IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

Which graphic drivers to use ?

I've installed intel update utility and I see two drivers

I have the first one (n série ) xxx4256 but there is another type xxx4501

Gamecube emulation is far better than I expected.

TimeSplitters 2, Super Mario Strikers, and Super Monkey Ball are full speed (few audio glitches). PN03 is 25-27 in outside areas, but indoor levels are solid. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 jumps from 55-60. Spider-Man 2 runs at ~25 but has tons of graphics glitches to the point of being unplayable.

I still can't use any steam game. As soon as I start a new save from any game , picture freeze yet sound and control work

Damn, Dark Souls 2 runs AMAZINGLY well on this thing. Really makes me with 1 wasn't such a shitty port because it doesn't run very well at all. I'm running DS2 at default settings and 1280x720 and it's freaking smooth.

In case anyone was curious, I can confirm that Xanadu Next is playable on the GPD Win. Make sure you enable borderless windowed mode otherwise it'll go into "portrait view" when you run the game.

It's not a solid 60 FPS sadly. There are definitely some frame drops in certain areas although I haven't experimented much with the settings although I can conclude that reflections should be disabled to maintain 30+ FPS.

I noticed yesterday that the "A" key on my keyboard only works if I push it pretty hard. Also, on my second unit, the R2 button's microswitch seems to be slightly misaligned.

Phawx or anyone else who has opened this thing up, should it be pretty easy to open it and re-seat the keyboard/check out the shoulder button and fix it? I've opened other handhelds before with no issues but just wanna make sure I don't screw something up.

For the shoulder button. That will be very easy.

For the keyboard, I don't think it's going to be something you can fix. It's glued to the heatsink and they have these *metal* buttons that need to spring back when pressed. It sounds like yours is bent a little and I have no clue how you'd fix it.

Maybe with a tiny suction cup?

Where can I find a guide to improve the performance of the GPD?

Also something for the dolphin?

Mostly you're going to get benefits from disabling defender and windows search.

ShutUp 10 is an application that will disable most of these things for you with one button press. (just renable windows update if you want to use the Windows Store)

but def disabled Windows Search.

Also there is a modded 4501 driver, but I haven't seen any benchmarks that show any difference just yet.

Ok. Whatever I start a steam game , dolphin or 3D mark , screen goes black after few seconds yet sounds continues.

I've done phawx bios setup and did a reset as well

Is my unit defective ? It's not even getting very hot (70). Going insane.

After playing around with my GPD Win for a few hours I've come to the conclusion that either my device is hotter than normal or I just have a very low tolerance to heat in my handhelds. For example I just tried out Shadowrun Hong Kong and the temps go up to ~75 °C and I'm not using any performance tweaks. The 65-70 range is when it starts to get too warm for my personal comfort. Granted, it's nowhere near hot enough to inflict injury but I find it really uncomfortable to hold the device for extended periods.

You can downclock the device by forcing lower multipliers or maxing the GPU have strict battery saving.

Performance will go down naturally

Getting a bit worried now. My WIN sent from the Spanish GB warehouse said delivered on the 7th November and I just hoped it meant delivered to a UK courier or something as there's very little information, but I've still not had anything yet and GB haven't responded to me about it.

yeah, same boat. I'll hold off on emailing and worrying until next week.

Edit-
On second thought, given that our order numbers are similar, I feel like something MAY have happened. Im going to email them.
They emailed me back with some generic bullshit, but FedEx just updated my tracking.

Finally stateside. Expected delivery is next Wednesday.

any advice please? :D :(

Anyone got God eater they can run a test on? Would be much appreciated

From what I saw the psp emulated version was fine

but haven't seen the steam versions yet

Tried a few more games..

Fallout: New Vegas: Didn't seem to need any mods. Just installed via Steam and set everything to low. Strangely, the settings auto detected and put everything to max. Very playable as i I loaded my cloud save from a year ago. Surrounded by 4 powder gangers and was fine. Had a little stuttering when I first entered vats but was fine after that.

PES 2017: Best soccer game on handheld bar none.. wonder why Konami or EA Sports decided to skip releasing soccer games on handhelds. Around 30-45fps.

Arkham Knight: Played as catwoman and managed to fight 6 guys at once.. didn't try much but definitely playable.

KNIGHT!?!? Maybe Asylum...

I tried Fallout New Vegas but really wanted to use some mods. The game kept crashing on startup. I had this problems a few years ago on a different PC as well. I don't know what it is about New Vegas...I can get Fallout 3, 4, and Skyrim modded no problem, but New Vegas never seems to work for me.

City.

Ok Dolphin is working. Just Mario kart is freezing.

Still can't play any steam game I tried (lol I have just hl2 portal and dota ...). Freeze after few seconds. Anyone can try them ? Dota 2 freeze after character selection always

So I've played a few Steam games on my Win.

Run flawlesly or close enough:
Ys Origin
Hyper Light Drifter
Escape Goat 2
Bit.Trip Runner 2
Owlboy
Gurumin
Battleblock Theater
Rex Rocket
Spelunky
Super Hexagon
Crypt of the Necrodancer
Mutant Blobs Attack
Velocity Ultra
They Bleed Pixels

Run very well but with some compromises:
Dark Souls 2
Xanadu Next
Enter the Gungeon
Slain: Back from hell
Super House of Dead Ninjas
Shatter
Full Bore
Dishonored

Playable:
Skydrift (Very infrequent visual glitches)

No luck whatsoever:
Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed (crashes at launch:()
Downwell (black screen:'()

Overall: very happy with it!

