...You know, I don't really wanna if they're gonna scream "HELP" ALL OF THE TIME NON STOP UNTIL I HEAR IT EVEN WHEN I TURN OFF THE GAME.

I swear my sole motivation for doing the achievement related to that is
so I didn't have to hear 5 different terrible animu voice actors screaming "HAAALP" over and over and over.

They don't even do it if they get HIT. They do it if there's a monster ANYWHERE NEAR THEM. I swear. It got to the point where I was close to screaming at the TV "what do you want from me!? My party is a whiny douchebag flute player, a bitch with a bow, and two fucking ten year olds! Two of them are casters! One of them's useless!"

Well, I'd still be playing this if my 360 weren't dead ;_;

I had just gotten the twins and finished the first dungeon with them (well, it froze during the cutscene at the end, so I didn't manage to save). Well, now the box is dead so it'll be a while anyway.

It's too bad, I was really enjoying the game, despite it being the 'horrid intro' people claim it is.

Oh well, at least I can Disgaea 3 in the meantime.

I find the beginning hours to sort of flip between good and bad.

Good: Opening escape from prison!
Bad: Run from the dragon!
Good: Find the twin's father!
Bad: Destroy the castle gates!
Good: Destroy the chain in the desert!
Bad: Escort mission!

I don't know, I tried to like this game, but I'm almost at the end and I'm pretty disappointed. The last (I think) dungeon is just pissing me off even more.

It's almost like playing FF12, except you can't set anybody's gambits, and everybody's gambit settings BLOW. Seriously, their priorities are really fucked up. Just an example: Eugene had enough MP for Salvus AND I had a stock of 30-something Miracle Medicines, and the dickhead still wouldn't revive anybody and it was "Game Over" at the THIRD boss without a save point.

There are just too many small issues that accumulate to make the game feel sucky: the crappy animu voice actors, Godzilla-quality lip syncing, cliche rip-off characters, clunky menu system, shitty unprogrammable AI, lack of save points, "secondary characters" (seriously, whose bright idea was that?), I could go on... but I just had to rant and get this all out. The game has me pretty frustrated right now.

I AM ABSOLUTELY OUT OF ITEMS

At the second save point. Just going to give up if I can't get some items. :(

Y2K, yes he is.

THANK HEAVENS!! I had no miraculous potions left and at one point I had only 2 characters living. I found him next to a save point and loaded up on potions and I was OK. I never let that happen again. :) Always have a deep supply of miraculous potions!

This game needs some goddamn checkpoints!! I mean if I go to town expecting there to be a savepoint and the town is under attack or something, at least give me a damned checkpoint! Screw dying and completely feeling like I've wasted the last hour of my life. Blue Dragon had checkpoints before major events. It's a braindead decision not to have.

Really, why the hell are many Japanese developers braindead when it comes to modern game design it seems?? REPLAYING TRACTS OF GAMEPLAY OVER AGAIN BECAUSE OF LACK OF CHECKPOINTS OR SAVES IS NOT FUN. Focus test that. I'm right! Trust me on that one!

It's really not that bad.
Think of the poor(?) people who had to play through entire dungeons in games like Phantasy Star 2 or Final Fantasy 1 without saving.

"Modern" game design. Pfft...yeah right. More like allowing gamers everywhere to trade their jeans in for pampers.

What the hell am i suppose to do or go in the Bithan Mines, just reached a few dead ends, and running in circle in there...I defeat everyone pretty easily but all of a sudden some groups kill me really fast,i have no clue why.Two of my guys survived but Capell was dead and i got that stupid slow fading screen...I had about 10 Miraculous Medecine, why didn't they revive me?? and this is the first spot where there is a long stretch with no saves from Fayel...why didn't they put one just inside the mine?

It's the leaders, they hit hard. There's one door I can't get into, but it's just a shortcut path and a place to get some crap early, nothing critical.

Why go back that far? Blue Dragon has dungeons that are two and a half hours long without save points or checkpoints between. Really makes you sweat those surprise attacks.

I'm really enjoying UI so far, but I've got a feeling it'll end up ending about 10 hours before I want it to. They should have really bulked up these locations with more optional stuff to do, since there's almost no point to the towns at the spot I'm now.

I never even noticed to be honest. I guess that's because I missed the official thread where people may or may not have been complaining about the lack of saves/checkpoints.

Graaaah, I hate escort missions. Why do developers insist on putting them in games still? I don't think I've ever met a person that likes escorting people.

Finished it up at about 25 hours and had a great time. My housemates actually watched me play through the entire game because they said they liked watching the fights and the story was good, so I had an audience the whole time :lol There were definitely some tri-Ace-esque twists I was not expecting, and the story definitely pleased me in the end. There were some real funny bits, a few sad ones, and some interesting ones. I don't think the story was necessarily bad, just that the way it was told was kind of bad.

I went through the Seraphic Gate and died on Gabrielle Celeste :( Apparently so so fucking close to a save point after well over an hour :( Will try again later! And will be doing this again on hard (though without an audience, so I don't have to rush things like I did this time).

