this portion of the list looks.

SMTIV is my favourite game in the series. Best OST for sure. But no other game evoked the same level of feeling in terms of exploring Tokyo.

Nocturne would be superior though if it wasn't held back by some of the less than polished aspect that have been improved on in future games. SMTIV is extremely polished.

I liked SMT4 but holy crap the characters are seriously terrible. You might as well control a party of cardboard cutouts.

The only thing i remembered about them was that the girl liked manga.

I mean it's a mainline SMT game. Characters are basically symbols of ideology. Devil Survivor is the only time they've actually tried making them seem human. I like the abstractness of the characters because I think it fits in a world of demons and mythology but I can see how they are not to the taste of everyone though.

Okay, I'll play. The games shuffle around in rank a lot depending on my mood that day, but these are all locked down top 20 and are what I'd currently consider my top 10:

10 - World of Warcraft
9 - Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
8 - Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn / Heavensward
7 - Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
6 - Persona 3
5 - Final Fantasy VII
4 - Mother 3
3 - Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars
2 - Chrono Trigger
1 - Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Despite that, I still found the characters in SMT4 to be written worse than say, those in Strange Journey. Jimenez in particular.

Then SMT4:A jumps off a cliff.

Love Jimenez! And even Zelenin. The main cast in SJ is pretty strong. But SJ has like 3 or so characters. SMTIV has a much more diverse overall cast that makes up for the somewhat lacking main cast, so I think that made up for it a bit. Nozomi >>

Apocalypse is pretty terrible with that and I def hope is not an indication of how characters will be handled in the future. SMT does not need to be like Persona ffs.

I understand that. I'm saying that their writing is even more flat compared to others in the series.

Final Fantasy VII at 52, really? IGN becoming "gaming-hipsters" too I see: If it's too popular or mainstream, then it's bad.

The impact FF7 had on the industry -not just RPGs- was immense. And yes, the game still holds up and is the best FF ever made (I love you 6 and 9, but 7 will always be that special one).

I don't think it's that simple. Watch Skyrim, the very definition of mainstream RPG, be in the top ten.

Yep, for such an influential game it's far too low. As much as I love FF6, it didn't have the industry-wide impact 7 did. And if industry impact isn't a factor in this list... then why haven't WoW and Skyrim popped up yet?

I'm fine with WoW and Skyrim being in the top 10 of anyone's list, but it's weird if FF7 isn't somewhere close by too.

Lmfao. Not only did they include Persona 3, but they ranked it above 5. I like this list IGN.. and take I back what I said. In the perfect world it would be above 4 as well, but I'll take it. Also not putting FFVII in the top 50, I approve. Hopefully either V, VI or IX make the top 10

See this is the attitude that the guys writing the list clearly had.

I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, because everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, for a long time the game was considered one of the, if not the best game ever. It was hotly contested between that and Ocarina. In popular polls its often still up there. The idea that it has aged that badly is crazy as the core gameplay is still solid, its just the graphics that look poor.

Again I'm not saying that's right, but for it to shift so far down is clearly the view of someone who thinks the game is overrated and wants everyone to know it.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing and 7 is old enough for a newer generation to see it without being blinded by it. It's just not that great of a game, i.e. the materia system makes all the character really samey, the game loves shoving really bad minigames at you way too much, etc.

Chrono Cross and Xenoblade are on the list, so Nier has to be. It would just be a joke to say a RPG with a mess of a story like Chrono Cross would be better than any RPG with a good story. Let alone one that had a amazing story.

Nier had more going for it than music and looking pretty.
