TV shows change too much, perfect example is Dexter and how it descended into a pit of shit. How many people came back to adjust the score, probably not enough.

This list is legit. Obviously i'd make some changes, but overall a good list. #1 absolutely deserved. Great mini.

Freaks and Geeks got robbed though.

I admit I quit on Season 3 of Dexter. Season 2 seemed to blow its wad with James Doakes too soon and was great. Always wanted to pick it back up but I hear it's the same every season. And Deb continues to be annoying.

Many problems, but biggest for me are:
Mad Men
LOUIE
Orange is the New Black are all too low.
And where is VEEP!!

Edit:Veep got shafted. Its better than 8.0

Unfortunately Breaking Bad doesn't dip in that much quality like The Wire did.

You frame The Wire as a masterpiece. Unfortunately you're never going to give any other thought any attention because, honestly, you have made up your mind already.

You say these are all great but give specific examples of great characters, dialogue, etc. Examples from the show in detail.

The problem with "meta-commentary" shows is that is why they're defended as such. Not based on acting, pacing, story telling, dialogue, cinematography, etc. but how well it reflects out world. While it's a good angle it doesn't complete a show. By this metric Bill Nye the Science Guy is a masterpiece because of what it does to help foster science among children: you can't fault a show because it does so well to help illuminate or articulate real life, and that's a huge problem when trying to discuss a show like The Wire.

In terms of TV it is by pretty much a large margin the critical consensus barometer by which other dramas are measured and consistently at the top of aggregate TV drama lists. If you throw in miniseries then Band of Brothers becomes a serious challenger. You claim it isn't really worthy of the praise it gets, the onus is on you to make a competent argument to support that. Because the overwhelming consensus goes against your position.

You keep making these assertions: the journalism plot brings the show down, poor characters, weak dialogue, dips in quality, poor story-telling all without substantiating them. I get it, this is really about Breaking Bad vs. The Wire for you but even in that you are doing a poor job making that case. And I think if we are parsing out general categories and start going line by line comparing the two you are going to struggle making your case even more. Breaking Bad is a fun pulp romp with good writing and an incredible lead performance that elevates the series and The Wire is like an epic great American Novel in visual form. There is no shame in liking the former over the latter personally but you would have a hard time making the case that the former is objectively better then the latter.

I see you had to fit in every HBO show to disqualify Lost. You have good taste, otherwise. I don't hate HBO; I want to watch Sopranos and the Wire this year and the next. I've just never had a subscription. Not that I give a shit about a list with brand new shows in the top 20, I just blurted a gut reaction.

Well lets be honest, HBO could decide to produce nothing but shit for the rest of their existence and their catalogue of quality is in no way threatened from any competitors for the foreseeable future. Maybe the BBC has a case to make but there aren't any other networks we can point to with both the volume and quality that HBO has put out over the last 20 or so years.

Rome should be top 5.
Breaking bad should be dropped down about 10 due to the last couple of seasons

a good top 5 would be

Band of Brothers
Planet Earth
The Wire
Game of Thrones
Rome

The last couple of seasons, which contain some of the most memorable moments and best episodes in recent television history? LOL at putting GoT above Breaking Bad, talk about a shows quality decreasing...

you can't put a price on sparks
All I'm seeing is a bunch of shows from the last 25 years, and a couple of older classics.

they added the ability to rate tv shows much more recently than movies. most people watch new tv shows, so they're more likely to vote on newer tv shows as a result...

Nerd culture bullshit always stuffs the ballot box at IMDB. The fucking Dark Knight is the #4 greatest movie ever made according to IMDB.

You'd have to be pretty much insane to think Game of Thrones tops The Sopranos. I can see people (who are wrong, but not insane) saying The Wire and Breaking Bad top The Sopranos, but not fucking Game of Thrones, and certainly not both versions of Cosmos jesus.

And fuck Band of Brothers. So tired of maudlin army propaganda; it only has a B rating on Metacritic, which is pretty telling, and was basically just porn for the nationalists who got all Murica'd out after 9/11.

If Metacritic would provide series ratings (for some reason only seasons of shows can be scored, not an entire series) we'd have a real list.

Agree with all of this (except I <3 Band of Brothers).

Lost at 188 is way too low.
The sad thing about lists like this is that safe choices tend to get near the top, and brilliant (but divisive) shows like LOST end up way too low.

It should be in the top ten. It completely changed the game, and revolutionized what people imagined network TV could be.

33. Death Note (2006)

64. Hunter x Hunter (2011)

Seinfeld is 35 spots too low. It's the GOAT.

True Detective same score as The Sopranos and only 0.2 lower than The Wire.

Fuck the internets.

I'm sure that was before season 2. If you started True Detective's ratings over today, it probably wouldn't make the list.

Really? Breaking Bad had me hooked in the first 1 minute. Dexter by the end of first episode, easily. I'm not trying to start flame wars or bash The Wire, it's an honest question about when it gets better.

I guess a better question is, what do people like about it?

Dexter and Breaking Bad do not have nearly the depth of character development as The Wire.

The Wire is good because it really portrays and helps tell the story of Baltimore. And it's done really well since Simon was a reporter there for many years. You get life on the streets, union corruption, government corruption, school corruption, drugs and their impact on families, home life issues, etc, etc, etc. It's an incredibly deep show with a lot of characters you root for. Both good and bad. One of my favorite scenes of all time takes place between two friends with deep history telling their story of coming up on the streets. It's just that well done.

Go into the show without the mindset of "best show ever" and really keep the expectations down. It's not going to be a BB or Dexter or GoT where it comes out with a heavy swing and really grabs you. It's more like Sopranos, Deadwood and Mad Men where a story is being told and that story needs time to fully develop.

I'm actually surprised they finally made this list... Shows have had ratings for years on imdb, and I figured it would be trivial for them to make this list, but it took them forever and a day. It's obviously skewed towards newer shows since they tend to have more votes which vaults them upwards. Tons of great shows on there though. Stop going apeshit and watch something new!

They should also separate TV Mini-Series and TV Shows, so we don't get duplicates like Battlestar Galactica.

Code Geass R1 deserves to be there. Probably a top 15 anime.

The Shield should be way higher, like in the top 10.

Also, Six Feet Under at #67, wtf? Another top 10 show.

I still can't get over the fact 24 live another day is ranked considerably higher than the main series, especially the first 7 seasons. I mean wtf.
