Okay here' s a pointer. I was at lvl 31 when I reached Port Zala and I feel I'm wayyy to damn powerful. Doing 900 - 1000 points a slash. The lvl cap is 200 btw.

I think it's more like Lv 255. Capell was Lv 202 when I beat the boss of Seraphic Gate.

*sigh* I'm almost done with this game achievement-wise, but I have some of the worst achievements to get. I already botched the "get all the items" achievement because you have to get a rare drop from the ogre-type things in Sapran. In Infinity Mode, I've hit a wall because I can't take down a certain vermified douchebag within the time limit. Ugh, I hope the C Voucher is released soon and has something really useful.

Okay, so I am running into some mild annoyances now. The whole connect business doesn't work at all, especially in battle. In towns it's annoying because to get everything, you'd have to connect to every chracter (who tend to move around after events) and talk to every npc one or twice. With this many characters that's not something I plan on doing. Granted, that's what faqs are for and I admit I am using one for these purposes, but it still reeks of bad game design (FFXII did this too, without a strategy guide it's impossible to get everything).

Also I get the feeling that some of gameplay elements aren't really thought through and feel unnecessary. Who here actually uses the parry skill?

Also, as there are quite a few fetch-quests, a quest log or at least an indication on quest progression would be nice. If I have to kill 30 Flesh Biters, fine, but at least give me a counter or something.

I'm super tired so I will post final impressions later, but I HAVE to get this out of my system (ending spoilers):

CAPELL SLAPS AYA HAHAHAHAHAHA
:lol :lol :lol :lol

And this is why I love Capell. Repeatedly he did shit I jokingly said to my housemate. Faina says she'll do anything, me and my housemate go "Anything?" And immediately Capell says the same. Aya's wasting time in the ending, so we say
just hit her dammit! And he does!

Capell's one of my favorite protagonists ever, honestly.

Diablos said:
Also, (yes another ending spoiler ahead omgz) it is safe to assume that
the final scene with Aya is a dream since they were all talking about going to sleep anyway? I mean, wtf? Why would Capell just avoid her for two years :lol

Well, they did the same basic thing in
Final Fantasy IX. Protagonist magically escapes impossible scenario, mysteriously appears in dramatic fashion. I didn't think it was a dream, I just assumed it was a sign of the anime like story (and also it was more of a matter that Capell had only just got back to the planet and was on his way to finding Aya). The going to sleep thing only applied to Aristos, which Aya was not.

Just finished this. To a certain extent I can understand why people would dislike it (the game has a lot of small problems), but in the end I found that the game definitely overcame its problems and I had an absolute blast playing it.
I liked the story better than most jrpg's, even with the huge plot holes. Same goes for the characters. Some may be hideous to look at and some are just super-annoying, mostly due to horrible voice-overs...fucking Vic. But the lead characters worked for me.

It seems that almost every plus in the game has a minus:

-I love the huge environments, but there are too few of them.

-I love item-creation, but I hate that you can only do it outside and not in town.

-I love walking great distances. I hate that there is no fast travel option.

-I like characters with different abilities. I hate that you can't switch characters on the overworld or at savepoints, meaning you have to travel all the way back to town to switch to a character with the right ability.

-I love Aya. I hate Vic...fucking Vic.

-I like the story. I hate that it's so inconsistent.

-I love having tons of different items. I hate that you can't use them in battle due to the horrible inventory system.

All in all though, I really liked the game. The mayor points that I love are the huge environments, coupled with a great free-roaming camera (every jrpg should have this) and the nice story and characters. The downsides aren't enough to make me dislike the game.
I'd say if you're into Jrpg's and have liked FFXII in the past (there are definitely some big similarities) go for it.

You can create items in town by walking up to a party member and connecting with them. You can only do this with one person at a time though.

i just started this and the first 2 hours are so are utter garbage. i almost gave up on the game faster than i gave up on Eternal Sonata, but it's starting to get a lot better now.

Couldn't make it. I just sold it back.
Got A Link to the Past and Mega Man 6 instead. I think it was a good move.

I think the comparisons with XII are pretty accurate, I didn't really like it either.

I am Lv170-ish in Infinity Mode, so I'm getting close to being able to take on the boss of the bonus dungeon and getting that damned 1G achievement. I cannot wait to put an end to Infinity Mode. Most frustrating thing I've ever played.

I get so tired of dying just because you meet a group of Dancing Crossbows and they just run away and hit you with a little attack and stun you over and over and over and over and... you get the idea. That kind of thing happens way too much in this game.

After that crap is done I just have Compulsive and Filthy Rich to get; although Compulsive is probably going to be the hardest achievement in the whole game.

