People keep saying the new one is bad but don’t say why. Could someone provide a bit more info? Just a bit to not spoil for folks
Narratively it is overly pretentious, too self aware, and pats itself on the back.

Visually it has ZERO charm or awe. Even when it is recreating a beat for beat action moment from the earlier films, it feels lazy, sloppy, and tired.

It is so bad it makes me wonder what I ever saw appealing in The Matrix to begin with.

All they needed was a 10 min continuous kung fu/ gun fu sequence to rival Daredevil and they couldnt even manage that. On top of the needlessly convoluted story.

I haven't seen it yet, but I try not to let new entries ruin movies. I never liked Revolutions, but I enjoy the other two movies just fine.

You know, i just played a bit of that matrix unreal 5 demo whatever thing on the xsx and WOW, where was THAT instead of Matrix 4? Funny, self depricating, quite meta, but also packed with a really nice action sequence!

I dunno, I actually found that tech demo to be more woke for brownie points than anything in the new movie. Sassy black girl literally backseating Trinity and it gets so bad that Neo literally bails out of a moving car. Four Agents jumping at this Twitter chick in the movies would have meant the most exciting fight scene would be the Agents wrestling over who gets which dismembered limb from the obliterated corpse, but this chick?

HURRR HURRR SORRY BOYZZZ

Give me eight more sequels to Resurrections before that shit.

I have not seen the latest Matrix but given the Wachowski's career lately I have no faith in it. Last time I saw a movie from them was about some furry hybrid guy from outer space saving some princess who "owns" the Earth but still works as a toilet cleaner.

Probably will see it when its on a streaming service. Maybe.

It's already on a streaming service. All WB movies this year are released day and date in theater and HBO Max.

That fast? Not aware of it since I stop using HBO Max months ago. Guess I'll see it when its on free tv.

Heard the film was very Last Jedi.

Looking at the overarching plot, I think that we could've had a far more compelling story if a programmer or computer scientist had been involved. At least as a consultant or co-writter. The continuation from the original could've been way more abstract and interesting than what eventually came to be. With some action scenes sprinkled here and there of course.

Yeah it most definitely is ruined. When you first watch The Matrix it is an exhilarating experience. I fell asleep 30 mins into this new movie. Told me everything I needed to know. Complete arse.

Alien was ruined by Alien 3.

Star Wars was ruined by The Last Jedi.

I watched that Resident Evil movie recently too. And it just got me thinking who the fuck green lights all this shit?

Thing is, if you read up on the production of star wars, the matrix, and alien, you etc, but they were very often quite troubled projects that had a really hard time convincing anyone they would work. It's only with the benefit of hindsight that it seems obvious they would be cultural touchstones.

So I can give studio execs a bit of leeway when they greenlight what seems to be a POS disaster, I think MOST films start off that way :p

Shambles like SW and TLOU2 killed my capacity to get hyped. so I didn't even care about this new Matrix movie. And it doesn't seem I missed out.

I tried watching this the other day and turned it off when jada pinkett showed up doing the worst old lady voice ive ever heard. Should I even bother to finish it?

Holy shit.
$12 million for Christmas weekend.
For a Matrix movie.
It doesn't get much more BOMBA than that.

Another critical and commercial failure for the Wachowskis. I don't see them getting work at all after this one.
The ironic thing is the film is doing 'ok' internationally, with a $47mil weekend. That does include a few weekdays too in some countries, but cinema's are closed on Christmas day in a lot of countries (unlike the US).
If this could get to around $200mil worldwide, there is a chance we could get another one of these lol. It would depend really how much box office WB think they lost by having the film on HBOMax, and therefor all over the web day and date.

I'll give Matrix 4 a try. Original Matrix was legendary and I enjoyed 2nd and 3rd even if they were just ok. Now the Star Wars and Alien need an Ghostbusters treatment. For me disney trilogy and covenant should be made non canon.

Didn’t like it, it was too meta and wacky in a bad way, fell asleep a bit during the middle.
I was expecting Zuckerberg to make a guest appearance only to be disappointed.

I'm going to hold my answer until we see another sequel / reboot not done by the Wachowskis.

The Matrix needs a completely fresh start from a director / visionary who understands it and treats it like a passion project which Lana clearly lost for it decades ago.

1. Aliens
2. Empire Strikes Back and New Hope
3. Matrix 1

All the other movies are shit..... although I haven't seen the latest Matrix movie. So who knows, maybe it's good.

Bonus: Star Trek Wrath of Khan (old one and new one). Both solid movies. The rest are shit too.

