Directly to you.

Edited my post because lacked an important word =P

? I am a very BIG fan of both franchises that trailed I saw appealed to me in a lot of ways tbh.

... the only thing I dread about this game is that the conversation in the forums are going to devolve in the typical trash that littered the FE: Awakening threads.

Not saying it didn't appeal to some fans of those series, but the reasons are probably unrelated to why you're interested in SMT and FE in the first place. The game doesn't have to be like SMT or FE to be good, not at all. But had this not been labeled so in the first place, I personally never would have payed attention to this game at all, at least not yet. It's not even being made by people associated with either of the two mainline franchises, at least as far as we know.

It's not really a problem with the game as much as it is a slow realization that this game probably isn't for me, unless there's something majorly appealing in future trailers.

Believe it or not, as lame as it was, it wasn't really a major problem with me. That appears to be a failed transformation, judging by the other character's reactions. Alone, it could play as a silly joke.

For me, it was more the overall focus on this kind of stuff that put me off. One thing isn't going to bother me, but when I keep seeing it repeated, in the initial trailer nonetheless, it's going to put a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, the series has always had pandering, but it's kind of been off to the side. Even then, this is hardly the reason for my disappointment so far. Just seems weird to me to take two franchises and then fail to appeal to either in your first trailer. I get it, they want the wider audience, which I'm fine with.... but it's an odd strategy. I have no doubt they'll reveal more of the FE elements as we move forward, but starting this way was a good way to make someone like me uninterested.

It's like, had this not been called SMTxFE, would I have cared about this trailer at all? Most likely not.

Personally, I'm right in the same boat. As a fan of both franchises, the modern day JPop isn't exactly what I expected or wanted. I have a sliver of curiosity though as to what this game might end up as, but my expectations are low until we see more.

I include it. Point is, so far, this game isn't really focusing on attracting FE/SMT fans.

Oh no, I bet a lot of modern (read: Awakening) FE fans will be pleased by the recent development.

There isn't much for SMT fans, but then again, it seems aimed at those who think SMT is a spin-off of Persona.

I guess it's just that what we know about this game doesn't really extend past a superficial understanding of it from what we've seen in the trailer, so it's difficult to judge what the "Fire Emblem" and "Shin Megami Tensei" elements in this game mean for it on a fundamental level. One would hope that they're not disparate concepts that they tied together only superficially just for marketing purposes, to attract fans of both series without those ties actually being meaningful.

The way Hitoshi Yamagami spoke of it back in 2013, there was hopefully a lot of thought put behind the collaboration.

Guilty of that. From my point of view, this is exactly the case. I never played the previous games of the FE series but I loved Awakening and look forward to the sequel. I never played any SMTs or Personas either, but this doesn't really make it harder for me to anticipate SMT x FE. The trailer really clicked on me and I'm not even a fan of JPop or idols.

I like the whole modern setting and the various references on FE are really fitting. The characters so far are, at least, fine and generally the game seems to be nice. We haven't seen much tbh but the first trailer was already better than what expected when I heard of the crossover. I doubt I'm the only one that never played a SMT, liked Awakening and is excited about this game.

My only fear is its gameplay. I don't expect a game with complicated mechanics but I hope it will have a depth. Many classes, maybe a system like pairing based on social bonds, equipment with a crafting system, various paths(mage, warrior etc) for the protagonist.

This game looks better and better. Its a Shin Megami game with Fire Emblem characters in a present day setting. What more could I ask for! All the designs look good accept the main characters outfit and the chick with the thong hanging out is a bit much, other than that, I cant wait and glad I own a WiiU now as its now becoming the go to JRPG home console this gen it seems.

Really? Out of everything that's been shown so far, the one aspect of the game that I'm sure will be great is the gameplay. What was shown in the trailer seemed fascinating, and the people behind the game are knowledgeable when it comes to good combat systems, too.

Well, the thing about it is that what's been shown doesn't really evoke much about the "Shin Megami Tensei" part yet.

I think its an odd sign of the times with what sells unfortunately...

School setting + "idols" = $$$$$$$444444444 D:

I just hope the game has a lot of content and a good battle system. As long as there is that I should be happy with it. Otherwise literally the only game Ill be owning on the WiiU is Xenoblade X. Outside from that and maybe Bayonetta 2 / Fatal Frame: Oracle of the Sodden Raven there is nothing else that I really give a shit about with the console gamewise. :D

Given that many FE fans have been drawn into the modern games for the girls and that Devil Survivor and Persona have had a lot of success with the same stuff, I'd say it is focusing on attracting modern fans of those franchises. Maybe not you or other old school fans specifically, but you probably aren't the majority of the fanbase anymore.

Neither of these are Shin Megami Tensei. It's not being pedantic. Go look at the reveal trailer for this game and you'll notice that there are no Devil Survivor or Persona characters shown at all.

I hope you're right as I didn't really understood much. I'm not even sure if it's turn based or an SRPG.

Id have to say that is very true. Wasnt there an interview with the games producer? where he was surprised for example how much love Tharja got even to the point where she got a figure made?

Its generally what happens when a title hits larger numbers once stepping away from the standard design / formula. From there to keep said numbers / new fanbase they follow the same formula from where the title took off sales wise.

Maybe not officially, but its pretty clear this game is taking more inspiration from Devil Survivor and Persona than the mainline series... its even the same team that did Devil Survivor working on it. If you go into it expecting it to be closer to those two series from the SMT side I think you'd enjoy it more.

I'm not putting any personal weight here, I'm talking about what you were replying to:

From how this game was announced, to what's been discussed about it, to what's been shown in that trailer, I think it's understandable to see how what Lunar15 is saying is true. Saying "Persona" or "Devil Survivor" fans is something different.

