If Ted Price thought that they could go forward being independent, they'd have stayed independent. The industry cannot tolerate independent studios the size and cost of Insomniac going forward.
And good news, they are producing a new IP once they've finished with X-Men. Why is it so hard to believe that a bunch of game devs actually want to break ground with genuine AAA Marvel games?
It's not that devs don't want to make great AAA Marvel games. It's that I personally don't care too much for it. Of all the big superhero games coming in the next 6-8 years, only X-Men genuinely interests me and that's due to that being my favorite Marvel property. Plus even if the MCU X-Men films end up being trash, they at least have the animated series where even the new one did well (and was a critical hit).
As an example a Blade game would be interesting to me as well but I don't have much confidence in it going by who the developers are (not that Arkane Lyon don't make good games; I just don't know if their style is a good fit for a game like Blade) and the Blade MCU film being stuck in development hell to where it'll probably end up cancelled. And I wouldn't expect a modern Blade game to have much connection with the Wesley Snipes films, which is where most of my nostalgia & appreciation for the character come from.
Miles Morales is not DLC (nor an expansion), it's a standalone smaller game.
I know. But where is this guarantee we're going to get a standalone smaller game with Venom? The leaked roadmap?
Venom spin off doesnt count as DLC, just like Miles Morales didnt for the original.
Spider-Man DLC was kinda ass, so nothing of value was lost
They are 100% making a 2.5 like Miles Morales, be it with Venom or not. Spider-Man sells like crazy and they will make something to sell while making 3.
How do we know this? Nothing's been officially confirmed yet.
I agree so. definitely a venom side game incoming
I think if that were a lock, this would have been a great time to at least tease such was in the works. Again, messaging with SIE this gen is just so ass; they really don't know how to communicate with their core customer base. They should know that many are expecting a new standalone entry, even if there is no DLC. It wouldn't hurt them to have these studios at least throw a bone to the community and show they know what people are looking forward to.
This whole strategy of pretending games don't exist until they're one year out from release is just dampening a good amount of enthusiasm in pockets of the community. People shouldn't have to feel they're acting entitled just to get word on new content & games they bought a $500 console to enjoy. That's why the PC port announcement in no way makes up for bad messaging: Sony knows their core audience didn't buy a PlayStation just to be told to buy the game on a PC instead. What's new coming to
PS5 owners who bought the game within the past year, Sony?
Well apparently, nothing. Or nothing substantial. They better get a handle on knowing how to dole out these types of announcements going forward; every miss is just chipping away at the community.
what large amount of DLC did the first game get besides The City That Never Sleeps DLC?
Miles Morales doesn’t count as DLC, and we know there’s likely a Venom game similarly coming
Again, until it gets officially confirmed, any standalone expansion like a Venom is 50/50 at best. We've seen other games from that roadmap that looked like a lock, only to end up cancelled.
I did not say it did not sell, but if it stole more thunder from Spider-man 2 (at a lower price) than the profits it gained overall.
Eh, IMO the only way that could maybe happen is if the game following up the expansion did not live up to expectations, or the expansion itself dampened excitement around the IP. To my knowledge, the MM expansion was generally well-received; many even say it's better than the original game.
I don't buy into the "(insert) fatigue" concept unless there is something, usually around the question of quality, that causes the fatigue. A good thing will, generally, keep people excited for the next version or increase hype for the next version. The inverse only happens if there's a drop in the perceived quality or the formula is getting too stale in a short period of time. And to the latter point, release frequency that's too frequent
can have a negative impact.
But even supposing that it's a frequency issue, then people are just gonna ask why the formula isn't freshened up to excite again?