I actually didn't know that (though it's pretty obvious when you think about it...). But still, only one character and in a big city it's no less annoying.

Ok one question. Is that video at the start of the game an intro to the story or does it have some spoilers?

It's actually a part of the story that takes place before the first scene. Watch it before starting. :)

Finally finished this up just in time for Fable 2.

I enjoyed it overall. Not a great game but certainly good.
Clocked in around 28 hours.

Princess Skittles

Prince's's 'Skittle's
I picked this up earlier this week from the Toys R Us sale but I'll probably hold off on it for a week or two to cool down from my Vesperia marathon. I'm kind of hoping they release a DLC to unlock Hard More from the beginning, it would motivate me a little more to go for 1000/1000 here instead of having to play the damn game three whole times (even if it is short). Who knows, maybe I'll like the game enough that it won't matter, playing it even three times would probably take less time than it did to get 1000/1000 on Vesperia.

This game is $40 new and $35 used at Gamestop already. Didn't it just come out a couple of months ago for the regular $60?

The release date was Sep 2. So it took less than 6 weeks for the first major price cut.

picked this up at launch, but only got around to it today. i'm only three hours into it, but this games is AWSOME. i'm not sure where all the hate is coming from. if the game only gets better as you get further into (which is what all impressions state), then this may end up ranking extremely high on my favorite rpg list. i'd recommend that anyone who's interested pick this up--especially at $40. i'll post further thoughts/impressions as i progress through the game.

Princess Skittles

Prince's's 'Skittle's
I started playing this over the weekend, I wasn't really ready to jump into another RPG but given that it's supposed to be 30 hours or less, I figured I could handle it. I'm REALLY liking it so far, more than Vesperia, I think. BUT, before I get reamed I think that has a lot to do with having played almost every past Tales game before and the series is starting to get really stale for me.

I do have to say that I am SO sick of bland Sakuraba soundtracks. Barf, puke and vomit.

i started playing this last week and i've just done the
desert escort missions
and i can suddenly understand some of the hate.

the targeting and lock-on stuff is pretty bad. it's not a deal breaker, but when trying to do things like that, it gets annoying really quickly. the AI is also pretty terrible. somehow i can attack like 4x faster than other people in my party.

i think this is one game, although it's action, that would benefit greatly from Mass Effects battle system. the ability to pause and plot out what you're team is gonna do.

plus i ran into this odd bug with the old ring so i'm out the one achievement.

overall, i went from having a lot of fun with it after the world started to open up to getting pretty frustrated with some of the mechanics.

With the 360 finally fixed, got back into this. About 10 hrs in, first town of disc 2.

Really digging the game. All the events leading to and including
Vesplume Tower
were awesome.
The trek up the mountain, splitting into 3 teams, the awesome music, and the hectic boss fights
. Great stuff.

The story's entertaining. Sometimes the story/dialogue is a bit awkward, and the voice-acting for some characters is overdone, but it has some funny moments. I actually like Capell and Aya, and some of the side characters. The twins are also kind of charming in their own creepy stab-you-in-your-sleep kind of way.

Yeah, really liking the game.

I'm at the end-game (just beat
Leonid
).

Really enjoying the game. The combat isn't the deepest ever, but it's very fun.

The actual storyline isn't particularly good (the serious parts, at least), but it has funny bits, and I actually like some of the party members. Some of the voice-acting (side characters or NPCs, really) is just really, really bad. Music's great. I especially like the boss music against knights of the order.

I can see why the lack of save points could be a problem, but I was fine with it. Though annoying when you can lose up to 30 min of gametime, it kept a sense of danger, and I was really fighting for my life, knowing that losing at a boss could mean loss of a good amount of progress. I thought it actually added to the game, in a way. Not that I'm apologizing for it, but it worked for me.

I'm almost at 20 hrs, and it feels just right. I don't like when games are artificially lengthened to meet a certain length criteria, but it was good here. Doesn't overstay its welcome, but also doesn't feel too short. I mean, the story itself comes to its conclusion (as good or bad as it may be, it includes) without feeling like nothing really happened.

I'm liking this more than LO/BD/ES. Vesperia is still better, but that game has co-op. This with online co-op would have been awesome.

40 bucks is a good deal for those on the fence.