I suppose what with being aware of the faults if I were a reviewer I'd give it a 8.0 or 8.5, but some reviewers were so clearly full of shit (IGN), and for myself, this is the most fun I've had with a game this generation.

I guess I haven't gotten to the part where the game gets awesome, because my impressions (so far) are pretty much the opposite. I'm at the part where you have to fight the bear and save the boy in the desert, but I'm contemplating pounding a nail into my dick instead. It's that unfun.

I want to like this game, and maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I am seriously strongly disliking this goddamn game.

Help me GAF. I want to love this.

Well, right after that, you have to fight a bear, with only Aya (by far the worst party member in the game so far), AND you have to make sure the boy being attacked doesn't die! :D .... :(

Played for about 15 mins. Seems pretty great. It even has speaker positioningsound testing for 5.1 calibration. Will play more later after dinner. I think the only people that will be disappointed are the ones expecting my disappointment! :lol

Yea I don't understand how people were complaining about the sound design. I think it is one of he best RPGs I have played in a while in that department. So far I am liking the combat a hell of a lot but the characters and story pacing are horrible. Gonna keep going till the end though.

I think you honestly may suck at it, which could definitely hamper the fun of the game. I don't know, I haven't been following other people's impressions too clearly until I beat it, but I didn't think that was a difficult part in the slightest. Be warned though, you have to do some quick shooting with Aya after that, which I wasn't expecting, and did get a quick gameover as the aiming mechanics can sometimes be fiddly (ie shit).

I felt it was more of a problem with the sound effects, the missing bits of sound in random patches (including any sound effects at all) and thing like that. Maybe it's technically awesome, but I don't have surround sound, so I don't know, but the direction it's been taken seems sucky.

Hahaha, that's possible. I'm just not liking the game at all, so there's that too.

I did get the "On the Run" achievement last night, but didn't realize i did until this morning because I was raging drunk at the time. I don't even remember a dragon....

Saving the boy is easy... now try and get the achievement for not letting him get hurt: there blows my fuse! >__<

This game is all kind of "eeeh not so bad!" while fighting, only mixed with so many frustrating things in between the combats that I have a hard time playing it more than one hour at the time... but eh, it wouldn't even let me do that because of those awesomely sparse and so so well located save points!
Urrrg!

Maybe I'm underprepared. Aya dies in about 5 seconds.

Strange, I thought that was extremely easy. I got the achievement on my first try :)
Maybe I got lucky then?

I'm in Dais now, and I find the game very entertaining. I kinda like the story, don't know what's wrong with it. I does has some direction issues, but I think I have a goal again.

Oh I see what you mean. There are certain cutscenes (especially the ones without voice) that are VERY poorly done. It seems like no effort were put into those at all so if you're judging the entire thing based on a simple sound set up I can understand how you would feel. But for people with a good surround sound set up, the sound really shines while it's running and in actual cutscenes. The effects, voice clarity, directional positioning, etc is great. Too bad about the lazy fill-in cutscenes though. :/

I thought that one was easy too.
If you just get Aya to spam Sparrowrain, then the snakes will never get close enough to the boy and he will run off to a safe point so you can kill the snakes and the bear.

Now, rescuing the prisoners... THAT'S a hard one. Still not managed it yet :\

keep the volume low and turn on the subtitles, worked for me so far. the graphics bother me more than the VA, they go from looking pretty good to pretty shitty

Yeah I have had a couple of times where the sound cut out when it was loading, etc. But really the mix and 5.1 implementation is worthy of praise. I really can't think of an RPG that had did it this well. Pretty much ever NPC in the game registers in the 5.1. And that is just one of the things I have noticed.

I wouldn't by any stretch call the VA bad. It's not AMAZING or anything, bit it's pretty far from bad.

I agree, except for Balbagon and that maid girl. They have some of the worst voice acting I've heard in a while.

The dialogue and lipsyncing on the other hand, is pathetic. The dialogue is only slightly better than Eternal Sonata.

Glad you said that, because thats exactly what got me to come to this thread and post that. I didn't know I could turn the VA down, guess I'll do just that!

I still have to make it to another save point with just two characters. I've found a way past the shadow monsters area-- I just hide and let the other team take them out. But I have to fight at some point. :\

This is really the only RPG in recent memory where I said to myself, "I could conceivably be stuck here for good." Not like, "Well, I just have to change my tactics," or, "I have to leave the dungeon and start over," which happened to me a lot in FF3 or DQ8. I'm just completely stuck.

I'm currently at the
underwater dungeon
. I'm pretty close to the end, right?

Will I still be able to finish up unfinished business when I'm done with this dungeon?

I haven't missed the Seraphic Gate, have I?

The Seraphic gate opens on your post-credits save, where you're placed back at an earlier town. As for where you are now..

IIRC, that's literally the last thing you do in the game, and there's no going back until your post-end save. After the credits you can get to the Seraphic Gate by using the previously inactive teleporter at Kolton castle.
