Fuck offfffff
Hey got this as well ha

IGG backer from Japan received his and he was backer #27.
There was also another backer from China who received his as well.
I feel like we aren't gonna get tracking numbers or any info telling us they shipped and they're just gonna show up all of a sudden.

I'm #2000-and-something. Hope it shows sometime next month - I'm dying to play Owlboy and Xanadu Next.

Hey Phawx. Why do you expect Vulcan to be better than Dx12 for emulators?

I only have one data point, but if you check the dolphin blog from a month or two ago, Vulkan performed better or par with DX12.

Also for PPSSPP there is only future support for Vulkan right now. Looking forward to the future with updates.

Im legit surprised it struggles with PPSSPP or am i reading these previous posts wrong

I'm actually happy with perf of PPSSPP. Metal gear and God of War stutter but every other game I played is super smooth.

Also, thats perf today. It's only going to get better. Nice thing about Windows over Android is how easy it is to update the driver.

Good to know

I was curious. I know PPSSPP is a solid emulator at this point and runs smooth on just about eveything

Phawx, how's battery life now? Since you've had some time to mess with it.

Yea, I saw your request. I was trying to swing it with my current MAME romset and it's just a mess trying to remember how to convert my set into a current working set. Ideally I'd like to just download the latest MAME romset but it's huge and would take days to download. It's one request that I'm going to have to skip for now. Sorry about that.

I know there is another person on Dingoonity that has a MAME set and will be posting reviews.

Aside from that, I do have a PCem set and I'll try to see how it can emulate a Voodoo card and jazz.

Here is a PSP compilation video I wanted to get done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgrsZ08BSr0

OGL Backend, frameskip 1, all safe hacks and most games run like butter. There is a little bonus game at the end. Ilomilo+

So glad I bought it when it was 10 cents .. 2 years ago I think? Anyway, it plays perfect on the GPDwin and looks amazing. Hopefully it goes on sale again, for those of you getting the GPDwin make sure you buy it on sale. It's an interesting twist on the sokoban genre.

I'm glad I came off cool as a cucumber. I was still plenty worried. I know enough with having stressed my machine that it has legs. I've yet to see any artifacting but I do worry with the efficiency of the heatsink not properly sapping the heat. Also for comparison, the Fallout 4 video I was playing Fallout 4 for 10 minutes prior to me recording. That WoW video I started pretty much then and there.

Still I wasn't happy with the temps. Until I can do the heatsink mod, I'll probably ease my throttle down a bit.
For the PSP games that ran better, have you tried increasing the resolution?

Phawx, how's battery life now? Since you've had some time to mess with it.

Well, stock config was def in the 2-3 hour mark on heavy gaming Fan@max. After my BIOS changes to increase performance it's < 2 hours. We'll see how I go forward after I do my heatsink mod. I might revert all my changes and never use the fan to try to get to 4 hours.

I didn't. The Burnout game I could probably easily increase resolution but honestly, PSP games look amazing on the GPDwin.

Got three more videos up:

Rocket League: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCqanQsdr4I

Skyrim (with Low Spec Gamer settings): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQaL8teDDoE

Ori and The Blind Forest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wi3MrrXZWK4

That's really impressive stuff Phawx. Have you thought about Dark Souls with a super low internal resolution using Dsfix?

Maybe we could get an indie showcase? Isaac, Spelunky, Gungeon, etc?

I subbed btw.

Wow, that battery life is awful. Really awful. It wouldn't even last one plane trip.

I'm surprised by your PPSSPP performances. I remember getting better performances on Baytrail. That was with the DirectX backend.

For the most part, many games do run very well. It's just GoW or Metal Gear that showed poor perf.

I'll load up Dark Souls now and try to work with DSfix to see what I can manage. I think for tonight the only other video I was planning was showing Mario Kart Double Dash PAL and how well it works.

Doing an Indie Showcase is a good idea, I gotta load up Kingdom: New Lands which will be great on a handheld.

Thanks for subbing, it's totally not necessary. I just do the YT stuff as a hobby.

These are worst case scenarios. Also like Dr. Benton Quest mentions, I have my GPD Win unlocked which puts out more heat which is far more wasteful, energy wise. So the <2 hour case is if you are running like me. Otherwise, playing a 3D game from 2007 would be in the 3 hour range, realistically.

Excellent. Low spec gamer has a great Dark Souls guide.

