It's not that they're bad, but more that they don't translate well to touch (imo). This is a game that comes from the era where more was expected of the player. Items which can be interacted with are not explicitly highlighted, nor is your attention intentionally drawn to a specific "hot zone". On a touch device it comes across as a very matte, dull (yet quite expansive) environment that you are left to flounder in and discover some sort of interactivity/narrative.

My complaints are likely more targeted toward the game itself as a 2013 experience rather than the iOS port.

This is coming from someone that loved the old Gold Box games and things like Darklands...but I think I've moved on.

You only played it for an hour though, and you're wrong.

The game controls very well with touch. Want to attack an enemy? Use a spell? Walk somewhere? Touch. Could not be easier. Interactive items are highlighted with text in pause mode and are easy to open and use. The menus take maybe 5 minutes to get the hang of.

If you've played a Bioware game before a lot of this will be logical and easy to figure out. Other than that, a little investment of time for a game that was easily 50 hours long is not too high a price to pay.

The game is certainly a little clunky by modern standards but it's a deep and rich experience. Bemoaning the fact that barrels don't glow and that you have to explore a lot is rather missing the point. It's supposed to be difficult and hostile and scary, that's what makes it fun.

The iOS 7 power-down device popup/menu looks straight out of Mirror's Edge, I like (can't screenshot it for obvious reasons).

This is a fair point that cements the fact that people approach games for different reasons.

Yeah man, damn those challenging games! Where the easy mode at? :p

I'm not afraid to admit it!

I like dexterously challenging games, but not necessarily ones which obfuscate mechanics and details (either by design a la Dark Souls or via vintage a la Baldur's Gate). If I had more time on my hands I may very well have loved the game....but you are making think about re-installing it if that is any consolation.

....aaaand bought.
I've never played a Bioware game from that era before, despite at the time gaming on PC (and consoles). Dunno why, maybe I didn't speak english that well being a kid and all (I'm going for 36 now... Le sigh) and there wasn't a translation around back then. I know there is now for the EE version on PC/MAC but Beamdog put out the game english-only on iOS. It sucks because there's a flood of 1-stars reviews just for missing the Italian adaptation.

I'm happy to play it in o.v. but I wonder if one could take the pc port's Italian pack and put it in this version via iFun Box or something.

@ahayschi Thanks!

Ah, KR:F... got to the
Temple of Saqra; and cruised it... 15/15 waves down; 20 hears left; full mechs and two necros... then Saqra appears and wrecks my shit with his crew.

:D

I had a really great time with it from start to end. It's utterly brutal to begin with. You are SO weak, and being used to modern games it's shocking to get so utterly destroyed as you will do, especially if you wonder off the beaten path. I went the wrong direction for several areas at first and got my head kicked in repeatedly. The upshot of this was that I had a decent idea of how the game worked when I got into it 'proper' and I had a level up along the way.

At the core it's a dungeon crawler and the pace is wonderful, especially at the start when literally every baddie could kill not only you, but maybe the entire party too. After a while you get some cool loot and some levels and it becomes a little easier, but it's still hard as hell. Some of the boss fights are manic, where on the first turn you're unloading a million buffs and debuffs instantly and really breaking the fight down on a second to second basis. It's so fun, much deeper than Dragon Age and ME, where the pausing doesn't seem quite as important.

There is one bug that I don't think they've fixed yet, where a spell (I think it's entangle) will cause massive slowdown. It goes away but can be a real pain if you have an enemy that spams it. Only happened to me maybe 4 times though.

Please dont kill me for asking this but I havent seen it explicitly stated here...could i use my iphone with that wrap around controller thing to play games on my ipad? Or have they not been that specific?

Don't think so. You can either use a controller that wraps around the iPad or a separate Bluetooth controller.

Any advice for a new player of Baldur's Gate who has also never played a CRPG?

Go slow. Save often. Don't give up. I had never played an old school crpg either outside of Dragon Age.

EDIT: use bows at low levels, give everyone a bow. Your biggest challenge at the start will be taking melee damage and this negates that a little.

Anything notable come out last night? I'd buy Agricola, but I just got Eclipse, so I'm set on board gaming for a while.

Has anyone else played the new "moba" from Zynga, Solstice Arena?

I find myself.... actually liking it a lot. And the pay restrictions aren't even that bad, about the same as LoL.

I know sometimes the awesome guys of Capybara are on this thread.

