I pretend St. Anger doesn't exist, and it makes for a much better list. Bob Rock was a terrible, terrible producer for them and that album is the pinnacle of suckatude.

4. Kill em All
5. Black Album
6. Death Magnetic

8. Load
9. St Anger

That's my personal list. I do think Puppets was more important for metal overall but I like Justice more, it's heavier and holds up better today than the rest of their stuff. Plus that album and the Black album was when James' voice was at its peak. No one in metal sounded better than he did in those ~6 years or so.

Personally I dig bands that change their sound up. If I wanted to listen to Ride the Lightening, I would listen to Ride the Lightening. I don't need the same album with 8 different album covers and I'm sure the band won't care if you stop listening to their new stuff as new fans will always replace the old ones.

Oh hell yea, Metallica lists. I haven't made one of these since 1995 in some newsgroup.

AJFA
Ride the Lightning
$9.98 Garage Days Re-Revisited E.P. (a.k.a. pretty much most of disc 2 from Garage Inc)
The Black Album
Master of Puppets
Re-Load
Death Magnetic
St. Anger
Kill Em All
Load
Disc 1 of Garage Inc

I personally would add the Black Album and Death Magnetic, but it's hard for me to argue with this list.

the rest is shit
Bingo.

Oh we're ranking now? Fun!

1. MoP
2. KEA
3. RtL

And the rest I generally don't care for, aside from maybe a few tracks here and there. I will say this, and I hope I'm not the only one but I actually quite like the song "Hero of the Day" on Load. I don't know what it is, maybe it came out during a formative time in my life or something.

Black Album/Load/Reload have a number of decent songs. Fuel quickly became an annoyingly overplayed FM radio darling but that song is pretty fucking banging.

My rankings:

1. Ride the Lightning
2. Master of Puppets
3. Kill 'Em All
4. ...And Justice for All
5. Black Album
6. Death Magnetic
.

.
.
7. Load/ReLoad
8. St. Anger

It's definitely not a solid list as it changes depending on my mood. But my list looks similar to this most of the time.

I was listening to Black Album the other day, and my god, the mastering on that album is amazing! Even 20 years later its better than 99% of the stuff that comes out.

Metallica NEEDS to master their next album well.

After looking at this list, I've come to the conclusion that you dont deserve to listen to Metallica.

Metallica, watched them in '94 and pretty much disregard anything after the Black album. Load is quite fun to play sometimes. Anything under Ride the Lightning and Puppets are good.

Also, best Mustaine solos? I've been meaning to get more into Megadeth.

Start listening to Rust in Peace - most awesome Megadeth album ever (IMO).

It is. Tornado of Souls is my personal favorite, but the whole album is great. Probably the last great thing either of the two bands did.

I too thought Death Magnetic was freaking awesome.

I don't consider myself an expert listener on heavy metal, but I get the impression that Metallica is so good because James can actually sing. Some people will say that they are not "hardcore" enough or whatever, But I just hear so many who just screams and who can't really sing well. (goes for Punk too).

I think even an album like St. Anger (I only listened to the singles) while forgetable and not "awesome" it was far from bad or a piece of shit.

I love Ride The Lightning (the song) as well as Damage Inc. but compared to acts like Dark Angel I just find Metallica's music a bit too easy on the ears. Except Kill 'em All. The production on that album actually tears through my ears.

I've always been more of a Megadeth dude, but I must give credit where it's due. I like a lot of the stuff off of the first three albums.

That said, they have completely fallen off of my radar and it's been that way for a very long time.

I'm more of a Megadeth person also. However, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and Justice for All were amazing. The Justice tour was the peak of Metallica in my mind.

When the black album came out, my love started to go away, and the subsequent albums changed my perception of them as a whole.

The rest suck. The Black album is the worst. Not because of content, but because that's when everyone started wearing Metallica t-shirts. You kids weren't there! You don't remember! Never forget!

