I would be surprised to see it get a second season with these ratings, but hoping it will because of (I'm hoping) good specific demographic appeal and low production cost.

I think she'd still be the main character, it would just be a less literal title (as with The Good Wife). Like you, though, I'd be very glad to see the show come to a natural conclusion.
Sucks about the rating though, but the word of mouth seems to be good in this one. I've seen it periodically being mentioned in my feeds within the last week from other friends I haven't told about it. They seem to have discovered it themselves.
I'll be okay if this show only gets on season though if all the loose ends are all tied up...
Yep, this episode was all about the feels, quite heavy on the drama. I had only one big laugh out loud moment (that baby picture haha). Typically, if this were a soap opera, I would bail once the laughter at the premise stopped. However the actors are really doing a good job making sure it's not too melodramatic (the script helps here by providing lots of good characterization). I also saw the preview for next week
Jane teaching in a Catholic high school
and i like the potential for more jokes. I don't mind a break from the romance/drama a bit and it really does seem like they can stretch out a whole season out of this.
Also: Goddam I want Rafeal's fitness instructor and tailor. How the hell does he fit that torso into those immaculate shirts without them ripping off?
And: GIVE ME SOME GIFS!!! Pertra punch. Jane faces etc
Avclub review: B+. Any other tv critic following the season?
I finally overcame my hatred of the Venezuelan original to give this one a shot...I was immediately charmed by it! Wonderful cast and the writers seem to have a clear vision of where to take the story (I hope)...so far so good, i'll catch up over the next few days.
That voodoo doll scene and that baby photo was the best. Had the voodoo scene as one GIF but split it, the burning part ended up looping quiet excellently.
Not sure where to start/stop on the spotlight scene so I have two, one that starts a couple seconds before and then a couple seconds after the camera goes back to Jane and the other one with just the spotlight coming on, I'll leave that one just linked.
Haha wow, awesome .gifs PHOENIXZERO, thank you! Great ep as always. Really glad to see Jane continue to be an active protagonist who can learn about what's going on around her, unlike many network dramas I've watched that prefer to keep their protags in the dark as all hell breaks loose around them. As Leona said: ;___; so many feels!
Really enjoying this show it's one of the few that I actually watch in priority over my large backlog. Rogelio nails every scene he is in and the campiness + narrator + grandmother keep me laughing.

This. I'm also watching it as close to live as I can vs. the other shows in my backlog. Clearly my favorite new series for this season I've realized.
BTW, I was showing the extended trailer to my friend and noticed the grandmother speaking English in all the trailers but in the actual series she says them in Spanish with English subs. Just an interesting observation that I had forgotten about.

Beyond the lines in English (which makes sense for a trailer, and the foresight to film in both languages by the way!), there are a couple scenes that never actually happen in the series (Michael complaining about being "frustrated" and Rafael's "girlfriend" suddenly appearing after the kiss).
Thank GOD they didn't decide to pander to the lowest common denominator viewer and have Alba speak in English, because the Spanish makes the character 10x more charming and adorable, especially because everyone just speaks in English to her
I'm glad they cut those things - the (amazing) first episode was amazingly packed enough as it was. But wow, that trailer gave away the entire pilot! The advertising for this show has been terrible.

That honestly is something that has felt out of place to me. I like that the character speaks Spanish and find it charming but it's very odd that no one speaks the language back to her. It's clear that Alba understands English I get why they're doing it for logistical reasons but I haven't thought up a convincing reason for why they communicate that way in the show.
I love this show! Watched all five episodes in one evening, just couldn't stop.

I know second generation kids that only speak English, but understand Spanish so they talk to their grandmas in English who do understand it, but prefer to reply in Spanish. It's a thing that does happen I guess.

Yep, it's pretty common actually. Not sure about Spanish (though I wouldn't be surprised), but I'm always amused by how many clients I work with who only speak Hindi to their children, and whose children only speak English back.
Still like the theory I read upthread about Petra's Mom being Sin Rostro. Seems to make a lot of sense. I do have a soft spot for the crazy notion that Rogelio is Sin Rostro, though. It would just be painful and kind of hilarious to see him as a criminal mastermind. I dunno. It seems so unlikely given the portrayal of his character but it would be a fascinating turnaround and I'm sure they'll do it justice. Rafe's Dad is the boring choice, I think, at least based on what we know so far.
Rafe's sister and stepmom not being on the show for the last couple eps has been welcome, BTW. Their plotline was kind of annoying.

Great episode. The Sin Rostro stuff continues to mean nothing to me (and feels out of place) but this show does relationship drama so well and is so funny doing it (and often, heartbreaking). The hour passed by.

I love that as well, since when I was younger, I similarly would speak English to my grandmother and she'd respond in Spanish. I suppose much of my love for Alba's character is because she reminds me of my own grandmother. Even though this is an American remake, I love that they retained the "Latin" flavor. Looking forward to showing it to my family eventually.

Hmm. I'm surprised this show isn't gaining traction. It isn't as relatable as some of the old CW love dramas because of the novella trappings. Besides that it seems to be the smartest show that doesn't put on the air of being smart which is a trend that started with Dawson's Creek.
MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST SHOW OF THE NEW FALL SEASON. ONLY SIX EPISODES IN AND ITS MOVING FAST AS FUCK!!! LOLOL FUCK THAT WEAK ASS MICHAEL! GO HOME YOU CRYBABY BITCH!!!
The CW is one of the few networks that takes critical reception seriously, so there's no way they won't let the writers finish the story they planned.
And on the off-chance that the writers planned to stretch the narrative out if the ratings were good, then at least the ratings will force them to keep things moving as ridiculously, satisfyingly quickly as the first six episodes.
It's not ideal, but it's not terrible - we have the guarantee of a full pickup (though no guarantee of renewal), so at least we'll get a full season's worth of story instead of the nightmarish scenario of having a shitload of unfilmed scripts just laying around, teasing us with their infinite promise.
I honestly thought the first few episodes were overrated but it's been getting better and better. It's truly one of a kind, and as a remake of a telenovela, it's doing great to drop the worst parts of the shows (aka the acting and slow pacing). I think it may be moving too fast in certain aspects, namely Jane and Rafael's relationship.
But it's really funny. Absolutely love all of Jane's family. And Gina Rodriguez is really great, I hope that she gets to become a big star if this show is cancelled after one season (which wouldn't be a surprise).

Absolutely. It's probably their strongest development slate in well, their entire tenure. Pedowitz seems to especially want a "prestige" show for the network and letting acclaimed shows like Jane stick around is viable for the CW's reputation.