Please know that when I saw the XboxOne logo at the end of your new game trailer I was sooooo disappointed :p

It's coming to iPad too, right?

On a different news, Logitech is already working with Apple for a iOS external controller.

really hope the wrap around iphone controller case thing also has analog sticks.

Or some 3rd party makes one that does.

Maybe through in an external battery too. Would pay a benjamin for it, no hesitation.

Apple provides an API for two types of controller and one includes two analogues stick. So yes, it's possible and i'm sure we'll see one like that quite fast after iOS 7's release :)

It is one of the 3 game controller types. From WWDC Game Controller session:

100% completion in KRF. The steal 10,000 gold chieve took awhile. Now the long wait for more levels.

What are your favourite heroes and towers?

I've been trying to 3-star and complete all the challenges. What I've found:

Crossbow towers with the multishot ability are really good and are what I go for first. DWAARP with furnace blast is next and then I go for the Crossbow range aura ability. Necro towers with death knight and near the crossbow tower, if possible, to clog up the junctions. Finally, I go for a mech tower with missiles. Depending on the stage, an axethrower tower with a point in both totems helps a lot as well.

The more I play, the more I realize it is unnecessary to upgrade the barracks. I usually just build one or two at the key junctions and leave them.

I used Alric for 3/4 of the game until I bought the dragon. The dragon is really cool for the AOE attacks, and he levels really fast since it's easy for him to avoid damage.

You pretty much nailed what my favorite towers are. After upgrading their tree its easy to make crossbow towers on the cheap, and they do some good damage. Some levels I avoided barracks altogether and just used necro towers instead (along with maxed out reinforcements). Necro, DWAARP with furnace blast and crossbow towers were my go to in later rounds and in challenges that allowed it. I did feel like some of the challenge missions they gave you way too much starting gold.

The KR series has become one of my favorite gaming series.

I nearly never use barracks so far. Same applied to the inital KR as well... basically do the whole thing with reinforcements.

I don't find that they justify their cost; for the benefit they provide; and the use of a valuable space. In the first KR; I'd sometimes use one at a key junction for Barbarians (Dobule Axe; Axe Throwing) and keep them behind my reinforcements.

PS: Anyone else not have the
Mecha achievement
pop? Had a whole stage with only them and it never popped.

The standardized Bluetooth controllers also have to be another step toward giving the Apple TV console capabilities. I love plenty of iOS-first games, but that thing could be amazing for big-screen nostalgia gaming (considering how many old games already get iOS re-releases). And then, when the time is right... Apple announces that they have obtained first-year exclusive rights to the FFVII HD remake.

I always use barracks at choke point, and I upgrade into knights usually at some point too. Don't consider myself a leet player or anything, but it has gotten me just a few stars short of 100% with no IAPs so I guess multiple different strategies work. :)

Avengers Alliance, is now out on iOS, one of those F2P apps full of timers and multiple currencies and the works; ported from facebook, where it was the same way and one of the most popular games on the service (the low rating is mainly due to people griping their facebook accounts with 100s of hours invested don't carry over - it's definitely a 5-star app score game otherwise).

So I think I covered the big minuses, but it's got a surprising amount of depth to it and imo can be enjoyed for a very long time without spending any money at all. The battles reward you for maximizing your attacks/damage dealt and not receiving damage yourself. It's a turn-based battle system with turn indicators so you can plan in advance your tactics. There's like 200 status effects you can inflict in battle to change things up, and each of the fix or six classes are strong/weak vs a different one, so which of the 30+ marvel heroes you bring really changes how the battle plays out. The character unlocks can be earned with in game currency at a very slow rate if you're patient, but aren't really needed. The PvP system is still on its way, and is horribly balanced, but also pretty enjoyable once you get past what it is.

I actually think the timers aren't very intrusive at all if you're just looking to play for 20-30 minutes at a time, and if you're looking for mindless fun, this is worth a look and probably better suited to iOS than a PC imo. Be sure to enable the sidebar in combat so you can see all the status info too, in the later chapters the battles get a bit more difficult with being multiple waves.

I'm still hooked on Scalawags, but I doubt I'll have the focus to ever fully beat it. I'm not big on grinding. I wish there was a mode similar to Dungeon Raid where you basicially play an increasingly difficult "endless" round until your inevitable demise. That way I could enjoy the god tier match 3 goodness without having to keep replaying story mode.