Is there a way to get AJFA tracks with Bass in them? In Rock Band, you can hear the Bass tracks for Blackened and AJFA. Is there a track list out there with the Bass mixed properly?

Metallica was awesome until Hetfield starting thinking he was Johnny Cash (Black Album).

Wouldnt that have have started more with Load?

And either way, he has one of the best Rock voices in general. Especially live.

My favorite band, hands down. And since we're all about making lists:

1. ...And Justice For All
2. Black
3. Master of Puppets
4. Ride the Lightning
5. Garage Inc
6. Load
7. Death Magnetic
8. Kill Em All
9. Reload
10. St. Anger

-The only album of theirs I really don't like is St. Anger.
-I realize that my ranking of KEA is lower than than most, but I will say that I still REALLY love KEA.
-I don't think I've listened to any album in existence more than I have AJFA.

St. Anger is terrible. I would move Load up a spot or two, I really enjoyed that one.

This track its just insane awesome. Jesus, is there any other instrumental like this by any band?

Dismember had a nearly identical instrumental. Similar riffs and structure. It's almost a carbon copy of Orion really.
Dismember - Nenia

Death had a really cool instrumental.
Death - Cosmic Sea

Coroner had a really epic instrumental too. A solo that rips all the way through.
Coroner - Nosferatu

Testament had plenty of instrumentals. Here's a goofy one.
Testament - Confusion Fusion
For the most part a clean acoustic track
Testament - Musical Death (A Dirge)

I caught Metallica for the first time back in '87 at the Monsters of Rock festival that Van Halen headlined, been a fan ever since. They were just breaking in Newsted. These guys were like fuckin' Vikings back in the day! Sadly, the Black album (aka the last good one) was a long time ago. They're sort of like Robert DeNiro. No matter how many Rocky and Bullwinkle's or Death Magnetic's they do there will always be Taxi Driver and Master of Puppets to remember. Their place in history is secure.

No Leaf Clover was great, but would've been better if they did a studio version. The rest was kinda eh as far as I'm concerned. Most of the time it tended to sound like the orchestra and the band weren't playing the same song.

Yeah, I honestly think that AJFA is the worst mixed record of all time. Why won't they release a version remastered with bass in it? I often wondered if the bass was even there.

I saw MEtallica at Jason Newsteds last show in 2000 in Lexington as a make up show for Summer Sanitarium. (He left the band about a month later) Man, I don't even listen to metal anymore, but I tell you the truth, that was the best show I've ever seen by far. The band played all their hits. They had great energy, and best of all, the people in the crowd were like a family. We were high-fiving, being respectful. It was awesome. I was a young cat then. About 14 years old. I remember this older dude who was about 28ish and I was in the second row behind him. He said "Hey dude, is this your first Metallica show?" and I was like "yeah" and he said "Well, fuck man, the second row is no place to be. Take my spot." And he moved back two rows and I moved to the front. God-damn, that was awesome. I met Good Guy Greg IRL.

In the South, though, it was all about Pantera. As far as super popular metal bands go, Pantera will always be my favorite. The musicianship was undeniable. It was too bad I didn't see them play live until 2000, when they were with Slayer. Phil was a junkie piece of shit and Darrel had lost a step or two, as well. Slayer, however, played INCREDIBLY. Pantera was way more popular at that time, but everyone there agreed that Slayer was easily twice the live band Pantera was at the show. Look for Pantera playing Domination in Russia, and weep bitter tears. Now THAT was a good show!

My favorite Metallica song, BTW, was probably Blackened. Just give me some bass!!!

i have a "re-mastered" version of AJFA where the bass sounds like it was properly done. Sounds night and day compared to original version.

Edit: The mix is called And Justice for Jason..

Oh sweet. I'll try to find it.

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnatnzxxtFE Here it is. Yeah, it sounds way heavier, dude! Some parts (like the fast intricate part at before the verses) the bass is a bit too clunky, but generally, it sounds way better.