What do you expect when he's literally playing the most intense games he can run on the device and pushing it as far as he can, watch the Nintendo Switch have similar issues or just slightly better.
Less intense gaming or emulation won't drain it as fast.

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but how well does this thing handle Metroid Prime or GCN in general? If performance is good for Prime then that's all I need to sell me on it.

It's not that good. :( even the PAL version isn't that great. Hopefully future versions of Dolphin can make it run faster but right now it's not good at all.

Having said all that, Intel released a new beta driver two days ago. Installing now and hoping Vulkan doesn't instacrash

Nope :/

That's a shame. The one thing I've dreamed of for years is Prime on the go. Hopefully we're close to that reality.

Do you think battery life would double? It'll still be like 3 max I'm guessing. Wish it had 10k battery. Oh well. Trade offs for weight and usability. Still a good start to this market space.

I mean, it really does depend on the kind of game and how intensive it is. Not necessarily double but I don't see why it wouldn't last 4/5 hours on older games/low req indie games.

It's kinda hard to judge battery life on something like this with the vast array of games you can technically play on this alongside the OS and the fan and whatever its running. I guess buying an external power pack might be necessary for plane trips and whatnot since I think three hours is fine for general use

Technically you can make it run for a real long time but from a stock perspective, like a person who isn't going to touch the bios or even disable battery saver in Windows, I think a healthy outlook is 4 hours of gaming max. This thing will stay idle on for 10 hours if you wanted, like if someone wanted to use it as a umpc, 6 hours is easy.

But if the only thing you really expect out of this is to game, don't expect more than 4 hours.

I have two more videos coming up soon. Dark souls with dsfiX and the PAL version of Mario kart.

Do you have Dark Souls 2? I'd love to see it tested as well, I think it might run better than 1.

Super Mario Sunshine running fullspeed, apparently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcEUDb3JxKw

Not sure if 8700 or 8750 though.

"IMPORTANT!: You need to open the Graphics configuration menu after the game starts every time you run a game. You only have to do this once and then it continues to run at the faster speed until you end the emulation/current game. You can see me do this at the start of the video."

What is this? I gotta try this mumbo jumbo. I'll report back and let you guys know my findings.

I do. I can give it a go.

HOLY SHIT! It actually worked. Why does this work?! It doesn't make any sense? Mario Sunshine is playing full speed for me.

It's not really magic, it's just that opening the settings overrides anything that was pre-set for the game via the INI file for the game. So it seems there's something included in there that makes it run worse on this hardware.

Is getting knocked through the door by the undead asylum demon scripted, or were you just really lucky there? I don't remember that. It's always a joy to watch people play it for the first time, though, you should really play it from start to end!

I heard others were getting it to run, but it looks like even at incredibly low resolutions* Dark Souls is still choppy. I'm hoping DS2 will run better. Thanks again for the videos!

I wonder if portable Steam machines are a future market. Windows 10 is free for these devices, right? Hmm.

I wonder if portable Steam machines are a future market. Windows 10 is free for these devices, right? Hmm.

They could be but without making direct sales from software its not a very profitable market, hopefully more company's dive into it, and hey with Nintendo sticking around even if Nintendo don't do Windows handhelds there with always be Chinese company's to *copy* it.

What exactly is the deal with the lack of portable x86 machines, compared to stuff coming out like the Switch, or the original NVidia Shield? Are x86 chips just harder to make smaller/cooler compared to things like ARM?

The x86 instruction set (operations implemented in the CPU) is insanely complex. Newer x86 designs simply added more and more operations while keeping all the old ones (for backwards compatibility)

This has one main advantage: x86 CPUs are remarkably compatible to REALLY old code (I think it's even possible to run some DOS applications natively on modern x86 CPUs).

But there is also a large drawback: There are a lot of duplicate and/or redundant instructions/operations that cannot be removed without breaking backwards compatibility for old programs. All these operations are implemented on the CPU with large transistor networks that constantly require some power, even when not in use.

ARM designs on the other hand are specifically designed for low power applications and use a very small and efficient instruction set (RISC). One the one hand that means that some operations that could be done on x86 in one single operation take multiple steps/operations to complete on ARM, but on the other hand the CPUs are much simpler, contain much less transistors and require much less power to run.

Add to that that at higher clockspeeds the differences between architectures begin to blur (at least for general computing, where you don't need complex operations all the time) and x86 has not that much of a speed advantage but quite a heavy power cost.

I thought getting knocked through the door was scripted? I've yet to play any dark souls yet.
