If you want me to ponder why Macs have such grip on technophobic creative type, that's a whole another discussion.

No one wants you to do that.

I'm simply conveying to you why she bought these iMacs for the crew. And not just any iMacs, top of the line iMacs with maximum specs. She is the type that just blindly orders the most expensive as the best tool for the job, regardless of the purpose of the job. And for her, it's Apple or nothing. Phone, tablets, computers, fruit, etc..

What you're conveying is a desire to turn what is at worst managerial incompetence into justification for a preexisting irrational bias. If only she wasn't a delusional technophobe, otherwise known as a Mac user, she would have known how to accommodate poorly designed software! Oh well.

I developed webpages in the 90s and we were targeting multiple browsers way back then.

You're using a really bad business backend webapp - bad when it was new, because there was never a point where targeting IE only was smart- as an excuse for why Mac users are dumb.

If the company should have adapted to this POS to get their job done.. That's one thing. But it sucked, and the company wasn't silly for expecting it to work on Mac. Like most webapps work on Mac.

I guess there's no use here.
Do you have a reading comprehension problem? It never had a problem on a PC running IE.In fact it runs great on PC and IE. It's a specific program written for one company for a specific need, not for mass public consumption. If most of the company workers has PCs, why wouldn't they fucking consolidate and write it for PC and IE?

You keep insisting on looking at this through your web Nazi eyes and it was never made for you!

I hate how Apple just does their own thing and does not follow standards. I use a Linux workstation at work, I have a Windows gaming PC at home and a MBP. Guess which one has the keyboard shortcuts completely different from the other two?

I also hate the fact that they charge really expensive prices for their accessors.

Apple didn't just make that shit up to be different. Those modifiers and shortcuts date back to the 80s when there was no such thing as a "standard". Apple went one way, IBM went another.

Poorly designed software? Name me another software that runs perfectly and is still useful after a decade. You guys, just like my Mac only coworkers WANT this software to be shitty rather than the decision to force Macs into this purpose being shitty.

DELUSIONAL.

I'm still not understanding why this makes Macs awful and their users delusional.

Your company made some bad decisions regarding hardware procurement and software development. That's it.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Yeah ctrl+ and ⌘+ are the same things. Just slightly different locations.

People who have a hard time going back and forth between the two mystify me.

I think you are in the wrong thread.

I don't want it to be shitty. I wish they originally did it correctly so it wouldn't have come up in this thread as such a shitty argument for why Mac users are delusional.

I never said Macs are awful. They are fine machines. I'm just calling Mac users that insist that only Macs are good delusional. But you guys keep making me say things I never said just so that you can have your false outrage.

Hey, if that makes you feel better you are welcome to it.

I think you convinced us all quite well with your example. Mission accomplished.

After this thread I'd feel better if we all switched to Linux. Agreed?

Let's all just be honest. You were never gonna admit such things anyways, no matter how convincing I was to be.

So am I just a bastard that wants to rain on Mac circle jerk parade? Hey, I've been called worse.

But no-one said that. Your company has made two shitty decisions;

1) They bought Macs when the software that was going to be driving them was written for an old Windows-only web browser.

2) They didn't update the software when they knew that IE wasn't going to be an option.

That has nothing to do with Apple or Mac users, yet here you are spilling your bile on them in spite of the fact that every single problem you have is solely to do with the management of the business you work for.

My mind boggles why you thought this was the thread to do that in.

I'm using IE 10 and 11 with it and it works fine.

Why the hell isn't it an option? There are plenty of PC familiar creatives, especially in toy industry that most of the products are for. And AFAIK, they still make and sell PCs and release IE for it.

The discussion was perfectly suited. I read many posts about how Macs are superior to PCs and many other were disputing that. Mine is one of those that dispute that notion.

Now it seems like you have the reading problem.

If you spent that much on a proper windows laptop, it would not only last as long, but also have far superior hardware.

Apple's one big thing, is their being user friendly, but at the very same time locked/closed system.

So, if you spend 2k dollars on a mac book, which lasts 5-6 years before being utter crap(hardware wise it'll be crap a lot sooner), compared to buying a new windows laptop every 2 years for 500 books, the first 2-3 used laptops, you would be able to give to your children, sooner than you probably normally would have given them a laptop, then. And the 3rd and 4th laptop, would be faster in every regard against the mac book.

Now, if you spend 1-2k on a proper Windows laptop, it would not only be state of the art CPU, GPU, SSD, BT, Screen, and Battery wise, it would probably come with other goodies, because the apple premium charge ain't needed, so more stuff to get with it.

Moore's law: computing speed doubles every 18 months.