So I just rented this game. I really wanted to buy this game but I got so caught up with school that I put it off. I didn't think that I would be enjoying this game as much as I am, but damn. It isn't super awesome but its a lot better than I expected. I didn't think I would be able to beat this is five days but I have until wednesday and after 8 hours of gameplay, I just started the second disc. Is this game really that short? As fun and awesome as it is, having 2 parties attack an enemy seems a little unfair and overpowering

alright, i'm about 11 hours into the game. i just got to vesplume tower and i cannot understand the mediocre reviews this game got. so far, it's on its way to replacing skies of arcadia as my favorite rpg of all time. the battle system is simple, effective, but FUN and SATISFYING. the pacing is great, the story is displaying enough promise to keep me interested and wondering what is going to happen next, and the music is fantastic. there's really some great pieces on the soundtrack. and, the game is DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS.

also, there's some really likable characters in this game. capell, aya, and sigmund are all very well done, the kids make me laugh, and edward is a grade a douchebag. poorly-acted cut-scenes are few and far between in this title and aya may be one of the best characters i've come across in an rpg.

i will never pay attention to reviews when it comes to jrpg's again. and, if this is any indication of what tri-ace is going to deliver with star ocean 4, then that game just shot up my most anticipated list to number one.

i won't say anything else until i finish the game, but i seriously urge anyone who is on the fence about this one to pick it up. especially at 39.99.

You've yet to hit the shittiest moments of the game though (seriously, there are a couple dreadful bits on the second disc :-\). Though I agree with your every sentiment - this is a fantastic RPG and it breaks my heart knowing there'll never be a sequel, as the system is awesome and there's so many great moments in it.

I need to stop reading this thread, it makes me mad.

Effin' S-E, should have just set the initial price at $30 or $40. It was at $60 for, like, barely over a month.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Finished the game, there were some awesome parts but overall I felt the game was fairly mediocre, probably my least favorite tri-Ace game. The Item Creation system was probably tri-Ace's best and most refined, yet, though. Achievements are a pain in the arse to get, I didn't even bother with most...

So now I finally finished the game. The ingame counter is at about 34 hours, but I've probably played a bit longer because of those times I died...

And it's awesome! One of my favourite games this gen for sure. This is actually my first tri-Ace game, but I'll definitely look into more of their games.

The only boring/bad parts about it the game was IMO the beginning and
the lunar rain effect on the players, that was annoying
.

picked this up form amazon for 19 on black friday. just popped it in for the first time and dear lord those children are annoying as hell. i hope i am never forced to use them.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
So I just recieved this game via the Amazon $20 sale of awesome. Given all the backlash I am kinda liking it. The first hour is really awkward with the jailbreak, dark forest, and Aya carrying. Now that the game has started proper though, it's kinda neat. The real-time experience gives it an edge, and it's generally pleasant to play, especially with the calming music. The connect stuff seems overly complex though.

Voices are atrocious however, well mostly the writing. Aya during that first hour comes off as a total bipolar bitch, and Edward isn't much better. Everyone seems to have a lot of trust in this flute player kid they don't know as well. It's just all really half-baked.

I do love all the Trait and Talent descriptions for each character at least!

Oh and fuck these achievements. So many missables...

Paznos

I also got the game from Amazon on black friday and I'm at the end of the game and it's gotten better but the constant yelling and whining which doesn't really end til a few hours into disc 2 has really made the game really irritating for the most part but it was only 18 bucks and as I said it's gets better towards the end which is kind of unfortunate.

Oh and Aya and Edward are like that most of the game :(

In terms of personalities, Edward never ceases to annoy, but he is a heavy-hitter in gameplay terms. The kids Rico and Rucha I actually liked. Initially they look just overly cherubic, but they grow on you and are both very useful in battle.

Been jumping in and out of the post-game
Seraphic Gate
. Liked it enough that I may set it aside for a hard difficulty run in the future, straight through with max efficiency until and if I hit a difficulty wall.

I just finished the first "boss"
the blue ogre, with the dragon behind him
but it still feels like a button masher to me. Is this going to change? Will you need to use some tactics later in the game? Will some better combos come available?

It does improve as I felt very disconnected from combat early on myself. Eventually enemies will have more health and offensive tricks that you will find yourself actively using different combo and skill dial-ups to take them down. It's very Dynasty Warriors-esque actually, (this string launches, this string stuns, this string knocks back, this string hits multiples, etc...)

Also as your party grows and you get more capable skills and magic, the combat intensifies(It's awesome watching my Sigmund, Balbagan, Michelle team just run amok and do crazy chains on field). But really the early game is just not put together very well.

Also wow at the dungeon moments where you have multiple party groups on screen fighting. This game shines when your entire dozen+ lineup is taking on mass numbers of mobs. Just needs more of that!

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Also, it's shameful that Sidequests are not logged someplace to keep track of. Hell, it's almost impossible to tell you were even given a sidetask in most cases without consulting a guide. So many of them appear transparent with the usual NPC forgetalogue.

That also bleeds into the Situation Bonus problem. Impossible to know they ever exist without prior knowledge. You might get lucky on a few, but most require serious pre-planning and faq reading to discover. Lame.