I hope you're right as I didn't really understood much. I'm not even sure if it's turn based or an SRPG.

What my take on it is from the trailer is more along the lines of a SMT game where you go running around in dungeons and random battles occur which are the standard turnbased style of combat vs it being an SRPG.

I think the SRPG while not on the same platform will be Fire Emblem if and this will be the "standard" JRPG type of design.

Could be totally wrong, but thats what it looked like from the footage shown.

Not exactly true.

I hope you're right as I didn't really understood much. I'm not even sure if it's turn based or an SRPG.

The gameplay will be more traditional JRPG from what we can tell with battles having a time gauge (so a form of turn-based) and not SRPG. But yeah, I have complete faith the gameplay will be great, just hope the world and narrative has a more serious/darker tone at some point.

Those are just semantics. Persona and Devil Survivor are connected enough to the series that people consider themselves SMT fans if they like those series. They share the same demon models, many of the same themes and have even been tagged with the SMT name in the past.

Then why did the announcement trailer just show mainline SMT characters?

To be fair, the title no longer includes SMT in it, so I think it's fair to say that we can consider this like any other SMT spinoff. There will be SMT elements, but like persona, it doesn't have to connect to any specific SMT archetypes.

I've got no issues with that, and I don't think they're being misleading at this point.

Honestly, if the game is good, it's good. Even if the game had the strongest connections to SMT and FE, I'd still wait to see how it played to determine if I was interested or not. I'm going to grant this the same respect, but not being worked on by either of the teams I expected is definitely going to set my hype back a bit. I'm not much of a fan of Devil Survivor, but I guess it's still to be determined who the actual team is working under that director. My disappointment so far has stemmed more from that than any of the j-pop idol setting.

There's a lot of "wait and see's" left here.

Eh, as long as they're keeping the tentative English title of "Shin Megami Tensei & Fire Emblem Crossover Project," it's still an outstanding point to be looked at.

The announcement trailer might have been a bit disingenuous, but it seems like they've completely changed the nature of what the game was supposed to be about since then... they just used some random character art of old games instead of showing us anything that was part of this game to get peopled hyped. If there was an actual game trailer that showed mainline SMT characters and was later changed, and not just old character art, I'd understand being upset but this is no different from many games which use old assets when announcing a brand new game before they have solid info to give people.

Well, yeah at this point we can only assume it's going to have themes and some hints of SMT here and there (like attack icons and Jack Frost), but even the website has a copyright for Fire Emblem on it at the bottom and nothing for SMT.

I got into FE with FEA though I'm now looking through some of the older games.
I got into the SMT series with SMT4 and Devil Survivor 1 and then P4G and P3P. While I prefer the presentation of P4G, I like SMT4 a bit better.
Really, I just like "anime" style games so I would've been fine with whatever direction this game took place.

I've been playing Fire Emblem since 2003 and this trailer is ridiculously hype for me. Fire emblem plus Persona? Yes pleaseeeeeeeeeeee.

So yes, you can be an old Fire Emblem fan and like the look of this.

It was pretty obvious they announced the project too early, but it's perfectly fair to say that showing mainline characters from both franchises and calling it "Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem" was misleading regardless of the lack of original content in that announcement trailer.

To me, that's NOA, not the developers. By changing the japanese name, the developers themselves have stated what this game is.

I never implied otherwise.

Yup, been playing since the first American release and can't even be more excited for this. Folks just not accepting the fact that this is today's modern eastern aesthetic. When the series has been pandering since day 1 to the eastern styles.

lets pretend SMTxFE was canceled and the team moved on to work on this game

At this point the game is just a mashup of everything like they had no idea what to exactly do with FE and SMT so they just threw it all in a pot along with a frag and said fuck it. But the amazing thing was it apparently worked for once.

Watching the trailer pretty much gives off strong vibes of that.

My guess is that the music will be more towards the SMT side of things vs FE.

Yeah, that's true. So far and overall, this evidently seems to be, "new IP starring Fire Emblem with minor Megaten references." Again, though, that's only thus far since we only know of this game on a superficial level.

If that's how the final game turns out, I suppose the initial pitch for it might have indeed been changed, with Atlus going, "Shin Megami Tensei together with Fire Emblem is what [you] want" to Yamagami when he was going around talking to different developers about this project of a Fire Emblem game in the modern, real world.

lol I wish I knew how to use Photoshop, I only used the snipping tool but forgot the deal with it words were in the pic, now it's says IT on my avatar >_>

I have no idea what persona combat is like. I saw some gameplay of SMT IV where it was just first person menu based combat. But this game seems to be like an action rpg based on what I saw.

I can't quite remember where I saw the interview, but yeah, it was something like Yamagami saying "I want to see a Pegasus on the rooftops of Shibuya, and I realized that Atlus was the team for that!" Funny enough, the trailer features that exact shot.

I have a hunch that the SMT and FE labeling prooobably came about because it was at the same exact time that Nintendo was trying to promote SMTIV and FE:A. During the same Direct, they even announced that e-shop promotion where you could get a credit if you bought both games. It was all a way of saying "hey, FE fans, you should be interested in SMT and hey SMT fans, you should get interested in FE!"

They also probably didn't really know what the game was going to be at that point, other than the fact that it would include SMT and FE elements.

Its kind of like persona with it being team 3rd person turn based gameplay. Though they make the progression of turns clearer in this game with that turn bar on the screen to see who is going next and in what order. I'm guessing you'll be able to delay your enemies' turn and keep cycling back to your team's turn if you are able to knock the enemies down by hitting their weakness or something.