Apple products are an expensive fashion choice.

Fun fact.: not everyone updates their computers every two years.

Just wanted to add that although I love my RMBP, if I had to switch to Windows based laptops i'd go with Thinkpads. Those things are incredible.

I have the 11e Yoga, which is a Chromebook Thinkpad and it's built like a tank.

Which is why, I also stated that a 1-2k windows laptop would have superior and state of the art hardware, compared to a Mac Book.

The point is that he's spending more money than he needs to, by buying an MBP.

It might have some "state of the art" computer components but I find it hard to believe it would have superior hardware. For some people a computer is more than RAM and CPU.

Got a late 2008 Macbook Pro. Upgraded it to 8GB RAM, SSD drive, OS X Yosemite and it's still going on strong. Aside from a minor surface bruise from an impact years ago, it looks as good as it did the day I got it and I still feel no urge to upgrade despite its age. Can any PC laptop come even remotely close?

Sure. From Windows 7 on, Windows has gotten less and less demanding. Any 2008 laptop will run Windows 10 later this year better than what it originally came with. There are also some very robust laptops such as Thinkpads, which could have easily handled those impacts.

You also get the best customer service and product support in the industry. If you do have an issue you can just take it in to the Apple store. In over 20 years I've only had a problem once with their products. I got a new one without any questions.

Compared to similarly priced business offerings, Apple's customer service isn't all that great. Couple of weeks ago the display of a Macbook Pro of one of my colleagues had some issues and needed to be replaced. Fortunately that was still within one year of purchasing it, but getting it repaired was still quite a hassle. She had to go out of her way to bring the thing in for repairs and then -- repairable as current Macbooks are -- had to wait for a week to get it back (so of course she also had to set up a temporary replacement). With a Thinkpad you get next-day on-site service and the technician would have replaced the screen within minutes.

Why don't you get best of both worlds and go Linux?

inb4 "lol command line black box"

... how is this best of both worlds? You don't get a proper GUI environment on Linux (No, I don't think KDE or Gnome are all that polished), but on OSX, I can't think of anything I really miss on the command line other than a proper package manager (apt >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> macports). Or are you talking price?

So let me get this straight:
Mac users are delusional...
because of an anecdotal experience you had...
where 2013 high end iMacs...
were not compatible...
with a +10 years old software (Firefox rise began that year)...
that was built ad hoc for a browser...
of another OS?

If you're lucky, you can get the latest model for 43% of the price compared to the price with student discount.

By luck, the seller wouldn't know its value well..

The bolded is completely untrue. There's nothing "closed" about OSX at all.

Seriously, why a Pro over an Air?

The real question is: why an Air instead of a Pro ? It's difficult that you absolutely need the difference in weight and battery and the extra money is well spent when you think about the retina display only.

And I use an air as my working computer.

I can't think of anything I really miss on the command line other than a proper package manager (apt >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> macports). Or are you talking price?

Homebrew ?

My Pentium 4 lasted 6 years. There were quad cores out by the time the modem tanked.

How could yours only last 18 months?

I make my living on a Mac Mini. It's great. I boots in less than 10 seconds (dual SSDs fit in that tiny thing), and every program opens instantly. I boot the thing up and I can get to work. Never any time lost on maintainance or troubleshooting.

I won't say it's better than PC, since I haven't properly used a PC in over a decade. I'm just used to Macs, and they work perfectly for me. I'm not gonna risk fucking up my nice workflow by switching to PC just to save a couple hundred dollars.

Apple products have never been about state of the art hardware in their consumer line up. It's always been about putting together the best package of hardware to compliment the software.

To bad Apple changed the Mini so you can no longer do what you did. You can't have a 2nd HD anymore. You can't change the RAM anymore either and they charge $200 for 8 GB. The base model also comes with a ultra low voltage chip designed to increase battery life in a device that doesn't have a battery. This is after selling the old Mini for 2 years without lowering the price. I like Apple products but you can't say they don't screw consumers all the time.

Build quality. My wife for example is quite roughy with equipment so PC laptops didn't last long.

Bought her an air and it's still looks factory good.

Having an iPhone and iPad haromiznes with the ecosystem well also. She also likes the lack of reboots due to updates,

As I've asked before, what makes Macs so much more user friendly versus modern Windows?

The interface is intuitively designed. Sounds like bullshit, but it's true.

Windows 8 is such a giant, giant step back in that regard when it comes to mouse/keyboard use,

Yes, that was an extremely shitty move by Apple. I hope it gets changed by the time I need a new computer, because I'm not really looking forward to spend a rediculous amount of money on a Mac Pro.