Does somebody know how to prevent the device from randomly waking from sleep while closed when carrying it around?

Someone else mentioned Sonic All Stars Racing transformed crashed on them and yet I don't remember fixing anything to get it working.

Have you made you you have all runtimes and dependencies installed? VC++ runtime V47 installer will do all of them. Maybe try to install some older DX runtime installers.

More explanation ? :)

How's the build quality on this, guys? For those of you that actually have it in your hands and have used it for a while? Does it feel premium? Quality? Anything feel loose or sound creaky?

Build quality generally very nice and comparable to the new 3DS. Only a few weird points of note:

- The triggers have a different kind of feel, they click exactly like mouse buttons. However this is a rather appropriate design decision imo.

- The D-pad and face buttons are very mushy and have no click to them at all. My main disappointment with the device. The keyboard, however, is satisfyingly clicky, oddly.

Yeah, I believe Steam did install VC++ runtime and some other stuff. Maybe I'll reinstall it and check what exactly does it install and whether someting may be missing

Shoulder buttons feel kinda loose, but that seems to be by design and they work very well. I've never been particularly happy about hand held controls but these are... pretty good I think so far. Screen is great. As for the premiumness of it all, that's a bit subjective, but I'd probably rate it somewhere between a Nintendo handheld and a Sony one (the good Sony handhelds, not PSP Street :P)

A few pages back, somebody posted that there's a fix for FO3 (and some other games, apparently) that tricks the game into thinking you have an nVidia GPU. From what I understand, it works with FO NV as well, but requires some additional INI changes or something.

Edit: This post is what I was referring to.

I did a clean install because my registry was foobared. Couldn't set default browser and email unless I did it a certain way. Running smoothly now
Only thing I noticed is when I did a fresh install I only got one sensor in devices to turn off I couldn't figure out how to install the other one but in device manager I had no bad drivers or items that needed drivers so no idea. Everything latest drivers and firmware. Ordered from geekbuying from their cn distributor.

I tested a bunch of games.

Castle crashers runs great
Torch light 2 runs great with settings turned down.
Diablo 3 runs decent with settings turned down. ( had to manually change res in the cfg because of black screen.
Doomsday engine runs great at 24 to 30 fps Maybe i can do better
Quake 1 runs great and other engines that enhance quake 1 like darkplaces and such.
Duck tales Remastered works great
Dungeons and dragons shadow over mysteria works great.
Double Dragon neon works great
Warframe with all settings turned down works ( Its playable if by yourself and can use keyboard/mouse Maybe I can do better)

Most games had the correct resolution automatically but some I ha to manually edit cfg or change in game

Now the big one for me
Current Mame with current romset works great. I tested Metal slug 1-5, Punisher, Magic sword, Simpsons Arcade, Tmnt 1 / back in time, AvP, Both dungeons and Dragons by capcom, Battle Circuit ( probably more but cant remember)
I would like to get hyperspin setup but not how to do it.
I well test Duke Nukem Anniversary Edition when I get the cash to buy it.
I did all th performance boosting phawx had in his video

I have had one driver crash since I have had the gpd win and thats why I first had it turned on for about 30m and maybe rotated it a couple times and didnt have the sensors off.

Hmm well I played more than an hour of Witcher 3 without a single crash.
And by play I mean like barely double digit framerates at 1280x720 with every graphic setting on the lowest possible setting and then when I changed the config file to 800x600 I was getting mid to low 20s and with it running in the 10's during combat.
Text is unreadable however.
I wish I had remembered to check temps but I didn't so all I can say is that is the hottest I've ever felt it get.
Like borderline uncomfortable to hold.
So Witcher 3 doesn't crash a bit yet I get crashes in other far less demanding games that other people with Win's can play successfully.
If this were a issue with the hardware I don't think I'd be able to play this seeing how far I was pushing it compared to other games that crash.

Also I really didn't trust the battery voltage the device reports and the battery level indicator on the task bar and I especially don't now.
After half an hour playing it plugged in I unplugged it and for another half hour played Witcher and then watched videos for another half hour with screen brightness on 25% and after all that and my device being quite hot its telling me my battery is at 95%.
There's no way that hour of use only drained 5% of the battery.

May I ask how you got the joystick and buttons to work with mame? The joystick option is grayed out for me. For some reason the dpad works and I'm using it along with the keyboard but it's less than ideal.

I switch my switch to the most right setting and have it switched to before mame loads

Maybe our versions of mame are different. I'm using mameui32. If I do what you suggest I have to switch back to mouse mode after mame loads in order to check the joystick box in the options controller settings. And it's grayed out. I notice that setting up emulators is hard or impossible switching between mouse and joystick modes.

Tested a few more games ..

Prison Architect - Works great as expected. As the game itself is not very fast paced, the mouse controls work decently well. The controls are much better than expected although the UI can be a little small for some. I managed to drag and drop, creating rooms and placing objects without much problems.

Fallout 2 - Same as above. Since it is turn-based combat, the mouse controls are really quite okay.

ROTK 13 - The only graphics option available to me is the resolution (set it to 1280 x 720). There is no way to set or customise other graphics/texture/performance stuff unless I missed it out. Performance is okay - around 25 FPS for me. Zooming in and out can cause some stuttering. IMO, it is playable especially since combat/battles can be paused.

Will be testing Valkryia Chronicles and AC: Black Flag next..

Thanks for the feedback guys. At this rate I feel like I'm leaning towards a Surface Pro 3/4, especially with the heat comments about this portable.