The Matrix was a ruined franchised the day the second one hit theaters.
Not as bad as the last one. The Matrix: Mechwarrior Video Game Edition

Alien is not ruined.
It absolutely is. They’ve completely ruined the entire franchise by making the aliens just a stupid science experiment by an android. Scott seems to have a hard on for this android/AI stuff, the aliens are just a minor part of that now.

Making them man made was the dumbest move they could possibly make. Alien and Aliens are two of my favourite movies of all time, but after the dumpster fire that was covenant and what it did to the lore of the aliens universe, I wish they’d just kill the franchise off. Thankfully covenant seems to have done just that with how awful it was.

The matrix resurrection was a completely pointless movie by itself, like the recent Dune. It did essentially nothing for 2.5 hours. It was basically Lana Wachowski’s transgender experience, unsurprisingly now making the hero of the story a woman.

All I can say about this movie is that it would be much better for the whole world if it didn't exist never. So did the last three episodes of Star Wars, the last two seasons of Game of Thrones, or the last Terminator. It's a pity that Keanu Reeves agreed to participate in this pile of shit...

Yeah the lore is pretty messy. I guess Ridley ignored AVP, because the predators were using xeomorpths when humankind were building the pyramids (for the predators 😆).

However I still dont think the franchise is ruined a great alien movie could still be made.

For me personally, unless they strip Alien Covenant from the canon, the franchise will always be ruined. As long as stupid David and androids are the focus, which they will be while Ridley Scott is attached - he's said so himself - it's better off dead.

Does the origin of the xeomorpths really matter?
The xeomorpths are basically a bigger and more advanced ant colony.
What other origin story would be so much better?
If xeomorpths came to be through natural evolution and they were the dominant species on some planet would that be more interesting.
The xeomorpth are a very interesting and creative enemy design, but you cant really drive a plot foward with enemies with the intelligence of an animal.

Thank You. I never gave a shit were they came from.

Yes, their origin absolutely matters. They don't need an origin story, they can just be - oh I don't know - an alien species? Knowing they're just some weaponized lab grown science experiment completely destroys the creatures for me.

I completely disagree with your last statement too. Alien 1-3 did perfectly fine with enemies with the intelligence of an animal.

The matrix could still work but I would move on from Neo for now. They could just make an origin story of the first group who escaped the matrix if that is a thing. It needs to be dark almost like a horror/ thriller and also an action movie. The new matrix was just so bright and numbingly pleasant whether it be in the matrix or in that new human base.

There was one good movie and two shitty sequels. The series was never good.
A part of me wants to objectively go back and re-watch the trilogy.

Cusp of 20 year old me loved the first one. When I watched the first movie I just watched it. Other than the trailer I knew very little of it. With the next two I carried a lot of online baggage saying how bad they were (especially with the third one). This holds true to a lot of entertainment actually. A viable reason for my enjoyment of the first movie was it simply be new, cool and different. It's not hard to be impressed when a person is 18-ish. I'd have to think, where the next two bad or simply more of the same?

I think of The Lord of The Ring trilogy. The first one stood out simply because it was new and different to me at the time. As time wasting as binging can be, people going into the movies today will have a different experience than I who had years to think between them.

Star Wars is dead?

Anyway, the only thing I remember remotely enjoying from the Wachowskis was Speed Racer. They come up with some neat concepts, though. Wish they would have had someone else direct a main entry.

Didn’t like V for Vendetta? Would have to agree on 4…probably a bad sign they couldn’t even get Hugo Weaving and Lawrence Fishburne to care about the script.

Probably some truth to this with me as well: no one had the internet during the first Star Wars trilogy but it was trendy to bag on the prequels claiming George Lucas ruined your childhood. Now internet chatter is like “no Bring George Lucas back Disneyruined my childhood!” despite only The Rise of Skywalker being an objectively bad film.

I haven't seen the latest yet, but a few posts here reflect perfectly my thoughts. Ideally, after the first movie, they really should have left it alone. It was perfectly formed, beautiful to look at, and had interesting ideas. The 2nd was enjoyable visually, but essentially guff, and the 3rd was a accidental wet fart that may as well have been made by roland 'cgi the shit out of everything' emmerich. I'll watch the new one soon, with the bar set lower than a hookers knickers. 😆

It’s worse, Star Wars and Alien never actually went the way of making a self referential parody that in its pursuit of intelligent deconstruction ends up delivering its punchlines in clown shoes.

It’s over for the Matrix.
